Incised fence posts engineered to provide a greater preservative treatment. Using cutting edge technology, the treatment process allows the preservative to permeate the timber to a deeper level, to achieve a longer lifespan. The end result is a fence post that comes with a 15 year warranty and complete peace of mind.

What are incised posts?

These robust and long-lasting fence posts have tiny incisions that go deep into the timber, allowing the pressure treatment preservative to penetrate deep into the post. This process is common in agricultural fencing, and these Incised Posts will bring the technique and benefits to the domestic garden.

Why do fence posts split?

The timber starts to exhibit cracks and splits where it further dries out from it's original point of FSP. It is, by its nature trying to reach an equilibrium with it's surrounding air moisture.

What does incised wood mean?

Incising is a pretreatment pro- cess in which small incisions or slits are punched into the wood. Incising increases preservative retention and penetration during the treating process by increasing the amount of exposed, easily penetrated end-grain and by increasing the side-grain surface area.

Why is timber incised?

The purpose of incising is to force preservative chemicals deeper into the cellular structure of the wood. Species and commodities that are difficult to consistently and uniformly penetrate with preservatives are required to be incised prior to treatment.

WHY DO FENCE POSTS FAIL?

What is an incised beam?

Incising is the process of piercing the surface of wood with small slits, before treatment, to allow more preservative to consistently penetrate beyond the surface of the wood. Incising improves protection and lengthens the service life of treated wood.

How do I stop my posts from splitting?

If your posts are cracking, it's likely because they are brittle and dry. Apply some type of wood stain or sealer containing natural wood oil to bring back a supple quality to the wood to prevent further problems.

Is it normal for 6x6 posts to crack?

The crack in your photo in the center of a 6x6 pressure treated post is common, it's called "checking", and it has no structural significance at all.

Are fence posts treated?

Many fence posts are pressure-treated to make them last longer, but you can take extra steps to prevent them from rotting or slow down the rotting process so the posts last longer.

What is a Mortice fence post?

What is a morticed fence post? A mortice is a is a rectangular cavity in a material that usually forms a joint. In fencing, timber arris rails are fitted through the mortice. Feather-edge boards are then nailed to the arris rail and overlap each other to create a continuous barrier.

How deep should a fence post be?

The depth of the hole should be 1/3-1/2 the post height above ground (i.e., a 6-foot tall fence would require a hole depth of at least 2 feet). Add about 6 inches of QUIKRETE All-Purpose Gravel into the bottom of the hole.

Does capping fence post prevent rot?

When exposed to rainy conditions, the timber posts end grain is the most vulnerable. The tops of the post will absorb all the water rather than the whole post, which leads to mildew, mold and eventually cause your post to rot. ... Moreover, post caps offer protection for your posts from wildlife.

How long can you get a 4x4 post?

You can generally expect your treated 4x4 post to last for 20 years, but they can last longer based on several factors. Whether it be the pressure treatment or weather conditions, let's take a look at how long you can expect a treated 4x4 post to last.

What is incised green timber?

The Incised Green Treated Post is manufactured from a kiln-dried whitewood that has been incised along the full length of the post. These incisions allow the treatment to penetrate deep into the core of the timber structure.

Does checking weaken wood?

Most Timber Frames Are Built From Green (Wet) Wood

Yes, green timber will shrink, check, and sometimes twist as it dries, but timber framers and engineers understand and account for the movement.

Is cracked wood still strong?

Probably not. If anything, checks and cracks actually help improve structural integrity because it releases the tension and pressure built up by shrinking wood. ... Last but not least, it can be stronger and provide better insulation than green wood.

How do I stop my 4x4 from splitting?

It usually is not a structural issue, but you should seal them as best as you can to keep out water. Freezing water is the worst, since once ice gets it it can continue to force the split open further. Sealing PT wood early is the best way to reduce the problem, but it is almost impossible to prevent it.

Is it normal for pressure treated wood to split?

Over time, most treated lumber will shrink slightly across its width as it dries out. ... After being outdoors for six to 12 months, treated lumber will develop cracks, called "checks," along the surface of each board. These hairline cracks are a normal part of the drying process.

Are cracks in wood normal?

As the moisture from solid wood posts and beams dries out and the wood cures, shrinkage produces not only checking (large cracks that are normal and are typically not a concern) but also an actual reduction in beam or posts dimensions.

What do incised mean?

1 : cut in : engraved especially : decorated with incised figures. 2 : having a margin that is deeply and sharply notched an incised leaf.

Is Southern Pine incised?

Typically, Southern Pine isn't incised. Most other commonly used species are. Here is an bit from the wood handbook about incising. "Incising is practiced primarily on Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and western larch ties and timbers for pressure treatment and on cedar and Douglas-fir poles.

What is pressure treated wood?

Pressure-treated lumber is the result of a process that uses high pressure to inject a preservative into the wood. ... The chemical preservative used in the process makes lumber resistant to insects and moisture, and it can even protect the wood in severe weather climates.
