The ionosphere (/aɪˈɒnəˌsfɪər/) is the ionized part of Earth's upper atmosphere, from about 48 km (30 mi) to 965 km (600 mi) altitude, a region that includes the thermosphere and parts of the mesosphere and exosphere. The ionosphere is ionized by solar radiation.

What is ionosphere also called?

It has practical importance because, among other functions, it influences radio propagation to distant places on the Earth. It is also called as thermosphere.

Is thermosphere also called ionosphere?

This layer is composed of electrically charged ions that are responsible for reflecting the radio waves back to the Earth's surface. Due to the presence of these ions, thermosphere is also known as ionosphere.

Which layer is the ionosphere?

Located within the thermosphere, the ionosphere is made of electrically charged gas particles (ionized). The ionosphere extends from 37 to 190 miles (60-300 km) above the earth's surface. It is divided into three regions or layers; the F-Region, E-Layer and D-Layer.

What is ionosphere mean?

: the part of the earth's atmosphere in which ionization of atmospheric gases affects the propagation of radio waves, which extends from about 30 miles (50 kilometers) to the exosphere, and which is contiguous with the upper portion of the mesosphere and the thermosphere also : a comparable region of charged particles ...

Welcome to the Ionosphere

Why ionosphere is so called?

The ionosphere is a very active part of the atmosphere, and it grows and shrinks depending on the energy it absorbs from the Sun. The name ionosphere comes from the fact that gases in these layers are excited by solar radiation to form ions, which have an electrical charge.

What is in the ionosphere?

The ionosphere is a shell of electrons and electrically charged atoms and molecules that surrounds the Earth, stretching from a height of about 50 km (30 mi) to more than 1,000 km (600 mi). It exists primarily due to ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

Is the ionosphere in the stratosphere?

The ionosphere is the part of the atmosphere that is ionized by solar radiation. The atmosphere above 10 km is called the stratosphere, followed by the mesosphere. ... It is in the stratosphere that incoming solar radiation creates the ozone layer.

What is troposphere stratosphere mesosphere thermosphere exosphere?

The atmosphere can be divided into layers based on its temperature, as shown in the figure below. These layers are the troposphere, the stratosphere, the mesosphere and the thermosphere. A further region, beginning about 500 km above the Earth's surface, is called the exosphere.

What is the best layer of ionosphere?

The F region is at the highest region in the ionosphere and as such it experiences the most solar radiation. Much of the ionisation results from ultra-violet light in the middle of the spectrum as well as those portions of the spectrum with very short wavelengths.

What is a circulation pattern?

[‚sər·kyə·′lā·shən ‚pad·ərn] (meteorology) The general geometric configuration of atmospheric circulation usually applied, in synoptic meteorology, to the large-scale features of synoptic charts and mean charts.

What is Aurora in thermosphere?

The aurora (Northern Lights and Southern Lights) mostly occur in the thermosphere. The thermosphere is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. ... It extends from about 90 km (56 miles) to between 500 and 1,000 km (311 to 621 miles) above our planet.

Why thermosphere is also known as Iron a sphere?

The Earth's thermosphere also includes the region of the atmosphere called the ionosphere. ... The high temperatures in the thermosphere can cause molecules to ionize. This is why an ionosphere and thermosphere can overlap.

What are the ionosphere and exosphere?

Ionosphere: is the lower layer of the thermosphere. This is where earth's communication is located along with the aurora borealis. Exosphere: is the upper layer of the thermosphere. Satellites are found in this layer.

What is the name of the uppermost layer?

The three layers of the earth are as follows: Crust : The uppermost layer over the earth's surface is called the crust. Mantle : Just beneath the crust is the mantle which extends up to a depth of 2900 km. below the crust.

What is the difference between troposphere and ionosphere?

is that troposphere is the lower levels of the atmosphere extending from the earth's surface up to the tropopause it is characterized by convective air movements and a large vertical temperature change while ionosphere is the part of the earth's atmosphere beginning at an altitude of about 50 kilometers (31 miles) and ...

What is the lowest layer of the ionosphere?

The D region is the lowest, starting about 60 or 70 km (37 or 43 miles) above the ground and extending upward to about 90 km (56 miles). Next higher is the E region, starting at about 90 or 100 km (56 or 62 miles) up and extending to 120 or 150 km (75 or 93 miles).

Which is the hottest layer of the atmosphere?

The thermosphere is often considered the "hot layer" because it contains the warmest temperatures in the atmosphere.

Where is ionosphere located?

The ionosphere is where Earth's atmosphere meets space

The ionosphere stretches roughly 50 to 400 miles above Earth's surface, right at the edge of space. Along with the neutral upper atmosphere, the ionosphere forms the boundary between Earth's lower atmosphere — where we live and breathe — and the vacuum of space.

Who discovered the ionosphere?

The discovery of the ionosphere goes back to the first suggestion made by the physicit Carl F. Gauss in 1839 that speculed that the dialy variation of the geomagnetic field might have its origin in atmospheric electric currents. In 1860, Lord Kelvin suggested the existence of a conducting layer.

What does the tropopause do?

The tropopause minimum acts as a barrier^ between the troposphere and stratosphere because mixing and heat transport by convection can only occur when temperature decreases with height. The troposphere - with convection allowed - is turbulent and well mixed.

What is the ionosphere and magnetosphere?

Ionosphere and magnetosphere, regions of Earth's atmosphere in which the number of electrically charged particles—ions and electrons—are large enough to affect the propagation of radio waves.

Is the geosphere?

The geosphere is the earth itself: the rocks, minerals, and landforms of the surface and interior. Below the crust - which varies in depth from about 5 km beneath the ocean floor to up to 70 km below the land surface, temperatures are high enough for deformation and a paste-like flow of elements.

Are auroras in the ionosphere?

Aurora borealis occur in the Earth's ionosphere, and result from collisions between energetic electrons (sometimes also protons, and even heavier charged particles) and atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere.
