The 2029 pass of asteroid Apophis.

Lance Benner of NASA/JPL commented: This will be the closest approach by something this large currently known. (In 2029) Apophis will be visible to the unaided eye for several hours, and Earth tides will probably change its spin state.

What damage would Apophis do if it hit the Earth?

What would happen if Apophis hit Earth? Apophis would cause widespread destruction up to several hundred of kilometers from its impact site. The energy released would be equal more than 1,000 megatons of TNT, or tens to hundreds of nuclear weapons.

Can Halley's comet hit Earth?

The combination of its size and speed means that if it hits Earth, it could create a massive crater that's 55 miles wide and 20 miles deep. The initial impact from Halley's Comet would generate a magnitude 10 earthquake, which is stronger than anything that has been recorded on Earth.

Which country will Apophis hit?

That is about one-tenth of the distance between the Earth and the Moon. During that 2029 close approach, Apophis will be visible to observers on the ground in the Eastern Hemisphere of Earth, which includes Asia, Africa and parts of Europe.

What would happen if Ceres hit Earth?

Due to its massive size, it can easily cause a global extinction-level event if it hits Earth. Ceres is known as the largest asteroid ever known. It is also classified as a dwarf planet. ... In addition, since it is nowhere near Earth, the planet is still relatively safe even if Ceres' trajectory slightly changes.

How big of an asteroid would it take to destroy the earth?

Ultimately, scientists estimate that an asteroid would have to be about 96 km (60 miles) wide to completely and utterly wipe out life on our planet.

How big is the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs?

Can we stop an asteroid?

No attempts are made to stop the asteroid; however, people desperately search for bunkers to hide in before the comet strikes.

Can Ceres sustain life?

Potential for Life

Ceres has something a lot of other planets don't: water. Here on Earth, water is essential for life, so it's possible that with this ingredient and a few other conditions met, life possibly could exist there. If anything does live on Ceres, it's likely to be very small microbes similar to bacteria.

What if the moon crashed into Earth?

If the explosion doesn't alter the Earth's rotation, the lack of moon would cause the Earth to rotate at a constant speed. This means that every day would be 24 hours long for the rest of the Earth's existence. The Earth's tides would also change because the gravity the moon exerts on the oceans would no longer exist.

Will there be an asteroid in 2022?

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is targeted to launch as soon as November 24 (or as late as February 2022) and will take a year to reach its target: Dimorphos, a stadium-size asteroid that is orbiting a much larger asteroid called Didymos.
