In particular, with the isotope californium-252, alpha-particle decay is important because it determines the half-life, but the expected applications of the isotope exploit its spontaneous fission decay that produces an enormous neutron output.

Why is californium important?

Californium is a radioactive metal. Californium is a very strong neutron emitter. It is used in portable metal detectors, for identifying gold and silver ores, to identify water and oil layers in oil wells and to detect metal fatigue and stress in aeroplanes.

What does californium decay into?

Californium's most stable isotope, californium-251, has a half-life of about 898 years. It decays into curium-247 through alpha decay or decays through spontaneous fission.

What type of decay does californium-252 undergo?

Californium-252 undergoes alpha decay 96.9% of the time to form curium-248 while the remaining 3.1% of decays are spontaneous fission.

What are the dangers of californium?

Californium-252 is a very strong neutron emitter. It is known for being extremely radioactive. Radioactivity damages the gene pool not only of humans, but of all living creatures, causing cancers, immune system damage, leukemias, miscarriages, stillbirths, deformities, and fertility problems.

What is the importance of californium 252?

It is used in neutron moisture gauges, devices that can detect water and oil-bearing layers in oil wells, according to Jefferson Lab. The isotope Cf-252 is a target material for producing transcalifornium elements.

Where can I sell californium?

• Sign up on an altcoin exchange and fund your account with Californium or load Californium into a Bitcoin ATM. ...
• Sell Californium for Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Why is californium 252 so expensive?

Since the discovery of californium in 1950, scientists have only succeeded in producing just 8 grams of californium-252. For this reason, the element is considered as the most expensive of its kind, not to mention that its production, sale and use are highly regulated in most countries.

What are some fun facts about californium?

Some of its properties are: Silver-white and metallic in appearance, with a melting point of approximately 900°C. It is malleable and can be cut using a razor blade. The material has a half-life of 2.645 years and is a strong neutron emitter, meaning it is extremely radioactive, and not normally found in nature.

What are the uses of americium?

Americium is commonly used in smoke alarms, but has few other uses. It has the potential to be used in spacecraft batteries in the future. Currently plutonium is used but availability is poor so alternatives are being considered. It is of interest as part of the decay sequence that occurs in nuclear power production.

Which is the rarest element on the Earth?

A team of researchers using the ISOLDE nuclear-physics facility at CERN has measured for the first time the so-called electron affinity of the chemical element astatine, the rarest naturally occurring element on Earth.

Where is CF on the periodic table?

Californium (Cf), synthetic chemical element of the actinoid series of the periodic table, atomic number 98.

Can you buy francium?

Fast Facts: The Most Expensive Natural Elements

The most expensive natural element is francium, but it decays so quickly it can't be collected to be sold. If you could buy it, you'd pay billions of dollars for 100 grams. The most expensive natural element that is stable enough to purchase is lutetium.

Is francium a metal?

francium (Fr), heaviest chemical element of Group 1 (Ia) in the periodic table, the alkali metal group.

How strong is californium?

How Strong Is Californium-252? Californium-252 is an exceptionally strong neutron emitter and is the only identified isotope with the ability to emit neutrons spontaneously. In one minute, one microgram of the material can release up to 170 million neutrons.

What is the use of krypton 85?

Radioactive krypton-85 is used to detect leaks from sealed containers, with the escaping atoms being identified through their radiation. Krypton-85 is also used to excite phosphors in light sources with no external source of energy and in medicine to detect abnormal heart openings.

What is the half-life of californium-252 is 5 years?

The ²⁵²Cf isotope has a half-life of 2.645 years and decays via alpha emission and spontaneous fission (3.09% of the decays are through spontaneous fission).
