Key Points. Adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell). Leukemia may affect red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Previous chemotherapy and exposure to radiation may increase the risk of developing ALL.

What kind of cancer is acute leukemia?

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. The word "acute" in acute lymphocytic leukemia comes from the fact that the disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones.

What is the survival rate for acute lymphocytic leukemia?

While acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children is more common than other types of cancer, it has high cure rates. Survival rates are lower in adults, but they are improving. The 5-year relative survival rate for ALL is 68.8%. The statistics further break down to 90% in children and 30-40% in adults.

How serious is acute leukemia?

Although AML is a serious disease, it is treatable and often curable with chemotherapy with or without a bone marrow/stem cell transplant (see the Types of Treatment section).

Is acute lymphocytic leukemia curable?

What are the survival rates for acute lymphoblastic leukemia? About 98% of children with ALL go into remission within weeks after starting treatment. About 90% of those children can be cured. Patients are considered cured after 10 years in remission.

Which type of leukemia is most fatal?

Patients with the most lethal form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) – based on genetic profiles of their cancers – typically survive for only four to six months after diagnosis, even with aggressive chemotherapy.

Is Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia terminal?

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is also called acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “Acute” means that the leukemia can progress quickly, and if not treated, would probably be fatal within a few months. "Lymphocytic" means it develops from early (immature) forms of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

What are the two types of acute lymphocytic leukemia?

There are two main types of acute leukaemia, myeloid and lymphoblastic. Lymphoblastic leukaemia can also be called lymphocytic leukaemia. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is divided into different groups (subtypes). Doctors use two different systems to work out which type a person has.

How fast does acute leukemia progress?

Acute leukemias — which are incredibly rare — are the most rapidly progressing cancer we know of. The white cells in the blood grow very quickly, over a matter of days to weeks. Sometimes a patient with acute leukemia has no symptoms or has normal blood work even a few weeks or months before the diagnosis.

Is acute lymphocytic leukemia hereditary?

Leukemia does not usually run in families, so in most cases, it is not hereditary. However, people can inherit genetic abnormalities that increase their risk of developing this form of cancer.

Who is most affected by acute lymphocytic leukemia?

Children younger than 5 have the highest risk of ALL. After a child grows into adulthood, the general risk of ALL rises again after age 50. About 4 out of every 10 people diagnosed with ALL are adults.

Can you live a long life after acute lymphoblastic leukemia?

Survival statistics for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)

They come from the National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN). Generally for people with ALL: around 70 out of 100 people (70%) will survive their leukaemia for 5 years or more after they are diagnosed.

Can acute lymphoblastic leukemia spread?

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia invades your blood and can spread to other organs, such as your liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. But it usually doesn't make tumors like other types of cancer.

Is leukemia the worst cancer?

About 23,000 people die each year from leukemia. It's the sixth-leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women. The chance of living at least five years after diagnosis is called the five-year survival rate. That rate for leukemia is four times higher than it was in the 1960s.

Which is worse acute or chronic leukemia?

Chronic leukemia inhibits the development of blood stem cells, ultimately causing them to function less effectively than healthy mature blood cells. As compared to acute leukemia, chronic leukemia tends to be less severe and progresses more slowly.

What is the symptoms of acute leukemia?

• pale skin.
• feeling tired and breathless.
• repeated infections over a short time.
• unusual and frequent bleeding, such as bleeding gums or nosebleeds.
• high temperature.
• night sweats.
• bone and joint pain.
• easily bruised skin.

Can you survive acute leukemia?

Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL)

The median age at diagnosis is 17, but the median age in people who die from this type of leukemia is 58. Survival rates are pretty even across all ages, and the relative survival rate for all ages is 69.9% .

Does acute lymphoblastic leukemia have stages?

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) has no standard staging system. The phases of ALL are described as untreated, in remission, relapsed (also called recurrent) or refractory.

WHO classification acute lymphocytic leukemia?

World Health Organization classification system

Rarely, acute leukemia may have characteristics of both ALL and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). These rare leukemias are referred to as mixed phenotype acute leukemias (MPAL). B lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma with recurrent cytogenetic abnormalities: with t(9;22)

What are the 4 main types of leukemia?

• Acute myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (AML)
• Chronic myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (CML)
• Acute lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL)
• Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)

What happens if acute lymphoblastic leukemia is left untreated?

These abnormal cells build up in the bone marrow and spill out into the blood. The leukaemia cells can build up in the lymph nodes, liver and spleen and sometimes make them bigger. If it wasn't treated acute leukaemia would cause death within a few weeks or months. But treatments can work well for some people with ALL.

What are the final stages of leukemia?

• Easy bruising and bleeding, including recurring nosebleeds.
• Anemia.
• Persistent fatigue.
• Frequent or severe infections.
• Fever and chills.
• Dramatic weight loss.
• Swollen lymph nodes.
• Enlarged liver or spleen.

Which type of leukemia is most curable?

Treatment outcomes for APL are very good, and it is considered the most curable type of leukemia. Cure rates are as high as 90%.

What is the difference between acute and chronic leukemia?

Chronic leukemia is a slow-growing leukemia. Acute leukemia is a fast-growing leukemia that progresses quickly without treatment.

What is the difference between myelogenous and lymphocytic leukemia?

Lymphocytic leukemia (also known as lymphoid or lymphoblastic leukemia) develops in the white blood cells called lymphocytes in the bone marrow. Myeloid (also known as myelogenous) leukemia may also start in white blood cells other than lymphocytes, as well as red blood cells and platelets.
