Mammography is specialized medical imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to see inside the breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, aids in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women. An x-ray exam helps doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Why are x-rays used for mammograms?

Screening mammogram.

What is the procedure of mammography?

The woman is asked to stand in front of the mammography X-ray machine. The technician places one of the breasts on a platform. The technician then lowers or raises the platform according to the height of the woman. The arms, head and torso are placed in a position, so that no hindrance is created.

What kVp and mAs is used in mammography?

What are 2 types of examinations in mammography?

There are two main types of mammography: film-screen mammography and digital mammography, also called full-field digital mammography or FFDM.

What is the mAs range for mammography?

Screen-film mammography

Mammography also uses low x-ray tube voltages, typically 25 kV or so, x-ray tube currents of 100 mA, and exposure times of 1 second or more depending on the thickness of the compressed breast.

Is mammography test painful?

Discomfort during a mammogram procedure varies from patient to patient. Some experience discomfort due to the compression that is applied to the breast. Most women, however, tolerate the exam quite well.

What is mammography device?

A mammography unit is a box with a tube that produces x-rays. The unit is used exclusively for breast x-ray exams and features special accessories to limit x-ray exposure to only the breast.

What is X-ray mammography?

A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast. Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer. Regular mammograms are the best tests doctors have to find breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt.

What is mammography film?

Film Mammography

Conventional mammography uses X-ray radiation to produce an image of the breast. Conventional mammograms are read and stored on film, which may result in false positives or an inaccurate diagnosis. A mammogram can be used to screen healthy women with no signs of breast cancer.

Does ultrasound use x-rays?

Ultrasound imaging (sonography) uses high frequency sound waves, to create a live video feed image of the inside of the body. ... Unlike X-ray imaging, there is no radiation exposure associated with ultrasound imaging. During an ultrasound exam, a probe called a transducer is placed directly on the skin or inside the body.

How quickly do radiologists read mammograms?

We read screening mammograms within 24 hours of your appointment. We send a letter to your home and to your doctor as soon as possible, always within three days of your appointment.

What is the side effect of mammogram?

The main risks and other adverse consequences from screening mammography include discomfort from breast compression, patient recall for additional imaging, and false positive biopsies.

What is a disadvantage of mammography?

When the kV is reduced in a specific examination, the mAs (in the units of mAs) must be increased to produce the necessary receptor exposure.

What anode is used for mammography?

Anode: Most mammography equipment uses molybdenum anodes.

What is the kVp range for mammography?

[7] Even though the mammography unit operates in the low tube voltage range typically about 25–35 kVp when compared to other radiography units, a little variation in its operating parameters can lead to the delivery of higher doses which can be detrimental since the breast is a radiosensitive organ.
