The first recognisable theory of homology was published by Henri Poincaré in his seminal paper "Analysis situs", J. Ecole polytech. (2) 1. 1–121 (1895).

Who invented homology?

A 19th-century British biologist, Sir Richard Owen, was the first to define both homology and analogy in precise terms.

What is the first homology group?

The fundamental group of a topological space X with base point x0 (also called Poincaré group or first homotopy group), denoted π1(X, x0), is the group of homo- topy classes of loops in X starting and ending at x0, operating under concatenation, where homotopies are assumed to be constant over x0.

What does cohomology mean?

: a part of the theory of topology in which groups are used to study the properties of topological spaces and which is related in a complementary way to homology theory. — called also cohomology theory.

What does cohomology measure?

The cohomology class [ω] measures the failure of existence of a global solution of this equation. Similar remarks can be made about simplicial, singular, and (especially) Čech cohomology.

02 Definition of singular homology

What is meant by algebraic topology?

algebraic topology, Field of mathematics that uses algebraic structures to study transformations of geometric objects. It uses functions (often called maps in this context) to represent continuous transformations (see topology).

What is differential geometry used for?

In structural geology, differential geometry is used to analyze and describe geologic structures. In computer vision, differential geometry is used to analyze shapes. In image processing, differential geometry is used to process and analyse data on non-flat surfaces.

What is a 1 cocycle?

A 1-cocycle is defined in the context of a group , an abelian group , and an action of on by automorphisms, i.e., a homomorphism of groups where is the automorphism group of .

Why is cohomology useful?

There are duality theorems (all kind of variants of Poincaré duality) that make use of cohomology, so even if ultimately you are interested in homology, studying cohomology can be useful. Cohomology natually carries a sort of algebra structure given by the cup product, which is really helpful in a lot of situations.

What is a Cochain?

In mathematics, a chain complex is an algebraic structure that consists of a sequence of abelian groups (or modules) and a sequence of homomorphisms between consecutive groups such that the image of each homomorphism is included in the kernel of the next. ... The homology of a cochain complex is called its cohomology.

What is genetic homology?

In biology, homology is similarity due to shared ancestry between a pair of structures or genes in different taxa. ... Two segments of DNA can have shared ancestry because of either a speciation event (orthologs) or a duplication event (paralogs). Homology among proteins or DNA is inferred from their sequence similarity.

What is a zero dimensional hole?

A 0-dimensional hole is a pair of points in different path components, and so H0 measures path connectedness.

Is homology a functor?

Homology functors

The n-th homology H_n can be viewed as a covariant functor from the category of chain complexes to the category of abelian groups (or modules).

What is the difference between analogy and homology?

In biology, homology is the resemblance of the arrangement, physiology, or growth of various species of organisms. In biology, an analogy is a functional similarity of structure, based on the similarity of use and not upon common evolutionary origins. Due to different structures, they do not have similar functions.

What is the origin of homologous structure?

Homology is a relationship defined between structures or DNA derived from a common ancestor and illustrates descent from a common ancestor. Analogous structures are physically (but not genetically) similar structures that were not present the last common ancestor.

Are bird and bat wings analogous?

Bird and bat wings are analogous — that is, they have separate evolutionary origins, but are superficially similar because they have both experienced natural selection that shaped them to play a key role in flight.

What is a Coboundary?

In a cochain complex (V•,d) a coboundary is an element in the image of the differential. More generally, in the context of the intrinsic cohomology of an (∞,1)-topos H, for X and A two objects, a cocycle on X with coefficients in A is an object in H(X,A) and a coboundary between cocycles is a morphism in there.

What is the purpose of homological algebra?

Homological algebra affords the means to extract information contained in these complexes and present it in the form of homological invariants of rings, modules, topological spaces, and other 'tangible' mathematical objects. A powerful tool for doing this is provided by spectral sequences.

How do you find the cohomology group?

The first cohomology group is the quotient of the so-called crossed homomorphisms, i.e. maps (of sets) f : G → M satisfying f(ab) = f(a) + af(b) for all a, b in G, modulo the so-called principal crossed homomorphisms, i.e. maps f : G → M given by f(a) = am−m for some fixed m ∈ M.

Who invented symplectic geometry?

2. Symplectic geometry as Lagrange did it. The first symplectic manifold was introduced by Lagrange [LAI] in 1808.

Who discovered Euclidean geometry?

Euclidean geometry, the study of plane and solid figures on the basis of axioms and theorems employed by the Greek mathematician Euclid (c. 300 bce). In its rough outline, Euclidean geometry is the plane and solid geometry commonly taught in secondary schools.

Who discovered hyperbolic geometry?

The first published works expounding the existence of hyperbolic and other non-Euclidean geometries are those of a Russian mathematician, Nikolay Ivanovich Lobachevsky, who wrote on the subject in 1829, and, independently, the Hungarian mathematicians Farkas and János Bolyai, father and son, in 1831.

Is algebra an abstract?

In algebra, which is a broad division of mathematics, abstract algebra (occasionally called modern algebra) is the study of algebraic structures. ... Universal algebra is a related subject that studies types of algebraic structures as single objects.

What is number theory?

Definition: Number theory is a branch of pure mathematics devoted to the study of the natural numbers and the integers. It is the study of the set of positive whole numbers which are usually called the set of natural numbers.

Who created linear algebra?

In 1844 Hermann Grassmann published his "Theory of Extension" which included foundational new topics of what is today called linear algebra. In 1848, James Joseph Sylvester introduced the term matrix, which is Latin for womb.
