Electrotherapy is used for relaxation of muscle spasms, prevention and retardation of disuse atrophy, increase of local blood circulation, muscle rehabilitation, and reeducation by electrical muscle stimulation, maintaining and increasing range of motion, management of chronic and intractable pain, posttraumatic acute ...

What are the 3 main reasons we use electrical stimulation?

Electrical stimulation is a type of therapeutic treatment that can serve many different purposes in physical therapy. It can be used to decrease pain and inflammation, improve circulation,1 and it can help your muscles contract properly.

What are the side effects of electrotherapy?

The most common side effect with electrotherapy is skin irritation or rash, caused by the adhesives in the electrodes or the tape holding the electrodes in place. Overusing electrotherapy may cause a burning feeling in the skin. Directions about the duration of therapy should be followed closely to avoid a problem.

What is the importance of electrotherapy in the field of physical therapy?

benefits of electrotherapy in physiotherapy

Reduces body pain. Alleviates nerve pain. Accelerates healing of musculoskeletal injuries. Increases blood circulation in the body.

What are electrodes used for in physical therapy?

The electrodes attached to the skin deliver impulses that make the muscles contract. It is beneficial in increasing the patient's range of motion and improves the circulation of the body. It is used in treating conditions like sprains, arthritis, back pain scoliosis and sciatica.

What is Electrotherapy ?

How often can you use electrotherapy?

You can begin with one 15-minute therapy session. Repeat for another 15 minutes if needed. Use up to three times per day at a maximum. During each therapy, rate your pain before and after the session, 1 (low) to 10 (high) in order to gauge the true reduction of pain.

What does electrotherapy do to the brain?

It may promote changes in how brain cells communicate with each other at synapses and it may stimulate the development of new brain cells. ECT may flood the brain with neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are known to be involved in conditions like depression and schizophrenia.

Can electrotherapy hurt you?

While typically not serious, side effects of electrotherapy can include skin irritation or rash. If you have broken skin or an infection, it is advised you avoid using electrotherapy on those areas of your body.

What are the benefits of electrical muscle stimulation?

• Stimulates Muscular Blood Flow. EMS has been shown to increase blood flood (often when done at lower frequencies) to muscle tissues (1). ...
• Enhanced Muscular Strength and Power. ...
• Reduced Muscle Pain. ...
• Improved Psychological Recovery.

Why do athletes use electrical stimulation?

EMS delivers a clean, complete muscle contraction.

Using an EMS, an athlete can contract a muscle group more completely and cleanly than by lifting weights. EMS bypasses the “noise” and works directly on the muscle to get a complete contraction.

How does electrotherapy work on muscles?

These mild electrical currents target either muscles or nerves. E-stim therapy for muscle recovery sends signals to targeted muscles to make them contract. (Flexing your biceps is a form of muscle contraction.) By causing repeated muscle contractions, blood flow improves, helping repair injured muscles.

Does electrotherapy burn fat?

Surprisingly, without modifying their exercise or diet, the EMS did indeed cause significant effects on decreasing waist circumference, abdominal obesity, subcutaneous fat mass, and body fat percentage, leading the researchers to conclude: “The use of the high-frequency current therapy may be beneficial for reducing ...

When should you not use electrotherapy?

1. A change in tissue sensation.
2. Impaired mental status.
3. Presence of an implanted electrical device (the e-stim could interfere with pacemakers or implanted pain stimulators)6.
4. Malignant tissue.
5. Wounds that are too moist.

How do electrodes work?

Electrodes are vital components of electrochemical cells. They transport produced electrons from one half-cell to another, which produce an electrical charge. This charge is based off a standard electrode system (SHE) with a reference potential of 0 volts and serves as a medium for any cell potential calculation.

Does ECT damage the brain?

Despite many scientific and governmental authorities having concluded that ECT does not cause brain damage, there is significant evidence that ECT has indeed caused brain damage in some patients, both historically and recently, and evidence that it always causes some form or degree of brain damage.

Does ECT cause memory loss?

The most persistent adverse effect is retrograde amnesia. Shortly after ECT, most patients have gaps in their memory for events that occurred close in time to the course of ECT, but the amnesia may extend back several months or years. Retrograde amnesia usually improves during the first few months after ECT.

Is there electricity in your brain?

Your brain generates enough electricity to power a lightbulb. ... And while a single neuron generates only a tiny amount of electricity, all your neurons together can generate enough electricity to power a low-wattage bulb.

What burst TENS?

Burst-mode TENS stimulates peripheral nerve fibers using relatively high carrier frequencies (80–100 pps), modulated burst frequencies (2–5 bps), and intensities above or below the motor threshold.

Can you sleep with a TENS machine on?

Do not use a TENS unit with heating pads or cold packs. Do not use TENS while sleeping.

Can TENS be harmful?

TENS is generally regarded as safe. But it has risks just like any other medical procedure. For example, if the electrical current is too high or the electrodes are placed on the wrong part of the body, it can burn or irritate the skin. The "danger zones" include the brain, heart, eyes, genitals, and throat.

Does a TENS unit promote healing?

It is suggested that TENS stimulates skin wound healing and tendon repair, as well as the viability of random skin flaps. Such effects may be due to the release of SP and CGRP, which would increase blood flow and, consequently, hasten the events of tissue repair.

How long should you use electrical muscle stimulation?

This sensation should be noticeable, but not overly intense. An electric stimulation treatment lasts about 10 or 15 minutes.

Can electrical stimulation cause nerve damage?

Generally, greater intensity, higher frequency, and longer pulse width stimulation lead to more severe damage in nerve cells (McCreery et al., 2004). In addition, although short-term electrical stimulation is not damaging to nervous tissue, chronic electrical stimulation can damage nerve structure.
