Necrotizing fasciitis can lead to sepsis, shock, and organ failure. It can also result in life-long complications from loss of limbs or severe scarring due to surgically removing infected tissue. Even with treatment, up to 1 in 3 people with necrotizing fasciitis die from the infection.

Why is it important to know about necrotizing fasciitis?

Necrotizing fasciitis spreads rapidly and can cause extensive tissue death, so prompt treatment is crucial. Early detection minimizes the need for the surgical removal of skin and soft tissue, and it reduces the risk of toxic shock.

Is necrotizing fasciitis life-threatening?

Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by a rapidly progressing necrosis of subcutaneous fat and fascia, which can be life-threatening without prompt recognition, surgical intervention, and immediate antibiotic therapy.

What are the most common complications of necrotizing fasciitis?

• Renal failure.
• Septic shock with cardiovascular collapse.
• Scarring with cosmetic deformity.
• Limb loss.
• Sepsis.
• Toxic shock syndrome.

How does necrotizing fasciitis affect the immune system?

It is not fully understood why group A streptococcus bacteria sometimes cause necrotizing fasciitis. However, these bacteria make toxins that destroy body tissue directly. The bacteria also cause the body's immune system to destroy its own tissue while fighting the infection.

Is necrotizing fasciitis fatal?

Necrotizing fasciitis (NECK-re-tie-zing FASH-e-i-tis) is a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly in the body and can cause death. Accurate diagnosis, rapid antibiotic treatment, and prompt surgery are important to stopping this infection.

Why does necrotizing fasciitis spread so quickly?

The infection often begins like most others – through a cut or a scrape. However, unlike other infections, this one spreads very quickly as the bacteria do their damage. They grow and release a harmful substance that destroys surrounding tissue and can enter the blood stream.

What body system does necrotizing fasciitis affect?

Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious infection of the skin, the tissue just beneath the skin (subcutaneous tissue), and the tissue that covers internal organs (fascia). Necrotizing fasciitis can be caused by several different types of bacteria , and the infection can arise suddenly and spread quickly.

What are the odds of surviving necrotizing fasciitis?

Prognosis and Complications

The mortality rate of necrotizing fasciitis ranges from 24% to 34%. Coincident necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) have a mortality rate of 60%. Extensive surgical debridement and amputations are not uncommon.

How is necrotizing fasciitis treated?

1. Intravenous antibiotic therapy.
2. Surgery to remove damaged or dead tissue in order to stop the spread of infection.
3. Medications to raise blood pressure.
4. Amputations of affected limbs, in some cases.
5. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be recommended to preserve healthy tissue.

Is necrotizing fasciitis curable?

Flesh-eating strep infections or necrotizing fasciitis is considered rare. Necrotizing fasciitis is a treatable disease. Only certain rare bacterial strains are able to cause necrotizing fasciitis, but these infections progress rapidly so the sooner one seeks medical care, the better the chances of survival.

What happens if necrotic tissue is not removed?

While there is significant disagreement on the correct elocution of the word, the literature is clear that proper debridement is critical to propel wounds toward healing. Necrotic tissue, if left unchecked in a wound bed, prolongs the inflammatory phase of wound healing and can lead to wound infection.

What does dying skin look like?

Symptoms of Necrotizing Skin Infections

The skin may look pale at first but quickly becomes red or bronze and warm to the touch and sometimes swollen. Later, the skin turns violet, often with the development of large fluid-filled blisters (bullae).

What is the epidemiology of necrotizing fasciitis?

The incidence of necrotizing fasciitis in adults is 0.40 cases per 100,000 people/year and the incidence in children is higher at 0.08 cases per 100,000 people/year. The overall mortality rate in the United states from 2003- 2013 was 4.8/1,000,000 per year.

What causes necrotic wounds?

Necrosis can be caused by a number of external sources, including injury, infection, cancer, infarction, poisons, and inflammation. Black necrotic tissue is formed when healthy tissue dies and becomes dehydrated, typically as a result of local ischemia.

What virulence factor causes necrotizing fasciitis?

Introduction. Group A Streptococcus pyogenes is an important gram-positive bacterial pathogen that causes a wide variety of clinical conditions, ranging from pharyngitis to severe invasive infections and necrotizing fasciitis.

Who is most likely to get necrotizing?

Many people who get necrotizing fasciitis are in good health before they get the infection. Your risk of getting this infection is higher if you: Have a weak immune system. Have chronic health problems such as diabetes, cancer, or liver or kidney disease.

Is necrotizing fasciitis a genetic disease?

The researchers identified gene variants that offered protection against severe forms of infection. And they found others that made patients more likely to develop potentially fatal toxic shock syndrome or necrotising fasciitis, which causes rapid loss of flesh.

How long can you live with necrosis?

Median survival was 10.0 years (95% confidence interval: 7.25-13.11).

How does necrotizing fasciitis affect cells?

As the tissue dies, the bacteria enters the blood and rapidly spreads throughout the body." In the case of S. pyogenes, the bacteria produces a toxin known as a superantigen, which activates white blood cells called T-cells, causing an overproduction of proteins called cytokines. These wreck havoc on cells.

Does necrotising fasciitis affect muscle?

Necrotising fasciitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection that affects the tissue beneath the skin and surrounding muscles and organs (fascia).

What does gangrene smell like?

Loss of color in the affected body part: The area will become discolored and eventually turn dry and dark. The color will change from red to black in dry gangrene, or it will become swollen and foul-smelling in wet gangrene. Gas gangrene will produce particularly foul-smelling, brownish pus.

Is necrotizing fasciitis acute or chronic?

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), also known as flesh-eating disease, is a bacterial infection that results in the death of parts of the body's soft tissue. It is a severe disease of sudden onset that spreads rapidly. Symptoms usually include red or purple skin in the affected area, severe pain, fever, and vomiting.

What happens a month before death?

1 to 3 months before death, your loved one is likely to: Sleep or doze more. Eat and drink less. Withdraw from people and stop doing things they used to enjoy.

What happens few minutes before death?

What happens when someone dies? In time, the heart stops and they stop breathing. Within a few minutes, their brain stops functioning entirely and their skin starts to cool. At this point, they have died.
