The bones, muscles, tendons, and other tissues that reach from the base of the skull to the tailbone. The spinal column encloses the spinal cord and the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. Also called backbone, spine, and vertebral column.

What part of the body is the spinal column?

The spinal cord is an extension of the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord begins at the bottom of the brain stem (at the area called the medulla oblongata) and ends in the lower back, as it tapers to form a cone called the conus medullaris.

What is the order of the spinal column?

The vertebrae are divided into three regions: cervical C1–C7 vertebrae, thoracic T1–T12 vertebrae, and lumbar L1–L5 vertebrae. The vertebral column is curved, with two primary curvatures (thoracic and sacrococcygeal curves) and two secondary curvatures (cervical and lumbar curves).

What are the three parts of the spinal column?

The spine has three normal curves: cervical, thoracic and lumbar. There are seven cervical vertebrae in the neck, 12 thoracic vertebrae in the torso and five lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.

What is the spinal column and what does it do?

The spinal column is made up of 33 bones (called vertebrae) stacked on top of one another. It provides the base support for your entire body and allows you to stand, bend, and twist without causing harm to the spinal cord.

VERTEBRAL COLUMN ANATOMY (1/2)

How many spinal columns are there?

In humans, the vertebral column usually consists of 33 vertebrae, placed in series and connected by ligaments and intervertebral discs. However, the number of vertebrae can vary between 32 and 35. Usually there are 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral and 4 caudal (coccygeal) vertebrae.

What is spinal column in science?

: the axial skeleton of a vertebrate that consists of an articulated series of vertebrae which extend from the neck to the tail and protect the spinal cord. — called also backbone, vertebral column.

What are the 5 parts of the vertebral column?

The spine is composed of 33 bones, called vertebrae, divided into five sections: the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine sections, and the sacrum and coccyx bones. The cervical section of the spine is made up of the top seven vertebrae in the spine, C1 to C7, and is connected to the base of the skull.

What are the 5 spinal regions?

The vertebrae are numbered and divided into regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx (Fig.

What are the 5 lumbar vertebrae?

Position of human lumbar vertebrae (shown in red). It consists of 5 bones, from the top down, L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5. The lumbar vertebrae are, in human anatomy, the five vertebrae between the rib cage and the pelvis.

Where is the vertebral column located?

The bones, muscles, tendons, and other tissues that reach from the base of the skull to the tailbone. The vertebral column encloses the spinal cord and the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. Also called backbone, spinal column, and spine.

Which of the following sections of the spinal column?

As mentioned above, our vertebrae are numbered and divided into five regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx.

Is vertebral column and spinal cord same?

The vertebral column surrounds the spinal cord which travels within the spinal canal, formed from a central hole within each vertebra. The spinal cord is part of the central nervous system that supplies nerves and receives information from the peripheral nervous system within the body.

What type of tissue is the spinal column made up of?

The spinal cord (in yellow) connects the brain to nerves throughout the body. The spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular structure made up of nervous tissue, which extends from the medulla oblongata in the brainstem to the lumbar region of the vertebral column.

Where does the spinal column end?

The spinal cord ends at the intervertebral disc between the first and second lumbar vertebrae as a tapered structure called the conus medullaris, consisting of sacral spinal cord segments.

Which part of the spine protects the brain stem and the spinal cord?

The brain and spinal cord are protected by bony structures — the skull and spinal column. Meninges are membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord.

What are 3 functions of the vertebral column?

• Protect the spinal cord, nerve roots and several of the body's internal organs.
• Provide structural support and balance to maintain an upright posture.
• Enable flexible motion.

What are the four acting forces on the spinal column?

These movements result in various forces acting on the lumbar spine and sacrum: compressive force, tensile force, shear force, bending moment and torsional moment.

What are the 3 regions of the spine?

The normal anatomy of the spine is usually described by dividing up the spine into three major sections: the cervical, the thoracic, and the lumbar spine. (Below the lumbar spine is a bone called the sacrum, which is part of the pelvis). Each section is made up of individual bones, called vertebrae.

What is spiral cord?

The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves and cells that extends from the lower portion of the brain to the lower back. It carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body. This article covers the key anatomy of the spinal cord and its functions. It also provides some information about spinal cord injuries.

What is Atlas vertebra?

Atlas The atlas is the first cervical vertebra and articulates with the occiput of the head and the axis (C2). Has no vertebral body and no spinous process. Has lateral masses which are connected by an anterior and posterior arch.

What are the 4 main functions of the spine?

• Protect the spinal cord, nerve roots and several of the body's internal organs.
• Provide structural support and balance to maintain an upright posture.
• Enable flexible motion.

What is the medical name for spinal column?

Five vertebrae are fused together to form the sacrum and 4 vertebrae are fused together to form the coccyx. The spine is also referred to as the vertebral column, spinal column, or backbone.

Why spinal column is important for human movement?

It allows you to move about freely and to bend with flexibility. The spine is also designed to protect your spinal cord. The spinal cord is a column of nerves that connects your brain with the rest of your body, allowing you to control your movements.

What does vertebral mean?

1 : of, relating to, or being vertebrae or the spinal column : spinal. 2 : composed of or having vertebrae. vertebral. noun.
