Thrombocytopenia (THROM-bo-si-to-PE-ne-ah) is a condition in which your blood has a lower than normal number of blood cell fragments called platelets (PLATE-lets). Platelets are made in your bone marrow along with other kinds of blood cells.

How thrombocytopenia is caused?

Thrombocytopenia rarely is inherited; or it can be caused by a number of medications or conditions. Whatever the cause, circulating platelets are reduced by one or more of the following processes: trapping of platelets in the spleen, decreased platelet production or increased destruction of platelets.

Where do platelets get made?

Platelets are made in our bone marrow, the sponge-like tissue inside our bones. Bone marrow contains stem cells that develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Platelets and other blood components are always needed.

Where are platelets made liver?

Platelet production is largely associated with thrombopoietin (TPO). TPO is predominantly synthesized in the liver in parenchymal and sinusoidal endothelial cells and in the kidneys. Small amounts are also made in bone marrow stromal cells.

Where are platelets produced and stored?

Platelets are formed when cytoplasmic fragments of megakaryocytes, which are very large cells in the bone marrow, pinch off into the circulation as they age. They are stored in the spleen.

Thrombocytopaenia (low platelets) Overview - platelet physiology, classification, pathophysiology

What stimulates platelet production?

Thrombopoietin is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the liver and kidney which regulates the production of platelets. It stimulates the production and differentiation of megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells that bud off large numbers of platelets.

Where in the body is blood produced?

Blood cells are made in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is the soft, spongy material in the center of the bones.

Where are platelets destroyed?

Under conditions of TCP, the spleen and liver are the sites for accelerated platelet destruction, and in thrombocytosis, the spleen can become a supplemental breeding ground for megakaryocytes, in addition to the bone marrow space.

Can hepatitis A cause thrombocytopenia?

The onset of the thrombocytopenia is rarely abrupt and severe during acute viral hepatitis A (HAV)^2–5, B (HBV)^5–7, C (HCV)⁶ and E (HEV)^9–11. This appears to have a course similar to that of the thrombocytopenia associated with self-limiting infections in children, such as varicella, rubella, or mumps⁷.

Can liver issues cause low platelets?

Thrombocytopenia (platelet count <150,000/μL) is a common complication in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) that has been observed in up to 76% of patients. Moderate thrombocytopenia (platelet count, 50,000/μL–75,000/μL) occurs in approximately 13% of patients with cirrhosis.

What is the most common cause of low platelet count?

One of the most common causes of low platelets is a condition called immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). You may hear it called by its old name, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Where in the body is erythropoietin produced?

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone produced primarily by the kidneys, with small amounts made by the liver. EPO plays a key role in the production of red blood cells (RBCs), which carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. This test measures the amount of erythropoietin in the blood.

Do low platelets make you feel tired?

Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) definition and facts. Symptoms and signs of thrombocytopenia may include fatigue, bleeding, and others.

How can thrombocytopenia be prevented?

If you're at risk for thrombocytopenia, these steps may help prevent it: Avoid medicines that thin blood and increase bleeding risk, such as aspirin, naprosyn and ibuprofen. Take care with contact sports and activities that can cause injuries, bruising and bleeding. Minimize contact with toxic chemicals.

What foods to avoid if you have low platelets?

• Avoid activities that could cause injury. Ask your doctor which activities are safe for you. ...
• Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all. Alcohol slows the production of platelets in your body. ...
• Use caution with over-the-counter medications.

What foods cause low platelets?

• quinine, which is found in tonic water.
• alcohol.
• cranberry juice.
• cow's milk.
• tahini.

Which hepatitis is subclinical?

Clinical manifestations — Approximately 70 percent of patients with acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection have subclinical or anicteric hepatitis, while 30 percent develop icteric hepatitis.

Can hepatitis cause low platelets?

Chronic hepatitis caused by HBV and hepatitis C virus HCV) has been documented as a possible cause of thrombocytopenia, even in the absence of cirrhosis [31].

Does Hepatitis B cause thrombocytopenia?

Hepatitis B infection is associated with an increased incidence of thrombocytopenia in healthy adults without cirrhosis. J Viral Hepat.

How are platelets manufactured?

Platelets are produced from very large bone marrow cells called megakaryocytes. As megakaryocytes develop into giant cells, they undergo a process of fragmentation that results in the release of over 1,000 platelets per megakaryocyte.

Where are WBC destroyed?

The lifespan of white blood cells ranges from 13 to 20 days, after which time they are destroyed in the lymphatic system.

Where are RBC destroyed?

The red cells are physiologically destroyed in spleen. To pass through the narrow gaps in splenic sinusoids need the deformability (flexibility, elasticity) of the red cells. When the nucleus is extruded out in the late normoblast stage in bone marrow, new synthesis of RNA is stopped.

Where do T cell lymphocytes mature in the body?

Precursors of T cells migrate from the bone marrow and mature in the thymus.

What stimulates white blood cell production?

Growth Factors to Boost White Blood Cells

Filgrastim and lenograstim are granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs) Pegfilgrastim is a long-acting form of G-CSF. It works in the same way as filgrastim but can be given less often. Sargramostim is a granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF).

Where is bone marrow located?

Bone marrow is found in the center of most bones and has many blood vessels. There are two types of bone marrow: red and yellow. Red marrow contains blood stem cells that can become red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. Yellow marrow is made mostly of fat.
