The cell closest to the chalaza becomes the functional megaspore (FM). The three non-functional megaspores (dm) degenerate shortly after meiosis.

Which end megaspore remains functional?

Reason: In monosporic (Polygonum) type of embryo sac development, usually the megaspore which is situated towards micropylar end remains functional.

How many megaspores are functional?

The megaspore mother cell undergoes meiosis and forms four megaspores. Three of the megaspores undergo cell death. The chalazal-most megaspore survives, becomes the functional megaspore, and undergoes megagametogenesis.

Which megaspore is functional in angiosperm?

Only the functional megaspore (n) develops into the female gametophyte. This process of embryo sac formation from a single megaspore is termed as Monosporic development. - Polygonum type of embryo sac is found in 80% of flowering plants.

Which megaspore is functional chalazal or micropylar?

Functional megaspore represents the first cell of the female gametophyte. Mostly chalazal and grows along the micropylar- chalazal axis. The nucleus undergoes three mitotic divisions and form eight nuclei.

In maority of the angiosperm, the ……..megaspore is functional.

Which is the functional megaspore in linear Tetrad?

Question : In angiosperms the functional megaspore in the linear tetrad is generally. Fourth from micropylar.

What is free nuclear division of functional megaspore?

Thus, the correct answer is 'Endosperm formation.

What is megaspore in angiosperms?

Megaspores, also called macrospores, are a type of spore that is present in heterosporous plants. ... Generally speaking, the megaspore, or large spore, germinates into a female gametophyte, which produces egg cells. These are fertilized by sperm produced by the male gametophyte developing from the microspore.

What is the ploidy of functional megaspore?

So, it's ploidy is 2n. Functional megaspore is formed after MMC undergoes several meiotic divisions. It forms megaspore tetrad out of 4 megaspore tetrad 3 of them degenerate and only one remains functional which is called functional megaspore.

What does an ovule contain?

Ovules are immature seeds, consisting of a stalk, the funiculus, a megasporangium (also called the nucellus), from which develops the megasporocyte and female gametophyte, plus one or two surrounding integuments.

Is megaspore diploid or haploid?

A megaspore mother cell, or megasporocyte, is a diploid cell in plants in which meiosis will occur, resulting in the production of four haploid megaspores.

How many megaspore remain functional in allium?

Out of four megaspores, only one which remains towards the chalazal end behaves as functional megaspore and the other three which remain towards the micropylar end, gradually degenerate (Fig.

How is functional megaspore formed?

Megasporogenesis refers to the development of megaspores from the megasporocyte, the cell that undergoes meiosis. Meiosis of the megasporocyte nucleus results in the formation of four haploid megaspore nuclei. In most taxa, meiosis is followed by cytokinesis, resulting in four megaspore cells.

What is megaspore Tetrad?

Megaspores are the large spores which germinate into female gametophyte also known as female spores and produce egg cells. ... The megaspores are formed as a result of meiosis of megasporocyte nucleus. This results in four haploid megaspores.

How many divisions occur in functional megaspore?

The functional megaspore (haploid) represents the first cell of the female gametophyte. Its nucleus undergoes three mitotic divisions to form eight nuclei.

Does megaspore in most of the flowering plants remain functional comment?

In most flowering plants, only one megaspore survives per ovule, typically this is the most proximal megaspore, while the remaining three undergo programmed cell death (Fig. 13.2A). The surviving megaspore is called the Functional Megaspore (FM) and it gives rise to the embryo sac after mitotic divisions (see below).

What is the priority of functional megaspore?

Similarly, the functional megaspore is haploid in nature. So, the correct option is '2n,2n,n,n'.

What is the ploidy of ovule?

The nucellus is the central part of the ovule containing the embryo sac and is diploid, and megaspore mother cell is the one which is going to form 4 haploid megaspores by meiosis so again being a parent cell their ploidy is 2n.

What will be the ploidy of functional megaspore and female gametophyte?

Nucellus , microspore mother cells (MMC), and megaspore mother cells are part of sporophyte so these are diploid cells and their ploidy is 2n while female gametophytes are part of gametophyte and ploidy is n .

What is Microspore and megaspore?

Microspores are spores that are specifically male and give rise to male gametophytes; megaspores, on the other hand, are specifically female and give rise to female gametophytes.

Is ovule a megaspore?

The ovule appears to be a megasporangium with integuments surrounding it. Ovules are initially composed of diploid maternal tissue, which includes a megasporocyte (a cell that will undergo meiosis to produce megaspores).

How many megaspore remain functional in each ovule of the Spermatophytes?

In most flowering plants, only one megaspore survives per ovule, typically this is the most proximal megaspore, while the remaining three undergo programmed cell death (Fig. 13.2A). The surviving megaspore is called the Functional Megaspore (FM) and it gives rise to the embryo sac after mitotic divisions (see below).

Why is mitotic division called as free nuclear division in a functional megaspore nucleus?

Human Reproduction

The nucleus of the functional megaspore mother cell divides mitotically to form two nuclei which move to the opposite poles, forming the 2-nucleate embryo sac. ... These mitotic divisions are strictly free nuclear in nature, that is, nuclear divisions are not followed immediately by cell wall formation.

What are free nuclear divisions?

The free nuclear division is the division of Karyokinesis that means mitotic cell division and the division of cytoplasm does not occur. It is produced as a multinucleated condition that is termed as syncytium.

How many free nuclear divisions does the nucleus of a functional megaspore undergo to Form 8 nucleated embryo sac?

The functional megaspore is the first cell of female gametophyte. The cell enlarges and undergoes three free nuclear mitotic divisions. The first division produces two nucleate embryo sac. The two nuclei shift to the two ends and divide twice forming four nucleate and then eight nucleate structure.
