As with any electrical situation where overheating is possible, a bad ballast can pose a fire danger. The overheated ballast could cause the plastic housing on the light itself to melt and, in the right conditions, flame up.

Can a ballast start a fire?

Overheated fluorescent lights can cause fires! Overheating of the ballast could result in the following: Ignition of nearby combustible materials. Explosion of the ballast due to the generation of gases inside.

What causes a ballast to burn out?

Causes of Ballast Failure

Premature ballast failure is often caused by the surrounding environment. ... When it's too hot or too cold, the ballast can burn or fail to start your lamps at all. Heat combined with prolonged condensation inside an electronic ballast can cause corrosion.

What are the signs of a bad ballast?

• Buzzing. If you hear a strange sound coming from your bulbs or light fixture, like a buzzing or humming noise, that's often a sign your ballast is going. ...
• Dimming or flickering. ...
• No lights at all. ...
• Changing colors. ...
• Swollen casing. ...
• Burn marks. ...
• Water damage. ...
• Leaking oil.

Can a magnetic ballast cause a fire?

Because a failing ballast can get extremely hot, it can become a fire hazard. All modern magnetic ballast designs have an internal temperature sensor that shuts the ballast off when it gets too hot.

Is a bad ballast a fire hazard?

Dangers. As with any electrical situation where overheating is possible, a bad ballast can pose a fire danger. The overheated ballast could cause the plastic housing on the light itself to melt and, in the right conditions, flame up.

Does a bad ballast burn out bulbs?

The ballast itself can go bad, which causes lights to flicker or even appear to be burnt out, when in fact they aren't. They require maintenance and energy to power, on top of the power used to light the fluorescent bulb. They are a large part of the equation when using fluorescent lamps.

How long do ballasts last?

According to the Certified Ballast Manufacturers Association, the average magnetic ballast lasts about 75,000 hours, or 12 to 15 years with normal use.

Why does my ballast buzz?

A loose magnetic ballast can be the cause of ballast hum. Check that ballast mounting screws are tight. If the hum is louder than usual the ballast may need to be replaced as ballasts can wear out over time. If you do choose to replace a magnetic ballast, consider replacing with an electronic one.

Why do my fluorescent lights keep burning out?

There are many possible reasons why a light bulb burns out quickly: The power supply voltage may be too high. Bulbs may be loose or connected improperly. Excessive vibrations may be causing the filament to break.

How much does it cost to replace a ballast?

The average cost of ballast replacement is $150 for materials and labor. Materials cost an average of $27.50, and labor costs at least $100 to install a ballast replacement. Homeowners often spend $35 per ballast for programmed-start ballast installation and labor.

Can a bad ballast cause a breaker to trip?

If the primary winding in the ballast goes bad they almost always trip the breaker, unless there is a fuse installed just ahead of the ballast. After checking all of the wiring, as you have been directed to do, the last chip is a bad ballast.

Why is my ballast so hot?

When a bulb of the wrong size or voltage is used in the fixture, the ballast often overheats, causing the light to shut off. The bulbs and the fixture must also match in frequency, or the ballast becomes overworked and overheated.

Can incandescent bulbs cause fire?

Incandescent light bulbs can cause dangerous fires if they are not used correctly. ... Light bulbs in enclosed fixtures are also at a high risk for fire because heat is not able to dissipate as well. Bulbs inside a glass scone or globe can be more prone to fire than other bulbs.

Do LED ballasts get hot?

Contrary to some marketing claims, LED bulbs do indeed generate heat as does anything that consumes electricity. ... Thus while LEDs will generate heat, it will be a fraction of that compared to a traditional technology bulb.

Can you hear fluorescent lights?

Fluorescent lights

You might not be able to hear them, but some people can. They make a faint buzzing noise on the edge of hearing, just loud enough to interfere with concentration and make brains feel itchy.

How do you tell when a fluorescent bulb is burned out?

1. Check the ends of the tube. If they appear darkened this indicates the bulb is burned out.
2. Rotate the tube in the fixture if the bulb is not darkened on either end.
3. Remove the bulb from the fixture if the bulb is still not illuminating.

Why do fluorescent lights not turn on sometimes?

The fluorescent tube won't turn on

No electrical power due to a tripped breaker or blown fuse. A dead or dying ballast. A dead starter. A dead bulb.

How often do ballasts need to be replaced?

A typical ballast will generally last about 20 years, but cold environments and bad bulbs can decrease this lifespan significantly. You can get a new ballast at a hardware store or home center and install it in about 10 minutes.

Do I need an electrician to replace a ballast?

Yes. As a matter of fact, you do need a lock out tag out device in place for changing a ballast. ... 'An electrician is replacing the ballast on a fluorescent light.

Can a fluorescent light work without a ballast?

In a fluorescent lighting system, the ballast regulates the current to the lamps and provides sufficient voltage to start the lamps. Without a ballast to limit its current, a fluorescent lamp connected directly to a high voltage power source would rapidly and uncontrollably increase its current draw.

Why is my fluorescent light orange?

Bulb Is Out or Very Dim and Ends Glow Dim Orange: Bulb is dead and a rapid start or trigger start ballast is making the filaments hot enough to visibly glow. ... This blinking is hard on the starter, and the ballast can get stressed if the starter gets stuck in a starting attempt.

Do all fluorescent lights have a ballast?

All fluorescent bulbs require a ballast. All compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs require a ballast, which is often integrated. All HID bulbs require a ballast, which is sometimes integrated. No LED bulbs require a ballast, although some are engineered to work with an existing ballast.
