The opponent process theory proposes that one member of the color pair suppresses the other color. For example, we do see yellowish-greens and reddish-yellows, but we never see reddish-green or yellowish-blue color hues. The theory was first proposed by German physiologist Ewald Hering in the late 1800s.

What is the opponent process theory of motivation?

The opponent process theory states that the more a person experiences the fear, the less the fear will affect them. This decrease in fear may continue to the point where the situation is no longer scary. If the stimulus (the thing feared) is no longer a fear, then a second emotion (relief) takes over.

Which phenomena is best explained by the opponent process theory?

Answer:The opponent process theory explains the perceptual phenomena of negative afterimages. Explanation:A theory of color vision (the other theory is Trichromatic Theory). States that sensory receptors arranged in the retina come in pairs: red/green pairs, yellow/blue pairs, and black/white pairs.

When was the opponent process theory?

Opponent-process theory is a psychological and neurological model that accounts for a wide range of behaviors, including color vision. This model was first proposed in 1878 by Ewald Hering, a German physiologist, and later expanded by Richard Solomon, a 20th-century psychologist.

What is Solomon's theory?

Abstract. Solomon (1980) proposed an opponent process theory to account for motivational and affective dynamics. This theory asserts that the brain avoids extremes of emotional experience by countering the stimulation it receives with an opposite or “opponent” reaction.

What is OPPONENT-PROCESS THEORY? What does OPPONENT-PROCESS THEORY mean?

Who gave opponent process theory?

The theory was first proposed by German physiologist Ewald Hering in the late 1800s.

What is the B process?

B-Process, the other part of opponent-process theory, occurs after the initial shock, or emotion and is evoked after a short delay. ... While A-process is still in effect, B-process starts to rise, ultimately leveling out a-process' initial spike in emotion. A-process ends once the stimulus is terminated, leaves, or ends.

Does opponent process theory explain Tetrachromacy?

The opponent-process theory of colour vision or Tetrachromatic theory is a color theory that states that the human visual system interprets information about color by processing signals from cones and rods in an antagonistic manner.

What is the opponent process theory AP Psychology?

The opponent-process theory states that one emotion elicits a feeling of the opposite emotion. While someone may initiate an argument to release his or her anger, this is not consistent with the opponent process theory of emotion.

What is the opponent process theory quizlet?

The Opponent Process Theory states that there are color receptors present in the visual system that respond to the four pairs of colors. ... The Trichromatic Theory states that the retina is compromised of three distinct types of cones or color-sensitive photoreceptors.

Why have psychologists criticized the James Lange Theory?

James-Lange Theory Criticisms

One major criticism of the theory was that neither James nor Lange based their ideas upon anything that remotely resembled controlled experiments. 4 Instead, the theory was largely the result of introspection and correlational research.

Where does opponent processing occur?

The opponent-process theory applies to different levels of the nervous system. Once the neural system passes beyond the retina to the brain, the nature of the cell changes and the cell responds in an opponent fashion.

Which of the following statements best describes trichromatic theory and opponent process theory?

Which of the following statements best describes trichromatic theory and opponent-process theory? Research has not supported either theory. Both theories are equally accurate, but they apply to different levels of the nervous system. The trichromatic theory is more accurate than the opponent-process theory.

How does the opponent process theory explain afterimage?

The opponent process theory explains the perceptual phenomena of negative afterimages. ... Look at the center of the white square for approximately 30 seconds, and then immediately look at a plain sheet of white paper and blink to see the afterimage.

What is trichromatic theory in psychology?

The trichromatic theory (also known as the Young-Helmholtz Trichromatic Theory) is a theory of color and how humans perceive color. ... These color receptors combine the colors to produce the perception of virtually any color.

What are features of the B process?

1)A-process correlates closely with the presence of the emotional event; 2)B-process is low to increase/decrease; 3)With repeated presentations of emotional event, b-process increases in both strength and duration.

What is the trichromatic theory quizlet?

Young-Helmholtz trichromatic theory. the theory that the retina contains three different color receptors—one most sensitive to red, one to green, one to blue—which, when stimulated in combination, can produce the perception of any color.

What is the arousal theory?

The arousal theory of motivation suggests that people are driven to perform actions in order to maintain an optimum level of physiological arousal. ... Other people may do better with much lower arousal levels, so they might feel compelled to seek out soothing and relaxing activities.

What is the retinex theory?

Definition. Retinex is the theory of human color vision proposed by Edwin Land to account for color sensations in real scenes. Color constancy experiments showed that color does not correlate with receptor responses. In real scenes, the content of the entire image controls appearances.

Does trichromatic theory explain afterimages?

According to the trichromatic theory of color vision, shown in Figure 1, all colors in the spectrum can be produced by combining red, green, and blue. An afterimage describes the continuation of a visual sensation after removal of the stimulus.

What are opponent cells?

a type of neuron in the visual system that depolarizes when a particular stimulus (e.g., red light) comes on in the center of the neuron's receptive field and when the “opposite” stimulus (e.g., green light) is extinguished in the surrounding zone of the receptive field.

What is a cone opponent cell?

Cone Opponent Cell. Cell type found in the retina, LGN, and visual cortex that in effect subtracts one type of cone from another. Ex: (L-M), (M-L), etc. Color Space. 3D space established because color perception is based on the outputs of three cone types, that describes the set of all colors.

What is incentive theory?

The incentive theory is one of the major theories of motivation and suggests that behavior is motivated by a desire for reinforcement or incentives.

What is operant process theory of emotion?

Richard L. Solomon's opponent process theory of emotions—also commonly referred to as the opponent process theory of acquired motivation—contends that the primary or initial reaction to an emotional event (State A) will be followed by an opposite secondary emotional state (State B).

What is incentive sensitization theory?

The incentive-sensitization theory posits the essence of drug addiction to be excessive amplification specifically of psychological 'wanting', especially triggered by cues, without necessarily an amplification of 'liking'.
