Jupiter's rocky moon Io is the most volcanically active world in the solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes, some erupting lava fountains dozens of miles (or kilometers) high.

Why was the moon Io named Io?

It is just slightly larger than Earth's moon. Io is named after a maiden who was loved by Zeus. In the Greek myth, Zeus turned her into a heifer in an attempt to hide her from his jealous wife, Hera. Io was discovered by Galileo Galilei and Simon Marius in 1610 and is one of the four Galilean satellites.

Is Io a Jupiter moon?

Io is one of the four so-called Galilean moons of Jupiter, along with Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. These larger moons, discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, are all visible from Earth with a small telescope.

What is special about Io moon?

Io is the only world other than Earth that is observed to have active volcanoes and is the most geologically and volcanically active object in the solar system. Volcanic plumes can rise 300 km (190 miles) above the surface.

Is Io a gas moon?

Io has no known rings, but it does create a gaseous torus of material along its orbit around Jupiter.

Where is Io moon?

Io orbits Jupiter at a distance of 421,700 km (262,000 mi) from Jupiter's center and 350,000 km (217,000 mi) from its cloudtops. It is the innermost of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter, its orbit lying between those of Thebe and Europa. Including Jupiter's inner satellites, Io is the fifth moon out from Jupiter.

Can humans live on Io?

This means Io is a land of both fire and ice. Io is generally considered a poor candidate for life because of all the radiation Jupiter blasts it with. In addition, no organic molecules have been detected on its surface, and it has only an extremely thin atmosphere devoid of detectable water vapor.

How old is Io?

Age: Io is about 4.5 billion years old, about the same age as Jupiter. Distance from Jupiter: Io is the fifth moon from Jupiter. Its average orbital distance is about 262,000 miles (422,000 km). Io takes 1.77 Earth-days to orbit Jupiter.

Does Io have ice?

Scientists have found water molecules frozen in the surface ices of Jupiter's moon Io. ... The Voyager spacecraft discovered active volcanoes on Io more than a decade ago. Patches of sulfur and sulfur dioxide frosts cover the satellite. The water ice is combined with the more abundant sulfur dioxide ice on Io's surface.

How did Galileo Galilei discover Io?

The first recorded observation of Io was made by Tuscan astronomer Galileo Galilei on January 7, 1610 using a 20x-power, refracting telescope at the University of Padua in the Republic of Venice.

What color is Io?

Most of Io's surface has pastel colors, punctuated by black, brown, green, orange, and red units near the active volcanic centers. A false color version of the mosaic has been created to enhance the contrast of the color variations.

Where is Enceladus?

Enceladus is one of the major inner satellites of Saturn along with Dione, Tethys, and Mimas. It orbits at 238,000 km from Saturn's center and 180,000 km from its cloud tops, between the orbits of Mimas and Tethys.

How long is a day on Io?

The atmosphere is collapsed and trapped as surface ice for about two hours each day on Io (note: A day on Io is equal to 1.7 Earth days, because that's how long it takes the body to rotate on its axis in relation to the sun.

Does Io have a magnetic field?

Unlike Earth, whose spinning iron core generates a planet-wide magnetic field, Io has no magnetic field of its own. Instead, it is shrouded beneath Jupiter's massive magnetosphere.

Does Titan Moon have water?

It is the sole other place in the solar system known to have an earthlike cycle of liquids raining from clouds, flowing across its surface, filling lakes and seas, and evaporating back into the sky (akin to Earth's water cycle). Titan is also thought to have a subsurface ocean of water.

Are Io volcanoes active?

Io has hundreds of volcanoes, many of which are active. It is one of the most volcanically active bodies in the Solar System. Io is heated up by the strong gravitational pulls of Jupiter on one side and the large moons Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto on the other.

How big is Io vs Earth?

Io is 3642.6 km, or 0.28 Earths, wide. It only has a mass of about 1.4% of the mass of Earth. It is a similar size to our Moon (but a lot more exciting!).

Why is Io so hot?

So, why is Io so darn hot? The likeliest cause is tidal forces - the pulling and tugging of the moon by the gravity of Jupiter. Io orbits at only 421,000 km from Jupiter, making a full orbit in ~1.76 days. ... This distortion causes heat through friction, thus causing Io to stay hot (and partially molten).

Who discovered volcanoes on Io?

Its volcanic activity was discovered in 1979 by Voyager 1 imaging scientist Linda Morabito. Observations of Io by passing spacecraft (the Voyagers, Galileo, Cassini, and New Horizons) and Earth-based astronomers have revealed more than 150 active volcanoes.

Can you see Io from Earth?

But any time Jupiter is visible in your sky you can view Jupiter's four major moons. ... Io zips around Jupiter in 1.8 days, whereas our moon circles Earth every 28 days. The conspicuous black spot on Jupiter is Io's shadow and is about the size of the moon itself (2,262 miles or 3,640 km across).

Why does Jupiter have 67 moons?

Not only is Jupiter the largest planet in the solar system, it is also the most massive at more than 300 times the mass of Earth. Its size plays a role in the number of moons orbiting Jupiter because there is a large area of gravitational stability around it to support many moons.

Can we live on Europa?

Europa's surface is blasted by radiation from Jupiter. That's a bad thing for life on the surface – it couldn't survive. But the radiation may create fuel for life in an ocean below the surface. The radiation splits apart water molecules (H2O, made of oxygen and hydrogen) in Europa's extremely tenuous atmosphere.

Is there oxygen on Io?

Only slightly larger than our own planet's moon, Io is the most volcanically active place in the solar system. Its thin atmosphere is made up largely of sulfur oxides. ... Some of the particles escape from Io's gravity and form clouds of neutral sulfur and oxygen.
