Group 1A — The Alkali Metals. Group 1A (or IA) of the periodic table are the alkali metals: hydrogen (H), lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). These are (except for hydrogen) soft, shiny, low-melting, highly reactive metals, which tarnish when exposed to air.

What is Group 7 on the periodic table called?

Group 7A (or VIIA) of the periodic table are the halogens: fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), and astatine (At).

What is cesium classified?

Cesium is a chemical element with symbol Cs and atomic number 55. Classified as an alkali metal, Cesium is a solid at room temperature.

Is Cesium a solid?

Of all elements that are solid at room temperature, caesium is the softest: it has a hardness of 0.2 Mohs. ... It has a melting point of 28.5 °C (83.3 °F), making it one of the few elemental metals that are liquid near room temperature.

How many groups are in the modern periodic table?

Groups are numbered from 1 to 18. From left to right in the periodic table, there are two groups (1 and 2) of elements in the s-block, or hydrogen block, of the periodic table; ten groups (3 through 12) in the d-block, or transition block; and six groups (13 through 18) in the p-block, or main block.

Cesium - The most ACTIVE metal on EARTH!

What is group 8 called in the periodic table?

Group 8A (or VIIIA) of the periodic table are the noble gases or inert gases: helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), and radon (Rn).

What is group 1 called?

Group 1A — The Alkali Metals. Group 1A (or IA) of the periodic table are the alkali metals: hydrogen (H), lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr).

What called group 0?

The elements in group 0 are called the noble gases . They exist as single atoms .

What element has a symbol of RN?

radon (Rn), chemical element, a heavy radioactive gas of Group 18 (noble gases) of the periodic table, generated by the radioactive decay of radium. (Radon was originally called radium emanation.)

Why is it not called Group 8?

About the Noble Gases

Group 0 used to be called Group 8 but this caused confusion because most elements in Group 8 have 8 electrons in their Outer Shell but Helium only has 2, so it was renamed Group 0. ... The Noble Gases are all monatomic which means they exist only as single atoms and do not join to form any molecules.

What is the reactivity in Group 7?

The non-metal elements in Group 7 - known as the halogens - get less reactive as you go down the group. This is the opposite trend to that seen in the alkali metals in Group 1 of the periodic table . Fluorine is the most reactive element of all in Group 7.

What is group 2 called?

Group 2A (or IIA) of the periodic table are the alkaline earth metals: beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and radium (Ra). ... In most cases, the alkaline earth metals are ionized to form a 2+ charge.

What is Group 17 called?

halogen, any of the six nonmetallic elements that constitute Group 17 (Group VIIa) of the periodic table. The halogen elements are fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), astatine (At), and tennessine (Ts).

Why is Group 7 called halogens?

Group 7 elements form salts when they react with metals. The term 'halogen' means 'salt former', which is why Group 7 elements are called halogens. In general the halogens comprise the most reactive group of non-metals. The halogens are so reactive that they cannot exist free in nature.

What is Group 12 on the periodic table called?

zinc group element, any of the four chemical elements that constitute Group 12 (IIb) of the periodic table—namely, zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and copernicium (Cn).

What is Group 10 on the periodic table called?

Group 10, numbered by current IUPAC style, is the group of chemical elements in the periodic table that consists of nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and perhaps also the chemically uncharacterized darmstadtium (Ds). All are d-block transition metals.

What is group A and B in periodic table?

The elements in group IA are called the alkali metals. ... The columns with B (IB through VIIIB) are called the transition elements. The columns with A (IA through VIIIA) are called the main group elements. The elements can also be divided into two main groups, the metals and the non-metals.

Which group added in Mendeleev periodic table?

Which elements were added to the mendeleev's periodic table later and what was the group number? Noble gases were, discovered later to the proposed Mendeleev's periodic table.

What is group 5 on the periodic table called?

Group 5A (or VA) of the periodic table are the pnictogens: the nonmetals nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), the metalloids arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb), and the metal bismuth (Bi).

Which of the following belongs to Group 18?

group 18 elements are noble or inert gases. Helium(He), Neon(Ne), Argon(Ar), Krypton(Kr), Xenon(Xe), and Radon(Rn).

Who named radon?

Radon was discovered by Friedrich Ernst Dorn, a German chemist, in 1900 while studying radium's decay chain. Originally named niton after the Latin word for shining, “nitens,” it has been known as radon since 1923.
