While profound, prolonged hypoglycemia can cause brain death, most episodes of fatal hypoglycemia are the result of other mechanisms, presumably cardiac arrhythmias (3,17).

What will happen if hypoglycemia is not treated?

If hypoglycemia remains untreated, it can lead to any of the severe symptoms mentioned above, such as seizures, unconsciousness, and, eventually, death. This is why it's critical to treat low blood sugar immediately, no matter the cause.

Can you die from severe hypoglycemia?

In addition to causing coma, seizures, and brain damage, severe hypoglycemia can be fatal (21–23, 29), accounting for up to 10% of deaths among young people with Type 1 diabetes (28).

How long does it take for hypoglycemia to damage the brain?

Recurrent hypoglycemia limits brain cell death 1 week following 90 min of severe hypoglycemia.

Can hypoglycemia cause permanent damage?

Both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia can cause brain injury. However, the way these two conditions cause neurological damage does differ. In general, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is much more dangerous. Extremely low blood sugar can do permanent damage and cause a severe acquired brain injury (ABI) in a short time.

Can hyperglycemia lead to death?

If hyperglycemia is left untreated in people with type 1 diabetes, it can develop into ketoacidosis, where ketones, which are toxic acids, build up in the blood. This condition is an emergency situation that can lead to coma or death.

How does hypoglycemia lead to death?

Hypoglycemia commonly causes brain fuel deprivation, resulting in functional brain failure, which can be corrected by raising plasma glucose concentrations. Rarely, profound hypoglycemia causes brain death that is not the result of fuel deprivation per se.

What are the chances of dying from hypoglycemia?

For example, recent reports indicate that 4% (9), 6% (10), 7% (11), and 10% (12) of deaths of patients with type 1 diabetes were caused by hypoglycemia. It is sobering to think that as many as 1 in 25—or even 1 in 10—patients with type 1 diabetes will die of iatrogenic hypoglycemia.

When is hypoglycemia an emergency?

Severe hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia happens when blood sugar levels are too low, usually below 70 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl). Without treatment, such low levels of blood sugar can lead to seizures and become life-threatening. It is a medical emergency.

What are the dangers of hypoglycemia?

If blood glucose drops really low, the person is not able to function because physical and mental changes occur. They can have seizures or become unconscious. Hypoglycemia is a very dangerous situation but a person can take steps to prevent it. If severe hypoglycemia does occur, quick action is needed.

What level of hypoglycemia is severe?

There are three levels of hypoglycemia: level 1, glucose values less than 70 mg/dL; level 2, glucose levels less than 54 mg/dL; and level 3, referred to as severe hypoglycemia, in which glucose levels are so low that mental or physical functioning is impaired and the person requires assistance.

Which of the following are signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia?

• Feeling shaky.
• Being nervous or anxious.
• Sweating, chills and clamminess.
• Irritability or impatience.
• Confusion.
• Fast heartbeat.
• Feeling lightheaded or dizzy.
• Hunger.

Should I go to the ER for hypoglycemia?

But if your blood sugar continues to be below 70 mg/dL or you are getting more sleepy and less alert, call 911 or other emergency services immediately. If possible, have someone stay with you until your blood sugar is above 70 mg/dL or until emergency help arrives.

Can low blood sugar cause sudden death?

Hypoglycemia has been recognized as a potential cause of death, particularly due to cerebral damage, ever since the introduction of insulin therapy. The pathophysiological changes that occur during hypoglycemia may also increase the risk of sudden death in patients with advanced cardiovascular disease.

Can you be hospitalized for hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia in hospitalized patients has been associated with increased mortality, which could be due to the more severe nature of illness in patients who tend to become hypoglycemic or could be related to the hypoglycemia itself.

Has anyone ever died from low blood sugar?

The study included nearly 3,000 patients with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Nearly 32 percent died by the end of the follow-up period. For patients with moderate hypoglycemia, the risk of death was higher among those taking insulin than among those not taking insulin.

Can you go into a coma from hypoglycemia?

If you have diabetes, dangerously high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can lead to a diabetic coma. If you lapse into a diabetic coma, you're alive — but you can't awaken or respond purposefully to sights, sounds or other types of stimulation.

Can hypoglycemia cause stroke?

[1] Its a common occurrence in diabetic patients receiving pharmacologic treatment. Transient hypoglycemia is well known to produce a stroke-like picture with hemiplegia and aphasia. [2,3,4] Hypoglycemia-induced hemiplegia usually resolves immediately with the administration of intravenous glucose.

What happens to the body during hypoglycemia?

Because the brain depends on blood sugar as its primary source of energy, hypoglycemia interferes with the brain's ability to function properly. This can cause dizziness, headache, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating and other neurological symptoms.

What happens to the brain during hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia impairs simple brain functions and is associated with task-specific localized reductions in brain activation. For a task with greater cognitive load, the increased BOLD signal in planning areas is compatible with recruitment of brain regions in an attempt to limit dysfunction.

Is hypoglycemic coma reversible?

In milder cases, hypoglycemic symptoms are quickly reversed by oral or intravenous glucose. In some cases, however, coma may persist despite restitution of normoglycemia, for reasons that are not clear.

At what sugar level is diabetic coma?

A diabetic coma could happen when your blood sugar gets too high -- 600 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or more -- causing you to become very dehydrated. It usually affects people with type 2 diabetes that isn't well-controlled.

At what sugar level should I go to the hospital?

According to the University of Michigan, blood sugar levels of 300 mg/dL or more can be dangerous. They recommend calling a doctor if you have two readings in a row of 300 or more.

Is hypoglycemia a form of diabetes?

Hypoglycemia is a condition that occurs when the sugar levels in your blood are too low. Many people think of hypoglycemia as something that only occurs in people with diabetes. However, it can also occur in people who don't have diabetes.

What should I do if I think I have hypoglycemia?

If you have symptoms of hypoglycemia, do the following: Eat or drink 15 to 20 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates. These are sugary foods without protein or fat that are easily converted to sugar in the body. Try glucose tablets or gel, fruit juice, regular — not diet — soft drinks, honey, and sugary candy.
