The ancient traditional tool of the smith is a forge or smithy, which is a fire which allows compressed air (through a bellows) to heat the inside of the forge until it is hot enough for metal to become more malleable so that it can be hammered into the shape that is required.

What does hammering hot metal do?

Striking a piece of hot metal with a hammer is forging, and blacksmiths have been doing this for centuries. As blacksmiths experimented with new techniques, they learned that complex shapes could be created by hammering metal into a die. The die contains the shape of the finished product.

Why do blacksmiths heat metal?

Blacksmiths put solid hard iron into a forge and heat it at a temperature high enough to soften it. ... Because if you don't, the iron will turn solid hard as before, and changing its shape then would be impossible.

What is the purpose of quenching a metal?

In materials science, quenching is the rapid cooling of a workpiece in water, oil or air to obtain certain material properties. A type of heat treating, quenching prevents undesired low-temperature processes, such as phase transformations, from occurring.

Why do blacksmiths put hot metal in water?

Blacksmiths put metal in water because water submersion will allow the forger to control the brittleness and overall strength of the metal. This is referred to as “quenching,” and is used by many blacksmiths to decrease the risk of breakage when crafting new pieces.

Is it better to quench in oil or water?

Oil is preferable to the traditional quenching medium of water because it reduces the risks of distortions or cracking by cooling metals more evenly and more quickly.

What happens if you pour cold water on a hot metal?

Over time the metal will cool and the water will heat up. Eventually the two objects will have the same temperature. They are then said to be in thermal equilibrium with one another. During the intervening time the hot metal is transfering energy to the water.

Why is quenching important?

Quenching improves a metal's performance by rapidly cooling the heated metal, thereby altering its molecular structure and increasing its hardness. The rate of quenching may be adjusted to achieve the desired properties.

Why do we quench reactions?

quenching a reaction to deactivate any unreacted reagents. cooling the reaction mixture or adding an antisolvent to induce precipitation, and collecting or removing the solids by filtration, decantation, or centrifugation. ... separating the reaction mixture into organic and aqueous layers by liquid-liquid extraction.

Why hardening is done?

Hardening is a metallurgical metalworking process used to increase the hardness of a metal. The hardness of a metal is directly proportional to the uniaxial yield stress at the location of the imposed strain. A harder metal will have a higher resistance to plastic deformation than a less hard metal.

What do modern blacksmiths make?

Modern-day blacksmiths craft items from wrought iron and steel. They use many of the same tools as their ancestors, including hammers, anvils and pliers, to shape and weld metals. Depending on the job, they may craft wrenches, shovels, jigs and dies, bicycle stands, home decor items, fences and other objects.

Why does heating iron make it stronger?

As electrons pass through the metal, they scatter as they collide with the metallic structure. When the metal is heated, the electrons absorb more energy and move faster. This leads to more scattering, thus increasing the amount of resistance.

What did a whitesmith do?

A whitesmith is a metalworker who does finishing work on iron and steel such as filing, lathing, burnishing or polishing. The term also refers to a person who works with "white" or light-coloured metals, and is sometimes used as a synonym for tinsmith.

Why did blacksmiths use hammers?

It is used with a hand hammer for cutting both hot and cold metal. The blacksmith uses many different types and styles of tongs (Fig. ... They are often made for one specific job or adapted for a particular workpiece and will vary in length, size and weight, as metal sizes also vary.

When did blacksmiths stop?

The nadir of blacksmithing in the United States was reached during the 1960s, when most of the former blacksmiths had left the trade, and few if any new people were entering the trade.

Why are blacksmiths called blacksmiths?

blacksmith, also called smith, craftsman who fabricates objects out of iron by hot and cold forging on an anvil. The term blacksmith derives from iron, formerly called “black metal,” and farrier from the Latin ferrum, “iron.” ...

Why do you quench steel in oil?

Quench oil serves two primary functions. It facilitates hardening of steel by controlling heat transfer during quenching, and it enhances wetting of steel during quenching to minimize the formation of undesirable thermal and transformational gradients which may lead to increased distortion and cracking.

Why is it important to quench a Grignard reaction?

Since ethers are more or less polar, they tend to absorb moisture from the air. The water reacts with the Grignard reagent and destroys it. ... The addition of hydrochloric acid is necessary to quench the left over Grignard reagent and to convert the magnesium alcoholate into the alcohol.

Does metal get stronger when heated?

This simple act, if heated to an exact temperature range, can create a more pure, hard metal. It's often used to create steel that is stronger than annealing the metal, but also creates a less ductile product. So, heat can indeed make metal weaker. However, there are many processes where metal is strengthened by heat.

Does quenching make metal brittle?

Quenching results in a metal that is very hard but also brittle. Gently heating a hardened metal and allowing it to cool slowly will produce a metal that is still hard but also less brittle.

Does quenching increase toughness?

Quenching and Tempering (Q&T) has been utilized for decades to alter steel mechanical properties, particularly strength and toughness. While tempering typically increases toughness, a well-established phenomenon called tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) is known to occur during conventional Q&T.

How does heat treatment affect metal properties?

Annealing changes a metal's properties by altering and realigning the grain structure using heat, making the metal softer and more ductile. In this process, the steel is heated to just above its re-crystallization point, allowing it to cool slowly. A full anneal involves leaving the metal to cool in the furnace itself.

Can hot metal crack glass?

When heated, thin glass begins to crack and typically breaks at 302–392 degrees Fahrenheit. ... However, high heat (>300°F) and excessive thermal variations can cause glass to shatter or break.

Why does metal click when cool?

Why Does Metal Click When It Warms Up Or Cools In A Wood Stove? The clicking or ticking noises made by wood stoves is down to the combined forces of thermal expansion and static friction. ... The top and front of the stove help radiate the heat into the room and so these parts do get very hot during a fire.

Why is hot metal placed in cold water?

If you add cold water to a hot pan, the temperature in the metal drops locally (where the water touches the metal) and since metal extend with heat, cooling them down contracts them. ... This property of metal can be characterized by the thermal expansion coefficients.
