Often referred to simply as a backplane, this special type of printed circuit board is used as a support structure for connecting other PCBs. The backplane connector adds mechanical strength and stability while also acting as a plane for integrating other system components called daughterboards.

What is the purpose of a backplane?

The backplane is a printed circuit board containing connections (slots) for expansion boards and allows for communication between all connected boards. An example of a backplane used with earlier computers was the NLX form factor, which had connections for expansion cards and a motherboard.

How does a backplane work?

A backplane (or "backplane system") is a group of electrical connectors in parallel with each other, so that each pin of each connector is linked to the same relative pin of all the other connectors, forming a computer bus. ... A backplane uses plug-in cards for storage and processing.

What is backplane in router?

A backplane is the circuitry that provides connectivity between the different modules on a switching or routing device. ... For network monitoring and management, backplane capacity (or backplane bandwidth) is a very important concept. Backplane capacity acts as a cap on the maximum throughput of a network device.

What is a backplane software?

A backplane is an electronic circuit board containing circuitry and sockets into which additional electronic devices on other circuit boards or cards can be plugged; in a computer, generally synonymous with or part of the motherboard.

What is BACKPLANE? WHat does BACKPLANE mean? BACKPLANE meaning, definition & explanation

What is a SATA backplane?

A RAID cage is an internal multi-bay backplane module designed to hold hard drives in a removable configuration. SAS / SATA removable hard drive racks facilitate hot-swap operation for RAID setups, or mobility for transferring data or backups. ... The racks include the frame as well as the drive tray.

What is a backplane cloud?

A backplane or backplane system is an electrical connector that joins several electrical circuits together. The backplane connectors are parallel to each other in order to link each pin to its relative pin on each connector, forming a complete computer bus.

What is backplane speed?

Backplane bandwidth is a measure of the bandwidth of the internal architecture of the switch. The term is thrown around pretty loosely to refer to anything internal to the switch that doesn't refer directly to the packet forwarding rate of the forwarding engine. The Backplane speed depends on the type of switch. (

What is backplane IP address?

Using the IP network as a backplane promotes openness, flexibility and scalability. With an IP network backplane, the relative location of the processing entities is of no consequence. The processing entities can be located anywhere in the IP network and are identified by their IP addresses.

What is backplane IP?

Backplane is the discreet circuitry that allows different computer components to communicate within the system's frame. A good example within a network device would be a chassis system. When you insert a card, it connects to the backplane.

What is a passive backplane?

Passive and Active

Although resistors may be used, a "passive" backplane adds no processing in the circuit. An "active" or "intelligent" backplane may have microprocessor or controller-driven circuitry that adds a little or a whole lot of processing. See bus.

What is on the motherboard?

The motherboard accommodates the central processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), expansion slots, heat sink and fan assembly, basic input/output system (BIOS) chip, chipset, and the circuitry that interconnects the motherboard components.

What is a midplane in a server?

The midplane provides power and signal interconnects between back side server components and the front-end server components. The midplane and the SAM are considered a single unit.

What is backplane in LCD?

Explanation: The ac voltage applied between the segment and a common element is called the backplane(bp). In which each segment is driven by an EX-OR gate.

What is backplane in FPGA?

Backplane applications require transceivers that can drive electrical signals at high data rates upwards of 10.3125 Gbps per link on 10" to 40" backplanes. ... These solutions are designed to provide the greatest flexibility and performance at the lowest power in an FPGA transceiver.

What is backplane network nutanix?

Backplane network reconfiguration is a CLI-driven procedure that you perform on any one of the CVMs in the cluster. The change is propagated to the remaining CVMs.

What is backplane capacity?

Backplane capacity is similar to bus speed in a computer. It defines the bandwidth of the module-to-module interconnect in large multi-module switches. Backplane speed is just one component of total speed, it means total backplane throughput of a switch would be the sum of the port speeds.

What is bandwidth in switch?

Switching bandwidth is the aggregate input and output bandwidth of all ports. So a 48 port gigabit switch would have 48Gbp/s and 48Gbp/s out, that leaves us with only 96Gbps and apparently, 80GBps would likely be the stacking port rate.

How is switch bandwidth calculated?

The switching capacity of the switch = Number of ports * Rate of the port *2 (full-duplex). For example, the switching capacity of a 24-port 100M switch is =24*100*2=4.8Gbps.

Why is SAS better than SATA?

SAS is optimal for use in servers and workstations because it has a more versatile array of connectors and is faster at reading and writing data in a continuous computer session. SATA is better for storage purposes because it can write data very quickly, and the hardware is budget-friendly for small businesses.

Can I replace SAS drives with SATA?

The use of SATA hard drives on SAS controllers is made possible by the fact that both share the same infrastructure and have similar features. ... SAS drives cannot be plugged into SATA controllers.

What is SAS controller card?

SAS Controllers have all but replaced SATA controllers on the mid and high-end because they are compatible with both high performance SAS hard drives and high capacity SATA drives. You also are able to use longer cables with SAS as opposed to the limitations of SATA. ...

What is backplane and midplane?

Some backplanes are constructed with slots for connecting to devices on both sides, and are referred to as midplanes. ... Servers commonly have a backplane to attach hot swappable hard drives; backplane pins pass directly into hard drive sockets without cables.

Why is motherboard so important?

A motherboard, also known as the "main board," is the central circuit hub that allows connection between all components and peripherals attached to the computer. It also allows all the components such as CPU, graphics card, hard drive and the memory to receive power from the attached power supply.

What is the main purpose of motherboard?

The motherboard is the backbone that ties the computer's components together at one spot and allows them to talk to each other. Without it, none of the computer pieces, such as the CPU, GPU, or hard drive, could interact.
