COVID-19Common question

A ventilator pumps air—usually with extra oxygen—into patients' airways when they are unable to breathe adequately on their own. If lung function has been severely impaired—due to injury or an illness such as COVID-19—patients may need a ventilator.

How do ventilators help COVID-19 patients?

A ventilator mechanically helps pump oxygen into your body. The air flows through a tube that goes in your mouth and down your windpipe. The ventilator also may breathe out for you, or you may do it on your own. The ventilator can be set to take a certain number of breaths for you per minute.

What is the recovery time for patients with severe COVID-19 that require oxygen?

For the 15% of infected individuals who develop moderate to severe COVID-19 and are admitted to the hospital for a few days and require oxygen, the average recovery time ranges between three to six weeks.

What happens to your lungs if you get a critical case of COVID-19?

In critical COVID-19 -- about 5% of total cases -- the infection can damage the walls and linings of the air sacs in your lungs. As your body tries to fight it, your lungs become more inflamed and fill with fluid. This can make it harder for them to swap oxygen and carbon dioxide.

What kind of respiratory machines can be used for COVID-19?

One treatment option that is showing promise is the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for COVID-19 patients with severe respiratory distress. By supporting the heart and lungs, the ECMO machine stabilizes patients to allow their body more time to fight the virus.

Why some COVID-19 patients need ventilators

What are the most used breathing aid devices for COVID-19?

Breathing aid devices are used to support the patients who have acute respiration problem due to pneumonia associated diseases like COVID-19, asthma, and dry coughing. The most used devices which are utilized for COVID-19 treatment are oxygen therapy device, ventilator, and CPAP device.

Can a patient with COVID-19 symptoms use a nebulizer at home?

Exhalations through nebulizers used by someone with COVID-19 can spray the virus into the air. The virus can be present in the air of that room for up to two hours, according to asthma experts. This could potentially infect others.

What happens to the body during a COVID-19 critical infection?

During a severe or critical bout with COVID-19, the body has many reactions: Lung tissue swells with fluid, making lungs less elastic. The immune system goes into overdrive, sometimes at the expense of other organs. As your body fights one infection, it is more susceptible to additional infections.

Can COVID-19 cause long-term lung damage?

Some patients do have airway disease similar to asthma – called reactive airway disease – induced by the COVID infection itself.” In addition to long-term effects on the lungs caused by the virus, being on a ventilator can cause long-term complications as well.

Which parts of the body are the most affected by COVID-19?

In the case of COVID-19, the virus primarily attacks the lungs. However, it can also cause your body to produce an overactive immune response which can lead to increased inflammation throughout the body. Myocarditis can impair the heart's ability to pump blood and send electrical signals.

What is the recovery time for COVID-19 patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)?

Most people who survive ARDS go on to recover their normal or close to normal lung function within six months to a year. Others may not do as well, particularly if their illness was caused by severe lung damage or their treatment entailed long-term use of a ventilator.

How long do COVID-19 patients stay on a ventilator?

Some people may need to be on a ventilator for a few hours, while others may require one, two, or three weeks. If a person needs to be on a ventilator for a longer period of time, a tracheostomy may be required.

What percentage of COVID-19 cases have severe lung involvement?

About 14% of COVID-19 cases are severe, with an infection that affects both lungs. As the swelling gets worse, your lungs fill with fluid and debris.

You might also have more serious pneumonia. The air sacs fill with mucus, fluid, and other cells that are trying to fight the infection.

Can I get lung diseases as a result of COVID-19?

Bilateral interstitial pneumonia is a serious infection that can inflame and scar your lungs. It's one of many types of interstitial lung diseases, which affect the tissue around the tiny air sacs in your lungs. You can get this type of pneumonia as a result of COVID-19.

Do all patients with COVID-19 get pneumonia?

Most people who get COVID-19 have mild or moderate symptoms like coughing, a fever, and shortness of breath. But some who catch the new coronavirus get severe pneumonia in both lungs. COVID-19 pneumonia is a serious illness that can be deadly.

Can COVID-19 damage organs?

UCLA researchers are the first to create a version of COVID-19 in mice that shows how the disease damages organs other than the lungs. Using their model, the scientists discovered that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can shut down energy production in cells of the heart, kidneys, spleen and other organs.

Can COVID-19 infection cause permanent scarring of the lungs?

The body replaces cells damaged by the virus with scar tissue, which is thick and stiff. This can result in a condition called “pulmonary fibrosis”, which has been seen in people with COVID-19 and is probably more likely to develop if the lungs are severely affected by the infection.

Can COVID-19 have lasting effects?

Some people who had severe illness with COVID-19 experience multiorgan effects or autoimmune conditions over a longer time with symptoms lasting weeks or months after COVID-19 illness. Multiorgan effects can affect most, if not all, body systems, including heart, lung, kidney, skin, and brain functions.

What are some of the lingering side effects of COVID-19?

A full year has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and the mind-boggling aftermath of the virus continues to confuse doctors and scientists. Particularly concerning for doctors and patients alike are lingering side effects, such as memory loss, reduced attention and an inability to think straight.

How does COVID-19 affect the body?

Viruses attack the body by infecting cells directly. In the case of COVID-19, the virus primarily attacks the lungs. However, it can also cause your body to produce an overactive immune response which can lead to increased inflammation throughout the body.

Can COVID-19 symptoms worsen suddenly?

Moderate symptoms can progress into severe symptoms suddenly, especially in people who are older or who have chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer or chronic respiratory problems.

Can COVID-19 damage the heart?

Coronavirus can also damage the heart directly, which can be especially risky if your heart is already weakened by the effects of high blood pressure. The virus may cause inflammation of the heart muscle called myocarditis, which makes it harder for the heart to pump.

How can I treat symptoms of COVID-19 at home?

Your healthcare provider might recommend the following to relieve symptoms and support your body’s natural defenses:

• Taking medications, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to reduce fever
• Drinking water or receiving intravenous fluids to stay hydrated
• Getting plenty of rest to help the body fight the virus

What are some of the medications that I can take to reduce the symptoms of COVID-19?

Acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) can all be used for pain relief from COVID-19 if they are taken in the recommended doses and approved by your doctor.

What can I do at home if I have mild COVID-19 symptoms and do not need hospitalization?

If you have mild COVID-19 symptoms, you will likely need to manage your health at home. Follow these tips:

• If you have a fever, drink plenty of fluids (water is best), get lots of rest, take acetaminophen (Tylenol®).
• If you have a cough, lie on your side or sit up (don’t lie on your back). Add a teaspoon of honey to your hot tea or hot water (don’t give honey to children under one year old). Gargle with salt water. Call your healthcare provider or pharmacist for advice about over-the-counter, comfort care product, like cough suppressants, cough drops/lozenges. Have a friend or family member pick up any needed medicines. You must stay at home.
• If you are anxious about your breathing, try to relax. Take slow deep breaths in through your nose and slowly release through pursed lips (like you’re are slowly blowing out a candle). If you are having trouble breathing, call 911.
