R-selected species are those that produce many offspring that have a lower probability of surviving to adulthood. Typical examples of these species include mice and rabbits, and all species of Texas quail fall within this classification.

What are r-selected species?

r-selected species, also called r-strategist, species whose populations are governed by their biotic potential (maximum reproductive capacity, r). ... The production of numerous small offspring followed by exponential population growth is the defining characteristic of r-selected species.

What are examples of r-selected species?

Examples of r-selected species are marine invertebrates, such as jellyfish, and plants, such as the dandelion. Dandelions have small seeds that are dispersed long distances by wind; many seeds are produced simultaneously to ensure that at least some of them reach a hospitable environment.

Which of the following applies to r-selected species?

r-selected species tend to be small, have many offspring, expend or invest minimal energy for each offspring, mature early, have short life spans, and may reproduce only once in their lifetime.

Which of the following are r-selected traits?

• Rapid development.
• High reproductive rate.
• Early reproductive age.
• Small body size.
• One reproductive cycle.
• Short lifespan.
• Poor competitive ability.
• High mortality of offspring.

Difference between r-selected and k-selected species

What are r-selected species quizlet?

r-Selected Species. Little to no parental care and protection of offspring. r-Selected Species. Early reproductive age.

What is R and K-selected species?

r-selected babies grow rapidly, and tend to be found in less competitive, low quality environments. ... K-selected species produce offspring that each have a higher probability of survival to maturity.

What are R species?

r-selected species are those that emphasize high growth rates, typically exploit less-crowded ecological niches, and produce many offspring, each of which has a relatively low probability of surviving to adulthood (i.e., high r, low K). A typical r species is the dandelion (genus Taraxacum).

Are dogs r-selected species?

Examples of r-strategist species are dogs, cats, insects, and fish.

Are Snakes r-selected species?

Members of squamate (large lizards and snakes) and Cricetidae (a rodent family) tend to fall more towards the r-selected side of the scale, therefore, the number of offspring plays a large role in the population size. It is also important to note that evolution is what caused species to be r-selected or K-selected.

Are crabs r-selected?

Blue crab is considered an “r-selected species, ” displaying high fecundity, rapid growth, early age-at-maturation, short life spans, and high natural mortality rates.

Which organism best represents an r-selected species?

R-selected organisms, those emphasizing a fast growth rate, high number of offspring, include rabbits, bacteria, salmon, plants such as weeds and grasses, etc.

Are elephants K or r-selected?

Elephants, humans, and bison are all k-selected species. On the other hand, r-selected species often inhabit unstable environments and are completely density independent. These species often have short life expectancies, produce as many offspring as they can, and invest very low amounts of parental care.

Are pioneer species R or K selected?

This indicates that pioneer terrestrial gastropods generally cannot be regarded as r-selected. Pioneer species may possess any of several life history strategies, and the combinations of traits shown by them may have little in common with the r-K selection concept.

Are Dolphins r-selected species?

R-selected or opportunistic species are species that have high growth rates, produce many offspring, and have low survival odds for those many offspring. ... Examples of k-selected species include mammals such as humans, dolphins, and rhinos.

Are sea turtles R or K selected?

r/K selection as a continuous spectrum

Similarly, reptiles such as sea turtles display both r- and K-traits: although large organisms with long lifespans (should they reach adulthood), they produce large numbers of unnurtured offspring.

Are cats r-selected species?

Cats and dogs are r-selected compared to humans, but K-selected compared to mice and rats. Mice and rats, in turn, are K-selected compared to most insects. We can think of an r-K selection continuum and an organism's position along it in a particular environment at a given instant in time (Pianka 1970).

Are birds r-selected species?

Wilson; r-selected species—that is, species whose populations are governed by their biotic potential (maximum reproductive capacity)—make up the second strategy. ... Examples of K-selected species include birds, larger mammals (such as elephants, horses, and primates), and larger plants.

Are deer K-selected or r-selected?

Typically, they are small, have short life expectancies, produce large numbers of offspring and provide little parental care. They tend to show boom or bust population responses. White-tailed deer are a K- selected species and most insects are r-selected species.

Is a whooping crane an R or K selected species?

Not much is known about the learning that takes place in this K-selected species over the almost one year that the young whooping crane colt remains with its adult parents.

Why are invasive species r-selected?

Biologists characterize most invasive species as r-selected. ... R-selected species often grow quickly and mature rapidly. Combined with their explosive reproductive potential, their quick growth and maturation allow them to colonize disturbed and early successional habitats remarkably well.

What are K selected and r-selected species quizlet?

1 Know that species with high reproductive effort, short life, and many offspring are more common in early succession or disturbed communities (r-selected). ... 2 Know that species with low reproductive effort, long life, and few offspring are more common in stable communities (K-selected).

How do r-selected species differ from K selected species?

The r selected species live in populations that are highly variable. The fittest individuals in these environments have many offspring and reproduce early. K selected species live in populations that are at or near equilibrium conditions for long periods of time.

What is the R vs K selection theory quizlet?

K selection has a low number of offspring and a long life span; R selection has a higher number of offspring and short life span.

Is a coyote AK selected species?

While still considered a K- selected species, coyotes are further along the continuum toward r-selected species than the giant panda because of a higher number of offspring and a shorter weaning period. Coyotes mate for life, and a female will usually bear a litter of 2 – 12 pups in the spring months.
