Storm surge is caused primarily by the strong winds in a hurricane or tropical storm. The low pressure of the storm has minimal contribution! The wind circulation around the eye of a hurricane (left above) blows on the ocean surface and produces a vertical circulation in the ocean (right above).

What is storm surge and how is it caused?

Storm surge is purely water level rise caused by hurricane winds and low pressure. However, when surge levels are combined with the already-present tide, "storm surge" becomes "storm tide". If storm surge hits a coastal area during its high tide, it can cause even more damage.

What can cause floods and storm surges?

• Heavy rainfall.
• Ocean waves coming on shore, such as a storm surge.
• Melting snow and ice, as well as ice jams.
• Dams or levees breaking.

Why does flooding occur?

What is flooding? Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts quickly, or when dams or levees break. ... Flash floods occur when heavy rainfall exceeds the ability of the ground to absorb it.

How do storm floods occur?

Why do floods occur? Flooding occurs most commonly from heavy rainfall when natural watercourses do not have the capacity to carry excess water. ... In coastal areas, water inundation can be caused by a storm surge as a result of a tropical cyclone, a tsunami or a high tide coinciding with higher than normal river levels.

Understanding Storm Surge

How do storm surges work?

Storm surge is produced by water being pushed toward the shore by the force of the winds moving cyclonically around the storm. The impact on surge of the low pressure associated with intense storms is minimal in comparison to the water being forced toward the shore by the wind.

What causes the storm surge that often accompanies a cyclone making landfall?

Most of the surge is caused by friction between the strong winds in the storm's eyewall and the ocean surface, which piles water up in the direction that the wind is blowing. ... Flooding caused by the storm surge is responsible for most of the deaths associated with tropical cyclone landfalls.

How can you prevent storm surges?

Storm surge gates / flood barriers are fixed installations that allow water to pass in normal conditions and have gates or bulkheads that can be closed against storm surges or spring tides to prevent flooding. They can close the sea mouth of a river or waterway.

How long do storm surges last?

Depending on the size and track of the hurricane, storm surge flooding can last for several hours. It then recedes after the storm passes. Water level heights during a hurricane can reach 20 feet or more above normal sea level.

How fast is a storm surge?

A storm surge is water that is pushed onto shore by a hurricane. It is rarely a "wall of water" as often claimed, but rather a rise of water that can be as rapid as several feet in just a few minutes. The storm surge moves with the forward speed of the hurricane — typically 10-15 mph.

What are the effects of storm surge?

A storm surge is a rise in sea level that occurs during tropical cyclones, intense storms also known as typhoons or hurricanes. The storms produce strong winds that push the water into shore, which can lead to flooding. This makes storm surges very dangerous for coastal regions.

How do Cyclones create storm surges?

A storm surge is generated by weather systems forcing water onshore over a stretch of coastline. It will normally build up over a time frame of a few hours, as the cyclone or other weather system approaches. A Tsunami is generated by earthquakes, undersea landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions or meteorites.

What is a cyclone storm surge?

Cyclones produce very strong and potentially destructive winds that rotate clockwise around a calm centre (the 'eye'). A storm surge is a rise above the normal water level along a shore resulting from strong onshore winds and / or reduced atmospheric pressure.

Is storm surge a natural disaster?

The storm surge is the biggest natural hazard causing people and property loss in the Chinese coastal zone. ... The rise of seawater temperature with the sea level rise may cause the increase of tropical cyclone hazard, so then aggravating the storm surge hazard.

What should you do during a storm surge?

1. Stay inside where you are protected from the water. ...
2. Monitor the storm's progress and listen for warnings or instructions from local officials.
3. Before driving anywhere, listen carefully to rescue officials who will be coordinating evacuation plans.
4. Do not drive through flood waters.

Why do cyclones occur?

Cyclone is system of winds rotating inwards at a high speed with the area of low pressure in the middle. ... When warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from near the surface, a cyclone is formed. When the air rises up and away from the ocean surface, it creates an area of lower air pressure below.

Where is storm surge the worst?

The storm surge exists on the dirty side because winds spin around the storm counterclockwise, meaning the wind in this sector blows onshore, pushing water onto land. Typically, the faster the wind speed and forward motion of the hurricane, the higher the storm surge will be.

What is the largest storm surge?

The world record for a storm surge is 13 m, occurring during landfall of Tropical Cyclone (TC) Mahina in northeast Australia, March 1899. The central pressure of this cyclone has been reported as 914 hPa as measured by a ship's barometers during passage of the eye.

Does wind cause storm?

Intense winter storms are frequently the cause of long-lasting windstorms. Such winter low-pressure systems have large horizontal pressure differences and are always accompanied by strong jet-stream winds aloft. ... Warm air flowing poleward to the east of intense low-pressure systems can also produce windstorms.

What are the environmental impacts of storm surge?

What is the environmental impact of storm surge? Impact of Storm Surge A storm surge can lead to extreme flooding in coastal areas, causing property damage, loss of human life, coastal erosion, change in ecosystem etc. The two most vulnerable areas during storm surge are the estuaries and coastal areas.

How storm are formed?

Storms are created when a center of low pressure develops with the system of high pressure surrounding it. This combination of opposing forces can create winds and result in the formation of storm clouds such as cumulonimbus.

Can a storm surge be predicted?

It's hard to predict exactly how big a storm surge will be because it depends on so many things. It's affected by the intensity of the storm, forward speed, size, angle of approach to the coast, pressure, and the shape of the coastline.

Why was Katrina storm surge so high?

“Katrina came into the Mississippi Gulf Coast on the worst possible track for a high storm surge,” he says. “The shallow depth of the offshore shelf in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the bay-like shape of the shoreline, contributed to the high surge.”

What is the deadliest part of a hurricane?

The Right Side of the StormAs a general rule of thumb, the hurricane's right side (relative to the direction it is travelling) is the most dangerous part of the storm because of the additive effect of the hurricane wind speed and speed of the larger atmospheric flow (the steering winds).

What is strongest hurricane ever?

Currently, Hurricane Wilma is the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded, after reaching an intensity of 882 mbar (hPa; 26.05 inHg) in October 2005; at the time, this also made Wilma the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide outside of the West Pacific, where seven tropical cyclones have been recorded to intensify ...
