A pyeloplasty is done when the tube that drains urine from the kidney and into the bladder is blocked. This pushes the urine back into the kidney, which can cause loss of kidney function, infections and pain. Pyeloplasty can help fix these problems and prevent them from getting worse or coming back.

How painful is a pyeloplasty?

Is a pyeloplasty painful? You or your child may feel some pain after pyeloplasty. The pain may go away after a week and you or your child will be given medications to help minimize this pain.

How long does it take to recover from pyeloplasty?

Recovery. Time to complete recovery is typically 3-4 weeks compared with 8 weeks for open pyeloplasty.

What causes pyeloplasty?

Why does my child need a pyeloplasty? Your child has a blockage where the renal pelvis connects with the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder. This narrowing causes dilation of the kidney, a condition called hydronephrosis.

What can I expect after pyeloplasty surgery?

No heavy lifting or exertion for up to 4 weeks following surgery. Patients may begin driving once they are off of narcotic pain medication and have full range of motion at their waist. Most patients can return to full activity including work on an average 3-4 weeks after surgery.

How stent is remove after pyeloplasty?

The stent is removed in the operating room a few weeks after surgery. This is a same day surgery procedure. Another tube, called a drain, may be inserted in the area around the kidney and ureter to drain extra fluid that can collect during and after surgery. Once the drainage stops the drain is removed at the bedside.

Can a UPJ obstruction come back after surgery?

Once the UPJ obstruction is fixed, it almost never comes back. Note that patients who have had UPJ obrstruction may have a slightly greater risk of future kidney stones or infection. This is because the kidneys may still contain some pooled urine, even though overall drainage is improved.

How long does pain last after pyeloplasty?

You may experience some minor transient shoulder pain (1-2 days) related to the carbon dioxide gas used to inflate your abdomen during the laparoscopic surgery.

Is UPJ obstruction serious?

If undiagnosed or left untreated, chronic UPJ obstruction can lead to significant kidney damage and the gradual loss of kidney function. This is especially true of patients who are diagnosed later in life. Urinary tract infections become common and can be more serious than usual.

Does kidney improve after pyeloplasty?

Conclusions: Renal function did not improve after pyeloplasty regardless of the initial level of relative function. Renal scan revealed that differential function decreased after pyeloplasty in some patients in whom hydronephrosis was detected prenatally and who were initially followed with observation.

How many types of pyeloplasty are there?

There are different types of pyeloplasty depending on the surgical technique and patterns of incision used. These include the Y-V, Inverted 'U,' and Dismembered types of pyeloplasty. The dismembered type of pyeloplasty (called as Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty) is the most common type of pyeloplasty.

How do they fix a blocked kidney?

Your doctor (urologist) may recommend: A ureteral stent, a hollow tube inserted inside the ureter to keep it open. Percutaneous nephrostomy, during which your doctor inserts a tube through your back to drain the kidney directly.

What is the surgery called for hydronephrosis?

The most common surgical procedure is pyeloplasty. This repairs the most common type of blockage that causes hydronephrosis: ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJ). In pyeloplasty, the surgeon will remove the narrowed or obstructed part of the ureter.

How do you fix a UPJ obstruction?

Most cases of UPJ obstruction actually do not require surgery and resolve on their own. However, if patients exhibit pain, recurrent infections, evidence of worsening function or increasing swelling, they may require a surgery called a pyeloplasty to prevent kidney injury and correct the blockage.
