Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a link management protocol that provides path redundancy while preventing undesirable loops in the network. When it comes to ethernet networks, only one active path can exist between two stations in order for them to function properly.

Why do we use Spanning Tree Protocol?

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a Layer 2 network protocol used to prevent looping within a network topology. ... STP can help prevent bridge looping on LANs that include redundant links. Without STP, it would be difficult to implement that redundancy and still avoid network looping.

What is the purpose of Spanning Tree Protocol in switch plans?

The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is responsible for identifying links in the network and shutting down the redundant ones, preventing possible network loops. In order to do so, all switches in the network exchange BPDU messages between them to agree upon the root bridge.

Is Spanning Tree Protocol still used?

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is dead, or at least it should be. ... STP still only has one focal point (root) and can only have one forwarding path toward that one device. Yes, we can use technologies like EtherChannel to help hide portions of the topology for STP, but STP does NOT do multipath forwarding!

What can I use instead of STP?

The two most often discussed alternatives to STP are Shortest Path Bridging (SPB) and Transparent Interconnect of Lots of Links (TRILL). HP is an example of a vendor that appears to be equally committed to both alternatives.

Spanning Tree Protocol Explained | Step by Step

What is STP and how it works?

STP uses the Spanning-Tree Algorithm (SPA) to create a topology database of the network. To prevent loops, SPA places some interfaces in forwarding state and other interfaces in blocking state. ... all switches in a network elect a root switch. All working interfaces on the root switch are placed in forwarding state.

What is the purpose of Spanning Tree Protocol in Switzerland?

The Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) was designed to stop layer 2 loops. All Cisco switches have the STP on by default.

Should I enable STP?

Broadcast storms caused by loops can slow or stop traffic on your network, but STP can prevent loops by ensuring that only one path between each set of switches is active. ... You must enable or disable STP or RSTP for each network location in which you are using Insight Managed Switches.

What is the purpose of Spanning Tree Protocol in a switched LAN as discussed in this chapter?

The purpose of the STP, standardized as IEEE 802.1d, is to prevent loops in bridged or switched networks with redundant links. Bridges or switch ports configured for STP are in one of five different states: blocking, listening, learning, forwarding, and disabled.

Why is Rstp faster than STP?

The STP process to determine network state transitions is slower than the RSTP process because it is timer-based. A device must reinitialize every time a topology change occurs. ... RSTP converges faster because it uses a handshake mechanism based on point-to-point links instead of the timer-based process used by STP.

What are the two key benefits of VLAN's?

VLANs provide a number of advantages, such as ease of administration, confinement of broadcast domains, reduced broadcast traffic, and enforcement of security policies.

What is STP in CCNA?

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a network protocol designed to prevent layer 2 loops. It is standardized as IEEE 802. D protocol. STP blocks some ports on switches with redundant links to prevent broadcast storms and ensure loop-free topology. ... STP prevents loops by placing one of the switch ports in blocking state.

What is the advantage of Pvst+?

PVST+ requires fewer CPU cycles for all the switches in the network. PVST+ reduces bandwidth consumption compared to traditional implementations of STP that use CST. PVST+ optimizes performance on the network through autoselection of the root bridge. PVST+ optimizes performance on the network through load sharing.

When using Spanning Tree Protocol What is the first step?

When using Spanning Tree Protocol, what is the first step in selecting paths through a network? STP must first select the root bridge, or master bridge. 24.

What is the role of STP in a scalable network?

STP is an important component in a scalable network because it allows redundant physical connections between Layer 2 devices to be implemented without creating Layer 2 loops. STP prevents Layer 2 loops from forming by disabling interfaces on Layer 2 devices when they would create a loop.

What happens when STP is disabled?

Disabling Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) can cause Broadcast Storms and Layer 2 Switching Loops, which can make your network down within a short span of time.

Should STP be enabled on all ports?

You configure the command “spanning-tree portfast” on all the ports connecting to end devices like workstations. They then automatically bypass the wait period and DHCP works properly. It's important to only configure this command on ports that connect to end devices though.

What is difference between STP and RSTP?

The main difference between Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP IEEE 802.1W) and Spanning Tree Protocol (STP IEEE 802.1D) is that Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP IEEE 802.1W) assumes the three Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) ports states Listening, Blocking, and Disabled are same (these states do not forward Ethernet ...

What is STP in networking PDF?

STP is a Layer 2 link management protocol that provides path redundancy while preventing loops in the network. ... Infrastructure devices such as wireless bridges and switches send and receive spanning-tree frames, called bridge protocol data units (BPDUs), at regular intervals.

What is protocol 802.1 D used for?

802.1D is the IEEE Media Access Control (MAC) Bridges standard which includes the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Bridging. It details linking to other 802 projects, including the Ethernet and Wi-Fi standards.

How does Spanning Tree Protocol prevent loops?

STP prevents loops by blocking one or more of the links. If one of the links in use goes down, then it would fail over to a previously blocked link. How spanning tree chooses which link to use depends entirely on the topology that it can see.

What is an advantage of using LACP?

It allows directly connected switches to negotiate an EtherChannel link. It provides a simulated environment for testing link aggregation. It decreases the amount of configuration that is needed on a switch.

What is the difference between Pvst and Pvst+?

Per VLAN Spanning Tree (PVST) is a Cisco proprietary protocol that allows a Cisco device to have multiple spanning trees. ... PVST+ is an extension of PVST that allows a Cisco device to also interoperate with devices that are running a single spanning tree (IEEE 802.1Q).

What are the two types of spanning-tree?

STP was originally standardized as IEEE 802.1D but the functionality of spanning tree (802.1D), rapid spanning tree (802.1w), and multiple spanning tree (802.1s) has since been incorporated into IEEE 802.1Q-2014.
