Both caffeine and dopamine were found to instantly increase the heart rate of Daphnia in a dose-dependent manner. Interestingly, caffeine synergized with dopamine to increase Daphnia's heart rate.

What affects the heart rate of Daphnia?

We determined the effects of three concentrations of ethanol, nicotine, and caffeine and of a control solution on heart rate in Daphnia. Ethanol at 5%% and 10%% (v//v) reduced mean heart rate to ∼∼50%% and ∼∼20%% of its initial value, respectively.

How does caffeine affect the heart rate of an organism?

Caffeine can facilitate the release of natural hormones that act on the heart to release norepinephrine, which can produce a stimulated effect similar to that of adrenaline. At higher levels, caffeine can increase the amount of calcium inside the cells in the heart.

Does nicotine increase Daphnia heart rate?

The 25% nicotine solution caused the heart rate to decrease at a steady pace for one minute and then drastically decrease. Multiple trials found that nicotine causes a decrease in heart rate for Daphnia magna, with higher concentrations of nicotine having a stronger effect.

Why does nicotine decrease heart rate in Daphnia?

Due to these effects, we believe the presence of nicotine and caffeine in water containing Daphnia Magna will result in an increased heart rate of the Daphnia Magna, while ethanol will do the opposite and decrease the heart rate of the Daphnia Magna because caffeine and nicotine will activate neurotransmitters that ...

Investigating how caffeine effects the heart rate of daphnia

How does alcohol affect Daphnia heart rate?

Alcoholic beverages have decreasing effect on the heart rates of Daphnia. As the concentration of alcoholic beverages increases, the heart rate of Daphnia decreases.

How does temperature affect heart rate of Daphnia?

As body temperature increases, the rate of chemical reactions and physiological activities within the organism increase. The rate of cellular respiration increases, requiring more oxygen and producing more carbon dioxide. This requires an increased flow of blood, which is pumped by the heart.

How does nicotine affect pulse rate?

Nicotine increases heart rate, myocardial contractility, and blood pressure.

Why does ethanol increase heart rate?

In nonstressed rats, ethanol sedated the animals but increased heart rate significantly. This ethanol induced tachycardia seemed the result of a direct stimulation of the sympathetic nerves to the heart. Blood pressure was not significantly affected by ethanol in these nonstressed rats.

How does caffeine increase Daphnia heart rate?

We hypothesized that introducing ethanol will decrease the heart rate because this is a depressant which will lower their adrenaline concentration. Alternatively, introducing caffeine will increase the heart rate because it is a stimulant which changes the levels of the neurotransmitter Epinephrine (adrenaline).

What drugs affects Daphnia heart rate?

Aspirin, acetaminophen, and diphenhydramine slowed the heart rate of the daphnia by 29%, 12%, and 6% respectively. Furthermore, daphnia exposed to aspirin and acetaminophen were associated with arrhythmias, or irregular heart rhythms. All over-the-counter medications tested affected the daphnia's heart rate.

Why does Daphnia heart rate decrease with ethanol?

Throughout five trials, we tested these organisms and 5% ethanol combined with aquarium water, we found that ethanol alcohol caused the heart rate of the daphnia to decrease, in this case, due to a decrease in action potentials in the organism.

Does CBD water increase Daphnia heart rate?

CBD, the misleading stimulant: No effect of Daphnia magna heart rate.

How does sugar affect Daphnia heart rate?

The results of the experiment showed that high concentrations of sucrose, salt, and caffeine drastically increased the Daphnia's heart rate. As the concentrations were diluted, the heart rate of the Daphnia decreased, reaching closer to the original heart rate.

How does adrenaline affect Daphnia?

The neurogenic heart of most arthropods is accelerated by adrenaline, an effect obtained on the heart of Daphnia with high concentrations only; low concentrations caused slowing. This is certainly not the action of adrenaline on the vertebrate heart.

Does CBD water increase or decrease heart rate?

But base on these recent studies, the answer to the question-“does CBD lower heart rate” is yes, while the answer to the question-“does CBD increase heart rate” is no! CBD could potentially be beneficial in managing heart rates and blood pressure, especially when a person is under stress.

Where are Daphnia magna found?

Daphnia magna is a small planktonic crustacean (adult length 1.5–5.0 mm) that belongs to the subclass Phyllopoda. It inhabits a variety of freshwater environments, ranging from acidic swamps to rivers made of snow runoff, and is broadly distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and South Africa.

Does drinking alcohol raise heart rate?

The cardiovascular system is affected by alcohol. At the time of drinking, alcohol can cause a temporary increase in heart rate and blood pressure. In the long-term, drinking above the guidelines can lead to on-going increased heart rate, high blood pressure, weakened heart muscle and irregular heartbeat.

Does caffeine raise heart rate?

Answer: Caffeine has multiple effects on the central nervous system, as well as the heart. Typically most people will experience an increase in heart rate, the degree of which differs among individuals.

Why is my resting heart rate so high?

This may be because an increased resting heart rate may be a warning sign of a cardiovascular change, like higher blood pressure or early heart disease. Other reasons a resting heart rate may trend upward include a poor reaction to medication, elevated thyroid hormone levels, anemia, or an underlying infection.

How can I quickly lower my heart rate?

To relax your heart, try the Valsalva maneuver: “Quickly bear down as if you are having a bowel movement,” Elefteriades says. “Close your mouth and nose and raise the pressure in your chest, like you're stifling a sneeze.” Breathe in for 5-8 seconds, hold that breath for 3-5 seconds, then exhale slowly.

How does cold water affect Daphnia heart rate?

If one is submerged in extremely cold water, like we did to our daphnia, it will cause the core body temperature and heart rate to drop, and this can lead to death.

How salt concentration will affect heart rate in Daphnia?

As salt levels increase, the amount of dissolved oxygen decreases. This means that Daphnia need to breathe more to get enough oxygen, and this means an increase in heart rate (Tan, 2015).

Does age affect Daphnia heart rate?

magna Bham 2, both genders show a significant reduction (as percentage of lifespan: p = 9.6 × 10⁻⁴¹, as age in days: p = 2.7 × 10⁻⁷⁴) in heart rate as they age. In females, heart rate decreases by 1.6 fold in 100 days old Daphnia (100% of lifespan) compared to 10 days old Daphnia (10% of lifespan).
