Flatworm - Wikipedia

. Protonephridia likely first arose as a way to cope with a hypotonic environment by removing excess water from the organism (osmoregulation). Their use as excretory and ionoregulatory structures likely arose secondarily.

What animals contain Protonephridia?

The simpler, more primitive protonephridia, found in flatworms, ribbon worms, and rotifers, are usually scattered among the other body cells. More advanced, segmented invertebrates, such as earthworms, possess the more complex metanephridia, usually arranged in pairs.

Which annelid has Protonephridia?

Certain meiofaunal annelids , especially myzostomids and certain phyllodo- cidan annelids , including all species of the Phyllodocidae, Nephthyidae, Glyceridae, and Gonadiidae, possess segmental protonephridia instead of segmental metane- phridia . ...

Does Planaria have Protonephridia?

The planarian excretory system is made up of protonephridia, which are branched organs that are widely distributed throughout the body.

Do sponges have Protonephridia?

This is possible because like sponges, the vast majority of their cells are in contact with the environment. ... They have what are termed “flame cells” (or “protonephridia”) located all along two highly-branched tubules that run the length of the body.

What is Protonephridia?

A protonephridium (proto = "first") is a network of dead-end tubules lacking internal openings, found in the phyla Platyhelminthes, Nemertea, Rotifera and Chordata (lancelets). ... Protonephridia are generally found in basal organisms such as flatworms.

Which of the following animals uses Protonephridia or flame cells for excretion?

planaria ,cephalochordates ,rotifers.

What kidney is found in the platyhelminthes?

A flame cell is a specialized excretory cell found in the simplest freshwater invertebrates, including flatworms, rotifers and nemerteans; these are the simplest animals to have a dedicated excretory system. Flame cells function like a kidney, removing waste materials. Bundles of flame cells are called protonephridia.

Does Hydra have excretory system?

(3) Coelenterates : Hydra also lacks special excretory organs. The nitrogenous waste products like ammonia are removed through the general surface of the body by diffusion. Some nitrogenous waste products are also thrown along with indigestible matter through the mouth.

Who named platyhelminthes?

Platyhelminthes (pla-te-hel-MIN-thes) is made of two Greek roots that mean "flat worms" [flat -plato (πλάτω); and worm -helmis (ελμισ)]. The reference is to the flattened nature of the animals in this phylum. The name was coined by Gegenbaur (1859).

Where are Protonephridia found?

Protonephridia are present in Platyhelminthes and metanephridia in Annelids and Arthropoda. - It refers to the tubular, excretory structures in specific invertebrates, generally closing internally in the flame cells and possessing an external pore.

Do rotifers have Protonephridia?

Protonephridia or flame cells or solenocytes are the excretory structures in Platyhelminthes/flatworms, Rotifers, some annelids and Cephalochordate(Branchiostoma).

What tubular system is mainly found in the Protonephridia?

Their excretory system consists of two tubules connected to a highly branched duct system. The cells in the tubules are called flame cells (or protonephridia) because they have a cluster of cilia that looks like a flickering flame when viewed under the microscope, as illustrated in Figure 22.10a.

Do nematodes have Protonephridia?

Correlated with their lack of cilia, nematodes do not have protonephridia; their excretory system consists of one or more large gland cells opening by an excretory pore, or a canal system without gland cells, or both cells and canals together.

Are human kidneys 1 million Nephridia?

Deoxygenated blood is poured into right atrium of heart. The excretory units of flatworms are flame cells. Human kidney has about 1 million nephridia. Tracheids and vessels are non -living conducting tissues.

Does Hydra have blood?

Animals such as sponges and Hydra do not posses any circulatory system. The water in which they live brings food and oxygen as it enters their bodies. The water carries away waste materials and carbon dioxide as it moves out. Thus, these animals do not need a circulatory fluid like the blood.

What is the excretory organ in cockroach?

Malpighian tubules are the excretory system of cockroaches.

What is excretory organ in Platyhelminthes?

The excretory organs of flatworms (Platyhelminthes) are flame cells and function like a kidney, removing waste materials. Nephridia remove metabolic wastes from an animal's body. They are present in annelids.

Where is flame cell found?

Flame cells are found in freshwater invertebrates, such as flatworms, including parasitic tapeworms and free-living planaria.

How do Planaria sense light?

Planarians appear to have separate ocular and extraocular sensing systems. ... Planarians sense visible light through their cerebral eye. On the other hand, UV light sensing (extraocular) is dispersed throughout the planarian body.

Which group possesses excretory structure known as Protonephridia?

Protonephridia or flame cells are the excretory structures in Platyhelminthes (Flatworms, e.g., Planaria), rotifers, some annelids and the cephalochordate – Amphioxus.

Does amphioxus have Protonephridia?

In Amphioxus, one above each gill slit on either side, there are 90 to 100 pairs of protonephridia present segmentally on the dorso-lateral pharyngeal wall. Simply, as structures, they are ciliated, thin walled, closed ectodermal tubules.

What is the difference between Protonephridia and Nephridia?

Both are excretory organs. protonephridia ,it found in platyhelminthes while nephridia is excretory organ of annelida.
