The galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis) covers the upper part of the cranium; behind, it is attached, in the interval between its union with the Occipitales, to the external occipital protuberance and highest nuchal lines of the occipital bone; in front, it forms a short and narrow prolongation between its ...

Where is the aponeurosis located?

Aponeuroses are connective tissues found on the surface of pennate muscles and are in close association with muscle fascicles. In addition to transmitting muscle forces to the external tendon, aponeurosis has been hypothesized to influence the direction of muscle shape change during a contraction.

What is the origin of the epicranial aponeurosis?

Structure. In humans, the epicranial aponeurosis originates from the external occipital protuberance and highest nuchal lines of the occipital bone. It merges with the occipitofrontalis muscle.

Is the epicranial aponeurosis a tendon?

Epicranial Aponeurosis also referred to as the Galea Aponeurotica or the aponeurosis epicranialis is a broad tendon and is the intermediate section of the occipitofrontalis muscle. It runs from the superior portion of the frontal bone and covers the parietal bones to the lambdoid suture.

What are the Epicranial muscles?

The occipitofrontalis muscle (epicranius muscle) is a muscle which covers parts of the skull. It consists of two parts or bellies: the occipital belly, near the occipital bone, and the frontal belly, near the frontal bone. It is supplied by the supraorbital artery, the supratrochlear artery, and the occipital artery.

Epicranial aponeurosis

What does the epicranial aponeurosis do?

At the top of your head is the epicranial aponeurosis. It is like a thin helmet beneath the scalp, and provides the attachment sites for the occipitofrontalis muscle, a muscle that controls the eyebrows and facial expressions. The abdominal aponeurosis envelopes the abdominal muscles.

What aponeurosis means?

aponeurosis, a flat sheet or ribbon of tendonlike material that anchors a muscle or connects it with the part that the muscle moves. The aponeurosis is composed of dense fibrous connective tissue containing fibroblasts (collagen-secreting spindle-shaped cells) and bundles of collagenous fibres in ordered arrays.

Are fascia and aponeurosis the same thing?

is that aponeurosis is (anatomy) a flattened fibrous membrane, similar to a tendon, that binds muscles together or connects them to other body parts like skin or bone while fascia is a wide band of material covering the ends of roof rafters, sometimes supporting a gutter in steep-slope roofing, but typically it is a ...

Where is the external oblique aponeurosis?

The aponeurosis of the external oblique runs down the center of the abdomen, starting at the bottom of the ribs and ending at the pubis. It's part of the sheath of the rectus abdominis and runs crosswise to attach the obliques to the other abdominal muscles.

Why is aponeurosis different from tendon?

The key difference between tendon and aponeurosis is that tendon allows the body to move and be flexible while aponeurosis allows the body to be strong and stable. ... Moreover, aponeurosis is a delicate connective tissue while the tendon is a tough connective tissue.

Where is the orbicularis oculi muscle located?

The orbicularis muscle is located just underneath the skin of the eyelid. In general, the muscle attaches to the medial canthal region medially and the lateral canthal region laterally. The orbicularis oculi muscle is divided into two sections, the orbital and palpebral sections.

Which describes the location of the orbicularis oculi muscle?

Orbicularis oculi is located in the orbital region of the face. It surrounds the orbit and extends into nearby regions of the head; eyelids, eyebrows, temporal and infraorbital regions. The muscle overlies corrugator supercilii and it blends inferiorly with the highly variable malaris muscle, when present.

What is occipital belly?

The occipitalis muscle, or occipital belly, is a muscle situated on the back of the skull. Some anatomists consider occipitalis and frontalis to be two discrete muscles while others prefer to categorize them as two regions of the same muscle unit – the epicranius, or occipitofrontalis.

What is the transversus abdominis?

The transversus abdominus is the "cumberbun" muscle of the abdomen. It is the deepest of all the abdominal muscles and is oriented from side to side instead of the abdominal muscles we usually see that go from up to down. This muscle is considered one of the most important abdominal muscles to prevent back pain.

What is internal oblique aponeurosis?

It represents a continuation of the layer of the internal intercostal muscles of the thorax ¹. ... Below the level of the costal margin and above the arcuate line, the internal oblique aponeurosis splits anteriorly and posteriorly around the rectus muscle to form the anterior and posterior rectus sheath.

Where are obliques found in the body?

Obliques are the external oblique muscle whose fibers angle down as it covers both sides of the abdominal region. The external oblique muscle has two sets of fibers, which cover the left and right abdomen, that are connected by a wide aponeurosis sheet in the center of the abdomen.

Where does the external oblique end?

Though it's all one continuous muscle, we'll look at the external oblique in two parts, a posterior part that arises from the twelfth to the tenth ribs, and an anterior part that arises from the ninth to the sixth rib. The anterior part of the external oblique ends in this external oblique aponeurosis.

What is cranial aponeurosis?

The galea aponeurotica (also called the galeal or epicranial aponeurosis or the aponeurosis epicranialis) is a tough fibrous sheet of connective tissue that extends over the cranium, forming the middle (third) layer of the scalp.

What is plantar aponeurosis?

The Plantar aponeurosis is the modification of Deep fascia, which covers the sole. It is a thick connective tissue, that functions to support and protect the underlying vital structures of the foot. The fascia is thick centrally, known as aponeurosis and is thin along the sides.

What forms the abdominal Aponeurosis?

The Rectus Sheath is an aponeurosis formed by the five muscles of the abdomen. It has an anterior and posterior wall for most of its length. The anterior wall is formed by the aponeuroses of the external oblique and half of the internal oblique.

Is the linea alba an aponeurosis?

The linea alba is an aponeurosis of the ventral muscles and plays a bigger role for the rectus sheath.

Which two muscles are connected with an aponeurosis?

Aponeuroses of oblique and transverse abdominal muscles blend with and attach to the thoracolumbar fascia, which surrounds the paraspinal and quadratus lumborum muscles.

Which muscles lies deep to the orbicularis oculi in the eyelid and orbit?

Which is a parallel muscle located in the jaw? The ____________ palpebrae superioris muscle is located deep to the orbicularis oculi in the orbit and the eyelid, and acts to open the eye.

Where is the triangularis muscle located?

Muscles of the head, face, and neck (labeled as triangularis near chin). The depressor anguli oris muscle (triangularis muscle) is a facial muscle. It originates from the mandible and inserts into the angle of the mouth. It is associated with frowning, as it depresses the corner of the mouth.
