Photosynthetic protists such as the various types of algae contain plastids. These organelles serve as the site of photosynthesis (the process of harvesting sunlight to produce nutrients in the form of carbohydrates). The plastids of some protists are similar to those of plants.

How did protists become photosynthetic?

Scientists speculate that, in a process called endosymbiosis, an ancestral prokaryote engulfed a photosynthetic cyanobacterium that evolved into modern-day chloroplasts. Molecular and morphological evidence suggest that the chlorarachniophyte protists are derived from a secondary endosymbiotic event.

What are the photosynthetic protists?

• Dinoflagellates. Most of them are marine but some occur in fresh water. Some show bioluminescence. Nutrition is photosynthetic. ...
• Chrysophytes. They include diatoms and desmids. For example, Spirogyra, Cymbella.
• Euglenoids. Occur in fresh water and damp soils. Nutrition is holophytic.

Do protists have photosynthetic organisms?

Protists that are capable of photosynthesis include various types of algae, diatoms, dinoflagellates, and euglena. These organisms are often unicellular but can form colonies. ... Photosynthetic protists are considered plant-like protists.

Where is a photosynthetic protist?

The plant–like protists are abundantly found in both fresh water and sea water. As photosynthetic organisms, the plant–like protists use light and simple inorganic materials to make their food and to produce oxygen.

Photosynthetic Protists - Chrysophytes

Why is euglena photosynthetic?

Euglenas create their own food through photosynthesis, the process of absorbing sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. An eyespot at the front end of the euglena detects light, and its chloroplasts (structures that contain chlorophyll) trap the sunlight, allowing photosynthesis to occur.

How do protists function as carbon sinks?

How does is relate to protists? The movement of carbon atoms from carbon dioxide molecules in the atmosphere to organisms in the soil or the ocean and then back to the atmosphere. Protists play a key role in the global carbon cycle and act as carbon sinks that could help reduce global warming.

How can you tell if a protist is photosynthetic?

Because we know that photosynthesis is a process that plants use, we can define photosynthetic protists as 'plant-like' protists that get their nutrients by converting sunlight into energy using photosynthesis. Some examples of exclusively photosynthetic protists include some phytoplankton and unicellular algae.

Why photosynthetic protists are considered as the major producers of the biosphere?

Photosynthetic protists serve as producers of nutrition for other organisms. Protists like zooxanthellae have a symbiotic relationship with coral reefs; the protists act as a food source for coral and the coral provides shelter and compounds for photosynthesis for the protists.

Which of the following protists are not photosynthetic?

Chryophytes are not photosynthetic protists.

Which protists have photosynthetic pigments similar to those of the cyanobacteria?

Thus they have similar pigment composition. -Option D is Diatoms and euglenoids. As stated above the pigments in diatoms are carotenoid and fucoxanthin. The euglenoids are mostly green in color due to the presence of chlorophyll.

Why do protists live in aqueous environments?

-They live in aquatic environment because they have many advantages with water and they require it to live. ... -It also absorbs the water and uses them mange their wastes. Reproduction. - The water environments also makes it a nice environment for them to reproduce through binary fission.

Is Protista autotrophic or heterotrophic?

Protista is both heterotroph and autotroph, and they are ALL eukaryotes. "That means that most of their metabolic processes(chemical reactions) take place inside their membrane-bound organelles. (textbook). There are three different type of things that are called Protists: protozoans, algae, and molds.

Are protists eukaryotic or prokaryotic?

protist, any member of a group of diverse eukaryotic, predominantly unicellular microscopic organisms. They may share certain morphological and physiological characteristics with animals or plants or both.

Why do photosynthetic protists play a critical role in aquatic ecosystems?

In the oceans, protists play critical roles in the functioning of food webs and the cycling of carbon and nutrients. ... Photosynthetic protists (e.g. diatoms, dinoflagellates) are the major primary producers in most marine ecosystems.

Why is the protist lineages originally classified into the kingdom Protista continue to be examined and debated?

During the past two decades, the field of molecular genetics has demonstrated that some protists are more related to animals, plants, or fungi than they are to other protists. ... For this reason, protist lineages originally classified into the kingdom Protista continue to be examined and debated.

Why is the kingdom Protista considered the junk drawer Kingdom?

Protists are eukaryotic–they have a nucleus, but they don't fit into any of the other eukaryotic filing cabinets known as animals, plants, and fungi. ... For this reason, Kingdom Protista is occasionally called the “junk drawer kingdom.”

Do protists have lysosomes?

Some protists, for instance, engulf other cells for food. In a process called phagocytosis, the protist surrounds a food particle and engulfs it within a vesicle. ... The enzymes break the food down into smaller parts for use by the protist. Lysosomes, however, are found in all kinds of cells.

What do photosynthetic mean?

: synthesis of chemical compounds with the aid of radiant energy and especially light especially : formation of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and a source of hydrogen (such as water) in the chlorophyll-containing cells (as of green plants) exposed to light.

Is an autotrophic Protista?

Autotrophic protists--those that, like plants, use photosynthesis to make their own food--are called algae. These include red, brown and green algae, as well as diatoms, dinoflagellates and euglena. Some algae have complex life cycles; plant life is thought to have evolved from green algae.

Why are protists an important part of the global carbon cycle and marine food chains?

A second reason plant-like protists are important is because they form the energy base of most marine and freshwater food chains. ... Since algae can make their own food from sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water, a process called photosynthesis, they are the foundation of aquatic food chains.

What protists are filamentous?

Chytridiomycota (Chytrids): Aquatic protists that form gametes & zoospores. Most are unicellular or filamentous.

How do oceans act as carbon sinks?

The ocean has sucked up about a quarter of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere since we began burning fossil fuels for energy during the Industrial Revolution. Phytoplankton are the main reason the ocean is one of the biggest carbon sinks.

Why are Euglenoids said to photosynthetic and Heterotrophs?

Answer: The Euglena is unique in that it is both heterotrophic (must consume food) and autotrophic (can make its own food). Chloroplasts within the euglena trap sunlight that is used for photosynthesis, and can be seen as several rod like structures throughout the cell.

What is the function of the eyespot?

eyespot, also called stigma, a heavily pigmented region in certain one-celled organisms that apparently functions in light reception. The term is also applied to certain light-sensitive cells in the epidermis (skin) of some invertebrate animals (e.g., worms, starfishes).
