Would contribute to acid precipitation?
Emily Dawson Causes of acid rain The biggest sources are coal-burning power plants, factories, and automobiles. When humans burn fossil fuels, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are released into the atmosphere.
What contributes to acid precipitation?
Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are released into the air. ... In addition, the exhaust from cars, trucks, and buses releases nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide into the air. These pollutants cause acid rain.
What does not contribute to acid precipitation?
Carbon dioxide reacts with water to form carbonic acid thus contributing to acid rain. So, from all these gases only carbon monoxide does not react with water to form an acid. Thus, not contributing to the acid rain, So, the correct answer is “Option C”.
What natural processes contribute to acid rain?
Natural Sources
The major natural causal agent for acid rain is volcanic emissions. Volcanoes emit acid-producing gases to create higher than normal amounts of acid rain or any other form of precipitation such as fog and snow to an extent of affecting vegetation cover and health of residents within the surrounding.
Which of the following gases is a major contributor of acid rain?
Which of the following gases are main contributors to acid rain? Explanation: Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide have a high tendency to mix with water to form sulphurous/sulphuric acid and nitric acid. 4.

42 related questions foundWhat is the effect of acid rain?
The ecological effects of acid rain are most clearly seen in aquatic environments, such as streams, lakes, and marshes where it can be harmful to fish and other wildlife. As it flows through the soil, acidic rain water can leach aluminum from soil clay particles and then flow into streams and lakes.
Is an important precursor to acid rain?
most important as an air pollutant is nitrogen dioxide, which is a visible yellow brown to reddish brown gas. it's a precursor of acid rain and produced through the burning of fossil fuels.
How can acid rain be mitigated?
A great way to reduce acid rain is to produce energy without using fossil fuels. Instead, people can use renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. Renewable energy sources help reduce acid rain because they produce much less pollution.
What are 3 ways to reduce acid rain?
Instead, we can use renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power. Renewable energy sources help reduce acid rain because they create much less pollution. There are also other sources of electricity, such as nuclear power, hydropower, and geothermal energy. Of these, nuclear and hydropower are used most widely.
How can you make acid rain?
Pour 1/4 cup of vinegar or lemon juice into the jar then fill the rest of the jar with tap water. Label one plant “a little acid.” Make two labels that say “a lot of acid.” Put a label on the second jar. Pour 1 cup of vinegar or lemon juice into the second jar then fill the rest of the jar with tap water.
What are 3 effects of acid rain?
Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters, and soils, killing insect and aquatic life-forms, causing paint to peel, corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, and weathering of stone buildings and statues as well as having impacts on human health.
What pH value causes acid rain?
Normal, clean rain has a pH value of between 5.0 and 5.5, which is slightly acidic. However, when rain combines with sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides—produced from power plants and automobiles—the rain becomes much more acidic. Typical acid rain has a pH value of 4.0.
What two groups of compounds are largely responsible for causing acid precipitation?
a. Fossil fuel emissions add sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen in the atmosphere. These compounds when dissolved in water (atmospheric moisture) contribute to acid precipitation.
How does acid rain affect the atmosphere?
Effects of acid rain
Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are not primary greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, one of the main effects of climate change; in fact, sulfur dioxide has a cooling effect on the atmosphere. ... Acid rain and fog also damage forests, especially those at higher elevations.
How does acid rain affect buildings?
Deteriorating Buildings
Acid rain damages buildings and structures because it dissolves the stone or corrodes the metal that is exposed to the weather. ... Some of these materials contain calcium carbonate or calcium-based compounds, which can be dissolved by acid rain.
How does the burning of coal contribute to acid deposition?
Coal contains many impurities and sulfur is one of them. When coal is burned the sulfur combines with oxygen and the sulfur oxides are released to the atmosphere. ... This reacts with water molecules in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid, a strong mineral acid. This makes rain acidic.
What are 5 things that can be done to reduce acid rain?
Conserve Energy- Turn off lights, computers, televisions, video games, and other electrical equipment when you're not using them.
- Encourage your parents to buy equipment that uses less electricity, including lights, air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators, and washing machines. ...
- Try to limit the use of air conditioning.
What is the best solution to the problem of increasing acid deposition?
The best solution to the problem of increasing acid deposition is a combination of approaches. Technical fixes, such as clean coal technology and catalytic converters on cars might help reduce some of the anthropogenic emissions.
Why should we care about acid rain?
Air pollution like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can cause respiratory diseases, or can make these diseases worse. ... The pollution that causes acid rain can also create tiny particles. When these particles get into people's lungs, they can cause health problems, or can make existing health problems worse.
Why is acid rain less of a problem now?
The acid rain problem in Europe and North America has largely abated because of stronger SO2 and NOx emission controls, such as the U.S. Clean Air Act of 1970, the Canada–United States Air Quality Agreement in 1991, and similar measures in Europe.
What is acid rain and how is it formed discuss the major impacts of acid rain and the measures to control it?
Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction that begins when compounds such as sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen are released into the air. These substances can rise very high up into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants called acid rain.
What place in the world receives the most acid rain?
Acid rain is responsible for severe environmental destruction across the world and occurs most commonly in the North Eastern United States, Eastern Europe and increasingly in parts of China and India.
Can acid rain burn your skin?
Very strong acids will burn if they touch your skin and can even destroy metals. Acid rain is much, much weaker than this; it is never acidic enough to burn your skin. Rain is always slightly acidic because it mixes with naturally occurring oxides in the air.
What are the disadvantages of acid rain?
What are the disadvantages of acid rain?- Acid rain affects the freshwater ponds and lakes and destroys aquatic life, as some species of fishes are rare and may be extinct.
- It can damage historical monuments and buildings. ...
- A major consequence of more acidic water is its retention of aluminium, which can poison forests.
How does acid rain affect the economy?
Power generating plants and other major producers of acid rain discharge their oxide wastes into the air in order to reduce production costs. This cost saving enables the producer to increase profits and expand production at the expense of those who suffer from acid rain.
