Definition: Idiopathic osteoporosis refers to the development of osteopenia and fractures with minimal or no trauma in otherwise young, healthy individuals who are not postmenopausal or have other, identifiable secondary causes of osteoporosis.

What is idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis?

Idiopathic Juvenile Osteoporosis is a sporadic disease of children manifesting between the 2nd and 14th years of life with pain in bones, fractures and deformity of the axial and appendicular as a part of clinical evaluation skeleton after minimal traumas.

What are the types of osteoporosis?

Two categories of osteoporosis have been identified: primary and secondary. Primary osteoporosis is the most common form of the disease and includes postmenopausal osteoporosis (type I), and senile osteoporosis (type II). Secondary osteoporosis is characterized as having a clearly definable etiologic mechanism.

What are 3 common causes of osteoporosis?

• Estrogen Deficiencies in Women. Women typically suffer estrogen deficiencies during perimenopause and menopause. ...
• Calcium Deficiencies. Bones are constantly losing and replacing minerals. ...
• Inactive Lifestyle.

What is the most common cause of osteoporosis?

Dietary factors

Osteoporosis is more likely to occur in people who have: Low calcium intake. A lifelong lack of calcium plays a role in the development of osteoporosis. Low calcium intake contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures.

What are the two medications that may cause osteoporosis after long term use?

The medications most commonly associated with osteoporosis include phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, and primidone. These antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are all potent inducers of CYP-450 isoenzymes.

Which gland is responsible for osteoporosis?

Parathyroid and Thyroid problems: Hyperparathyroidism, which is caused by too much parathyroid hormone, can cause osteoporosis because the excess hormone extracts calcium from your bones. On that same note, hyperthyroidism, or an overproduction of thyroid hormone, may also lead to bone loss.

Which of the following Hyposecretion of hormone causes osteoporosis?

[Role of cortisol hypersecretion in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis]

What causes osteoporosis in females?

Osteoporosis is caused by bone loss. Most often, the reason for bone loss is very low levels of the hormone estrogen. Estrogen plays an important role in building and maintaining your bones. The most common cause of low estrogen levels is menopause.

What medication is used to treat osteoporosis?

• Alendronate (Fosamax), a weekly pill.
• Risedronate (Actonel), a weekly or monthly pill.
• Ibandronate (Boniva), a monthly pill or quarterly intravenous (IV) infusion.
• Zoledronic acid (Reclast), an annual IV infusion.

What is Type 1 and Type 2 osteoporosis?

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (type 1) occurs in women within 15–20 years after menopause and is thought to result from factors related to or exacerbated by estrogen deficiency. Age-related osteoporosis (type 2) occurs in men and women over 75 years of age and may be more directly related to the aging process.

What is Type 2 osteoporosis?

Type II osteoporosis (also known as senile), commonly caused by a long term calcium deficiency. Women are twice as more likely than men to suffer from Type II osteoporosis. Type II osteoporosis results in loss of the outer bone structure and also the inner trabecular bone to wear down and become thin.

What are the grades of osteoporosis?

The result is your T score. A T score of -1 to +1 is considered normal bone density. A T score of -1 to -2.5 indicates osteopenia (low bone density). A T score of -2.5 or lower is bone density low enough to be categorized as osteoporosis.

What is Osteo Malaysia?

Osteomalacia means "soft bones." Osteomalacia is a disease that weakens bones and can cause them to break more easily. It is a disorder of decreased mineralization, which results in bone breaking down faster than it can re-form. It is a condition that occurs in adults.

Can a 17 year old have osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens your bones, making fractures more likely. It's most common later in life, especially in women after menopause. But it's possible for children and teens to develop juvenile osteoporosis. This most often happens in children between ages 8 and 14.

What is primary osteoporosis?

Primary osteoporosis, as defined by bone loss associated with significant fracture, is most commonly caused in children by one or other of the forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). These are a group of disorders that are characterised by abnormalities in type I collagen synthesis or processing.

What organs are affected by osteoporosis?

Osteoporotic bone breaks are most likely to occur in the hip, spine or wrist, but other bones can break too. In addition to causing permanent pain, osteoporosis causes some patients to lose height. When osteoporosis affects vertebrae, or the bones of the spine, it often leads to a stooped or hunched posture.

What are the warning signs of osteoporosis?

• A stooped posture and even a loss of height over time.
• Back pain that could be caused by a collapsed or fractured vertebra in your back.
• A bone that breaks more easily than expected.

What does Stage 4 osteoporosis mean?

The fourth stage of osteopenia and osteoporosis

Without any intervention, osteoporosis can progress to stage four. During this stage the effects of significant bone loss become visible. Softening of the bones and accumulated fragility fractures, especially in the spine, results in deformity.

Which thyroid hormone is used to treat osteoporosis?

Calcitonin is a hormone naturally produced in the thyroid. When given to patients with osteoporosis, calcitonin produces modest increases in bone mass because it slows the rate at which osteoclasts absorb bone.

How does estrogen affect osteoporosis?

Women tend to have smaller, thinner bones than men. Estrogen, a hormone in women that protects bones, decreases sharply when women reach menopause, which can cause bone loss. This is why the chance of developing osteoporosis increases as women reach menopause.

What are the two main hormones involved in maintaining bone density?

Three calcium-regulating hormones play an important role in producing healthy bone: 1) parathyroid hormone or PTH, which maintains the level of calcium and stimulates both resorption and formation of bone; 2) calcitriol, the hormone derived from vitamin D, which stimulates the intestines to absorb enough calcium and ...

What is calcitonin do?

Calcitonin is involved in helping to regulate levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood, opposing the action of parathyroid hormone. This means that it acts to reduce calcium levels in the blood.

Why do endocrinologists treat osteoporosis?

What is responsible for bone resorption?

Osteoclast cells cause bone resorption and originate from a hematopoietic lineage, which includes various blood cell types from within the bone marrow. The cellular process of the remodeling begins when osteoblast and osteoclast precursor cells fuse to form a multinucleated, osteoclastic cell.
