Male sterility is the failure of plants to produce functional anthers, pollen, or male gametes.

What is male sterility types?

Extensive studies suggest that genetic male sterile lines can be broadly classified into three categories; photoperiod genetic male sterile (PGMS), thermosensitive genetic male sterile (TGMS), and photoperiod and thermosensitive genetic male sterile (PTGMS) [15, 24, 25].

Is an example for male sterility?

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), a condition under which a plant is unable to produce functional pollen, is widespread among higher plants. CMS systems represent a valuable tool in the production of hybrid seed in self-pollinating crop species, including maize, rice, cotton, and a number of vegetable crops.

What is male sterility in plants explain?

Plant male sterility refers to the failure in the production of fertile pollen. It occurs spontaneously in natural populations and may be caused by genes encoded in the nuclear (genic male sterility; GMS) or mitochondrial (cytoplasmic male sterility; CMS) genomes.

What is the use of male sterility?

Male sterile plants produce no functional pollen, but do produce viable eggs. Cytoplasmic male sterility is used in agriculture to facilitate the production of hybrid seed. Hybrid seed is produced from a cross between two genetically different lines; such seeds usually result in larger, more vigorous plants.

male sterility and its types

Who invented male sterility?

Joseph Gottlieb Kölreuter was the first to document male sterility in plants. In the 18th century, he reported on anther abortion within species and specific hybrids. Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) has now been identified in over 150 plant species.

What is male sterility in genetics?

Male sterility in plants implies an inability to produce or to release functional pollen, and is the result of failure of formation or development of functional stamens, microspores or gametes.

What is male sterility in maize?

Male-sterile plants are those that fail to produce functional pollen grains. In maize, male sterility can result from either nuclear or mitochondrial gene mutation. The former is referred to as genic male sterility and the latter as cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS).

Which line is male sterile line?

Such a male fertile line is known as maintainer line or 'B' line and male sterile line is also known as 'A' line."

What are the different types of male sterility found in crop plants?

• Phenotypic Male Sterility (Morphological) Structural or Staminal Male Sterility. Pollen Male Sterility. Functional Male Sterility.
• Genotypic Male Sterility. Genetic Male Sterility (GMS) Environmental Sensitive (EGMS) a) Thermo sensitive genetic male sterility (TGMS) ...
• Chemically Induced Male Sterility (CHA)

What causes male sterility?

Male infertility can be caused by low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors may contribute to male infertility.

Which type of male sterility is highly stable?

1. In CGMS system, CMS is highly stable and is not affected by environmental factors. 2. In CGMS system, CMS 'A' line gives only male sterile plants.

What is male sterility and types of male sterility?

Male sterility is defined as the failure of plants to produce functional anthers, pollen, or male gametes. a. 1st documentation: 1763--Kölreuter observed anther abortion within species and species hybrids. ... Easy to detect male sterility, because a large number of pollen for study available.

What is male sterility in hybrid seed production?

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the maternally inherited inability of a plant to produce or shed viable pollen. ... Hybrid seed production involves crossing an inbred, maintained on the CMS cytoplasm, with complementary inbred lines that contain the nuclear fertility restorer gene(s) to produce a fertile hybrid.

How do plants maintain male sterility?

Male-steriles in both models may be maintained by overdominance at the sex-control locus or by having greater ovule or seed fertility than hermaphrodites.

Who certifies seeds in India?

Concerned Authority. As per the provisions under Section 8 of the Seeds Act, 1966, the seed certification will be performed by the Certification Agency.

Is male sterility in crops can be done artificially How?

These male sterility plants were either isolated in natural populations or were artificially induced through mutagenesis (Kaul, 1988). Recently, male sterility systems generated through genetic engineering (Williams et al., 1997) and protoplast fusion (Pelletier et al., 1995) have been also developed.

What genes control infertility in men?

In the mitochondrial genome of Chinsurah Boro II, a chimeric gene called orf79, located downstream of e atp6, which encodes a cytotoxic peptide, was confirmed to be responsible for the gametophytic male sterility of CMS-BT rice by transgenic experiments (Iwabuchi et al., 1993; Akagi et al., 1994; Wang et al., 2006b).

Is hybrid corn sterile?

Hybrid seed corn is produced by crossing a female parent which is male-sterile and therefore incapable of self-pollination with a male parent as the pollen donor. The majority of hybrid seed corn is produced by mechanical detasseling which involves physically removing the tassel, a process that is laborious and costly.

Which male sterility is used in commercial seed production of double cross hybrid maize?

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is caused by mitochondrial genes together with nuclear genes and has been used in commercial hybrid maize production, but this method can suffer from poor genetic diversity, potentially increased disease susceptibility, and unreliable restoration of CMS lines (Williams, 1995).

Which male sterility system is used for production of fodder sorghum genotypes?

Cytoplasmic-nuclear male sterility

CMS has been used extensively to exploit heterosis in hybrid development on a large scale for commercial cultivation since 1960s.

Which is unstable male sterility?

Unstable male sterility increases cost and affects quality of hybrid seed production. Cooler weather during panicle development promotes instability in maize and pigeonpea, high humidity in pearl millet and hot temperature of 42°C and above in sorghum.

How common is male sterility?

Infertility affects one in every six couples who are trying to conceive. In at least half of all cases of infertility, a male factor is a major or contributing cause. This means that about 10% of all males in the United States who are attempting to conceive suffer from infertility.

Can a man be born sterile?

Sometimes male infertility is present from birth, even though parents and the individual won't know it. One of the more common causes of sperm production problems in later life is young infants that are born with their testicles undescended.

Can watery sperm get a woman pregnant?

Can a girl get pregnant with diluted semen? Watery or thick, the semens consistency has no connect with the number of sperm. So,she can certainly get pregnant.Do not use it as an excuse to have unprotected sex, though.
