Use a pure tungsten or zirconiated tungsten electrode when AC welding aluminum. Don't use a 2 percent thoriated tungsten electrode. Make sure you use a tungsten electrode large enough in diameter to carry the welding current you plan to use. Remember that AC welding requires larger–diameter tungsten electrodes.

What color tungsten is for aluminum?

Pure Tungsten (Color Code: Green)

Pure tungsten also provides good arc stability for AC sine wave welding, especially on aluminum and magnesium.

Can you use GREY tungsten on aluminum?

Grey electrodes perform well in DC applications and are great for welding titanium, copper, magnesium, aluminum, and nickel alloys, as well as non-corroding and stainless steels. ...

Is E3 tungsten good for aluminum?

E3 Electrode Features and Benefits:

Universal and suitable for all applications for DC and AC welding pf non-alloyed and high-alloyed steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel, copper, and magnesium alloys.

Do you need to Ball tungsten for aluminum?

To weld aluminum, TIG is usually used. Occasionally, a welder might use MIG for aluminum welding too. Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding requires a non-consumable tungsten electrode. ... A pointed tungsten electrode was traditionally used to strike the arc, but now we know that balled tungsten yields better results.

How to choose the correct Tungsten for TIG Welding

What is Ceriated tungsten used for?

Ceriated, Blue

These types of electrodes are often used for low-current AC but can also be used for DC applications. Because they are intended for low amperages, ceriated tungsten electrodes are ideal for welding thin and intricate parts, in particular, thin sheet metal work.

What is Zirconiated tungsten used for?

Zirconiated tungsten electrodes have welding characteristics that generally fall between those of pure and Thoriated tungsten. Zirconiated tungsten is most commonly used for AC welding because it balls up well in AC welding and has a more stable arc than pure tungsten. It also resists contamination well in AC welding.

What is the Green tungsten?

Pure Tungsten (Green) Electrodes

They are made of 99.95% pure tungsten. Pure Tungsten (Green) Electrodes perform well in AC applications and are great for welding magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy.

Can you DC TIG aluminum?

DC GTAW can work very well on aluminum, so don't be afraid to try it. Just be aware that the technique is different than that used for AC. I recommend that you practice for a while before you decide to use it on actual components.

Which tungsten electrode is usually used to weld aluminum?

The Pure Tungsten electrode is often recommended and used for A.C. welding on aluminum and magnesium. These contain a minimum of 99.5% tungsten, with no alloying elements intentionally added.

Is Red tungsten able to be used on aluminum?

Use a pure tungsten or zirconiated tungsten electrode when AC welding aluminum. Don't use a 2 percent thoriated tungsten electrode. Make sure you use a tungsten electrode large enough in diameter to carry the welding current you plan to use.

Is Lanthanated tungsten radioactive?

You're far less likely to have to deal with contamination in the weld from the electrode mixing metals. Lanthanated Tungsten also has zero radioactive hazard levels, which is a major plus.

What is blue tungsten?

Blue tungsten is a good substitute for thorium oxide. It provides proper arc ignition and is more long-lasting than thoriated electrodes. It can be used for both AC and DC welding with both transformer and inverter power sources.

What is purple tungsten?

The purple tungsten really is a true non-radioactive alternative to the thoriated tungsten electode. Why? The E3 electrode as it is known has many benefits! The electrode tip remains cooler than its thoriated cousin. It possesses superior repeatable ignition characteristics.

What Rod do I use for aluminum TIG welding?

Aluminum Tig Welding Rods

4043 aluminum tig rod - the most versatile for 3003, 6061, a355 aluminum castings etc. and do yourself a favor and get some 4047 aluminum filler rod for castings where porosity rares its ugly head. 4047 filler rod contains 12% silicon. That makes it flow better, with less porosity.

Can a Miller Maxstar 150 STL weld aluminum?

Maxstar 150 STL is a DC welder, meaning it can't weld aluminum effectively. ... This is why you should look for an AC TIG machine for aluminum welding.

Can a DC inverter weld aluminium?

Direct current TIG (DC) welding is when the current flows in one direction only. ... DC is used for TIG welding Mild Steel/Stainless material and AC would be used for welding Aluminium. The TIG welding process has three options of welding current based upon the type of connection.

What size tungsten do I need to weld aluminum?

You often need to consider a 1/8” electrode for welding aluminum in order to get enough heat and to create a stable arc. Too small an electrode will create a sloppy weld. If you're working on AC with a lanthanated electrode, you may be able to use a 3/16” or 3/32” electrode.
