Complementary base pairing is the phenomenon where in DNA guanine always hydrogen bonds to cytosine and adenine always binds to thymine. The bond between guanine and cytosine shares three hydrogen bonds compared to the A-T bond which always shares two hydrogen bonds.

What is the complementary base pairing of DNA?

The four nitrogenous bases of DNA are thymine, adenine, guanine, and cytosine. Guanine and cytosine are bonded together by three hydrogen bonds; whereas, adenine and thymine are bonded together by two hydrogen bonds. This is known as complementary base pairing.

What does C pair with in RNA?

In DNA/RNA base pairing, adenine (A) pairs with uracil (U), and cytosine (C) pairs with guanine (G).

How is complementary base pairing different in DNA and RNA?

When this base-pairing happens, RNA uses uracil (yellow) instead of thymine to pair with adenine (green) in the DNA template below. ... A second major difference between the two substances is that RNA is made in a single-stranded, nonhelical form. (Remember, DNA is almost always in a double-stranded helical form.)

How do complementary base pairs help to form the structure of DNA?

This complementary base-pairing enables the base pairs to be packed in the energetically most favorable arrangement in the interior of the double helix. In this arrangement, each base pair is of similar width, thus holding the sugar-phosphate backbones an equal distance apart along the DNA molecule.

DNA: Complementary Base Pairing

Why does complementary base pairing occur?

The nucleotides in a base pair are complementary which means their shape allows them to bond together with hydrogen bonds. The A-T pair forms two hydrogen bonds. ... The hydrogen bonding between complementary bases holds the two strands of DNA together.

What is between guanine and cytosine?

Cytosine and guanine pairing can be found in both DNA and DNA-RNA hybrid formed during replication and transcription. The two nitrogenous bases are held together by three hydrogen bonds. ... The second hydrogen bond is formed between N-3 of cytosine and Hydrogen atom attached to N-1 of guanine.

Why do purines and pyrimidines pair?

Purine always pairs with pyrimidines due to its structural properties. The structure of purines allows them to make hydrogen bonds with pyrimidines. Adenine bonds with thymine because both have two binding sites, so they make double hydrogen bonds.

Which scientist discovered the base pair rule?

Erwin Chargaff found that in DNA, the ratios of adenine (A) to thymine (T) and guanine (G) to cytosine (C) are equal.

How does complementary base pairing make possible the replication of DNA?

How does complementary base pairing make possible the replication of DNA? When the two strands of the double helix separate, each serves as a "mold" upon which nucleotides can be arranged by specific base pairing into new complementary strands. What is the function of DNA polymerase in DNA replication?

How complementary base pairing is used in replication?

Replication relies on complementary base pairing, that is the principle explained by Chargaff's rules: adenine (A) always bonds with thymine (T) and cytosine (C) always bonds with guanine (G).

Why is complementary base pairing important for DNA replication?

Hint: Complementary base pairing is very important in DNA molecule because it allows the base pairs to be arranged in the more energetically favourable way. it is essential in forming the double-helical structure of DNA. It is also important in replication of DNA as it allows semiconservative replication.

Why is uracil used instead of thymine?

Uracil is energetically less expensive to produce than thymine, which may account for its use in RNA. In DNA, however, uracil is readily produced by chemical degradation of cytosine, so having thymine as the normal base makes detection and repair of such incipient mutations more efficient.

What role does complementary base pairing play in the functions of nucleic acids?

Function. Complementary base pairing is important in DNA as it allows the base pairs to be arranged in the most energetically favourable way; it is essential in forming the helical structure of DNA. It is also important in replication as it allows semiconservative replication.

Why are two strands of DNA called complementary?

What is meant when we say that DNA strands are Complementary? Because each DNA strand can be used to make the other Strand, the strands are said to be complementary. ... The DNA molecules separate into two strands. Then, 2 new complementary strands are produced following the rules of Base Pairing.

How is complementary base pairing involved in translation?

8 Translation depends on complementary base pairing between codons on mRNA and anticodons on tRNA. Every set of three nucleotides on the mRNA is called a codon and each codon is complementary to an anticodon on the tRNA strand.

Why is complementary base pairing important in transcription and translation?

Complementary base pairing is very important in the conservation of the base sequence of DNA. This is because adenine always pairs up with thymine and guanine always pairs up with cytosine. ... Therefore, complementary base pairing has a big role in the conservation of the base sequence of DNA.

How does the base pairing rule help to ensure two identical molecules of DNA are formed?

The base pairing rule is DNA cytosine pairs with guanine and adenine pairs with thymine always, well Chargaff said adenine is approximately the same amount as thymine and same with cytosine and guanine. ... The nitrogen containing bases provide the genetic, unique instructions for each individual.

How did scientists discover the complementary base pairs?

Watson and Crick knew that DNA contained four bases, and that they bonded with each other in some way to create the double helix shape. ... The researchers realized that when adenine and thymine bonded with each other, they formed a ladder rung the same exact length as a rung made of a cytosine-guanine pair.

What did Rosalind Franklin discover?

Rosalind Franklin made a crucial contribution to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, but some would say she got a raw deal. Biographer Brenda Maddox called her the "Dark Lady of DNA," based on a once disparaging reference to Franklin by one of her coworkers.

What did Maurice Wilkins discover?

Maurice Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize with Francis Crick and James Watson in 1962 for their joint discovery of the structure of DNA. Naturally reticent, Wilkins didn't initially stand forward to give his own account of the DNA story so few knew of his direct involvement in the project.

What does uracil pair with?

During the synthesis of an RNA strand from a DNA template (transcription), uracil pairs only with adenine, and guanine pairs only with cytosine.

Is cytosine a pyrimidine?

1.5A). Because of their structural similarity, we usually refer the nine-member double rings adenine and guanine as purines, and six-member single-ring thymine, uracil, and cytosine are pyrimidines.
