General anesthesia is a common cause of atelectasis. It changes your regular pattern of breathing and affects the exchange of lung gases, which can cause the air sacs (alveoli) to deflate. Nearly everyone who has major surgery develops some amount of atelectasis.

Why are post op patients at risk for atelectasis?

The main risk factors for developing atelectasis in the surgical patient include: Age. Smoking. Use of general anaesthesia.

How does Anaesthesia cause atelectasis?

Causes of atelectasis formation during general anaesthesia

Compression atelectasis occurs when the transmural pressure distending the alveolus is reduced. Absorption atelectasis occurs when less gas enters the alveolus than is removed by uptake by the blood.

What is the most common respiratory disorder after surgery?

Recent findings: General anesthesia and surgery are the main causes of postoperative respiratory complications. Atelectasis, a common respiratory complication, may contribute to pneumonia and acute respiratory failure.

How does surgery affect your lungs?

Breathing Problems

Anesthesia hampers your normal breathing and stifles your urge to cough. After chest or abdominal surgery, it could hurt to breathe in deeply or push air out. Mucus may build up in your lungs.

Atelectasis: Etiology, Clinical Features, Pathology, pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment

How is atelectasis treated after surgery?

Postoperative atelectasis is treated with adequate oxygenation and re-expansion of the lung segments. Supplemental oxygen should be titrated to achieve an arterial oxygen saturation of greater than 90%. Severe hypoxemia associated with severe respiratory distress should lead to intubation and mechanical support.

How long does postoperative atelectasis last?

[8,18] The atelectasis can exceed 15–20%. The degree of atelectasis can be even more in obese patients. In the case of abdominal surgeries, the atelectasis can persist for several weeks postoperatively.

How common is atelectasis after surgery?

Atelectasis is one of the most common breathing (respiratory) complications after surgery. It's also a possible complication of other respiratory problems, including cystic fibrosis, lung tumors, chest injuries, fluid in the lung and respiratory weakness.

How common is post operative atelectasis?

General anesthesia and surgical manipulation lead to atelectasis by causing diaphragmatic dysfunction and diminished surfactant activity. The atelectasis is typically basilar and segmental in distribution. After induction of anesthesia, atelectasis increases from 1 to 11% of total lung volume.

What is atelectasis caused by?

Atelectasis, the collapse of part or all of a lung, is caused by a blockage of the air passages (bronchus or bronchioles) or by pressure on the lung. Risk factors for atelectasis include anesthesia, prolonged bed rest with few changes in position, shallow breathing and underlying lung disease.

What type of atelectasis is the most common?

Obstructive atelectasis is the most common type and results from reabsorption of gas from the alveoli when communication between the alveoli and the trachea is obstructed. The obstruction can occur at the level of the larger or smaller bronchus.

Which of the following are signs and symptoms of atelectasis?

• Trouble breathing (shortness of breath)
• Increased heart rate.
• Coughing.
• Chest pain.
• Skin and lips turning blue.

Why does intubation cause atelectasis?

The right upper lobe atelectasis results when the endotracheal tube is inserted too deeply into the tracheobronchial tree and the lip of the endotracheal tube rests against the right upper lobe orifice, obstructing it and causing atelectasis of the right upper lobe.

Which of the following procedures produces the highest risk of atelectasis?

[5] Atelectasis is more prominent after cardiac surgery with cardio-pulmonary bypass than after other types of surgery, including thoracotomies; however, patients undergoing abdominal and/or thoracic procedures are at increased risk of developing atelectasis.

What are the 3 types of atelectasis?

There are three major types of atelectasis: adhesive, compressive, and obstructive.

Why would a post surgical patients lungs collapse if there was nothing wrong with them before surgery?

Surgery: Having surgery is a major risk factor for having atelectasis. 1 There are two primary reasons for this: the being on a ventilator during surgery and the inability to cough to clear the lungs while under anesthesia. The ability to take a deep breath and cough helps prevent atelectasis.

Why do you get fluid in your lungs after surgery?

Pulmonary edema or plural effusion

However, in pleural effusion, water fluid collects in the layers of the pleura that are ouside the lungs. It can result from heart failure, cirrhosis, or a pulmonary embolism. It can also occur after heart surgery.

Is fluid in the lungs normal after surgery?

The air then fills the space outside of the lung, between the lung and chest wall. Atelectasis is common after surgery or in people who are or were in the hospital. Risk factors for developing atelectasis include: Anesthesia.

Should I worry about atelectasis?

In an adult, atelectasis in a small area of the lung is usually not life threatening. The rest of the lung can make up for the collapsed area, bringing in enough oxygen for the body to function.

Who is at risk for atelectasis?

You may be at higher risk of atelectasis if you smoke or have other conditions, including obesity, sleep apnea, or lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, or cystic fibrosis. You are also at higher risk if you recently had surgery.

What is postoperative atelectasis?

Atelectasis is a common postoperative complication and should be suspected whenever elevations of temperature, pulse rate and respiratory rate develop in a patient shortly after operation. Generally it is due to either bronchial obstruction with distal gas absorption or to hypoventilation.

Does atelectasis go away?

Treatment of atelectasis depends on the cause. Mild atelectasis may go away without treatment. Sometimes, medications are used to loosen and thin mucus. If the condition is due to a blockage, surgery or other treatments may be needed.

Is Subsegmental atelectasis serious?

By definition, subsegmental atelectasis (regardless of its etiology) does not produce volume loss and subsequent shifting of mobile thoracic structures, and in most cases lacks clinical relevance and does not need to be reported.

Does oxygen help atelectasis?

Ventilation of the lungs with pure oxygen after a vital capacity manoeuvre that had re-opened a previously collapsed lung tissue results in rapid reappearance of atelectasis. If 40% O2 in nitrogen is used for ventilation of the lungs, atelectasis reappears slowly.

What is the difference between a pneumothorax and atelectasis?

A collapsed lung happens when air enters the pleural space, the area between the lung and the chest wall. If it is a total collapse, it is called pneumothorax. If only part of the lung is affected, it is called atelectasis.
