Spodumene is from the Greek word spodumenos which means “burnt to ashes.” This is a reference to its most common color. You will rarely find gray spodumene cut as gems, but the other colors can be spectacular. Kunzite is the pink variety of spodumene. It is primarily from Afghanistan.

Where can spodumene be found?

Spodumene deposits are found in locations all around the world. The most notable deposits are found in Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, Pakistan and the United States (California, North Carolina and South Dakota).

Where is spodumene mined in the world?

Large quantities of spodumene have been found in Africa, Australia, and North America. Today, Australian spodumene ore represents the highest grade with Li2O concentrations of around 4% at the Greenbushes mine.

What rock is spodumene found in?

spodumene, also called Triphane, a lithium aluminum silicate mineral (LiAlSi₂O₆) in the pyroxene family, an important ore of lithium and a source of ceramic materials. It is ordinarily found in lithium-bearing granite pegmatites.

What is spodumene used for?

Spodumene is a lithium aluminum silicate mineral usually found in pegmatite veins. In its natural opaque form, Spodumene is worked as a lithium ore and processed into different grades for use in ceramics, glass, batteries, steel, fluxing agents and medicine.

How is lithium extracted from spodumene?

What does spodumene mean in Greek?

History and Etymology for spodumene

probably from French spodumène, from German Spodumen, from Greek spodoumenos, present participle of spodousthai to be burnt to ashes, from spodos ashes.

What is spodumene made of?

Spodumene is a pyroxene mineral consisting of lithium aluminium inosilicate, LiAl(SiO₃)₂, and is a source of lithium. It occurs as colorless to yellowish, purplish, or lilac kunzite (see below), yellowish-green or emerald-green hiddenite, prismatic crystals, often of great size.

What is spodumene worth?

It is forecasted that in 2020, spodumene will cost 550 U.S. dollars per metric ton, an increase from the forecasted price in 2016 of 517 U.S. dollars per metric ton.

Is spodumene a silicate mineral?

Spodumene is a chain silicate/pyroxene-type mineral, with the presence of silica in the tetrahedral form (Skinner and Evans, 1960).

What is the difference between spodumene and lithium?

Although lithium carbonate can be converted into lithium hydroxide, it comes at an additional cost. ... Higher quality, spodumene typically hosts higher lithium content in comparison to most brines. Geographic location, rock minerals are way more homogeneously distributed on earth with deposits on each continent's.

Is spodumene a lithium?

Spodumene has a theoretical Li2O content of 8.03%. Due to its high lithium content, spodumene is considered the most important lithium ore mineral. A typical run of mine ore can contain 1-2% Li2O, while a typical spodumene concentrate suitable for lithium carbonate production contains 6-7% Li2O (75% - 87% spodumene).

Is spodumene toxic?

Eye contact may cause mechanical, abrasive injury. There may be no immediate signs or symptoms of exposure to hazardous concentrations of respirable crystalline silica (quartz). However, prolonged overexposure to respirable crystalline silica may cause lung disease (silicosis) and increase the risk of lung cancer.

How do you identify spodumene?

Spodumene is strongly pleochroic. The pleochroism is easily observed in many transparent crystals, where the color ranges from yellow to violet when viewed at different angles. Pink Kunzite will often exhibit a deeper pink color on crystal terminations due to the pleochroism. Spodumene can grow into enormous crystals.

Is Augite a mineral?

Augite is a common rock-forming pyroxene mineral with formula (Ca,Na)(Mg,Fe,Al,Ti)(Si,Al)₂O₆. The crystals are monoclinic and prismatic.

Where is tantalite found?

It has been found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia (Guainía and Vichada), Egypt, northern Europe, Madagascar, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of Congo, the United States (California, Colorado, Maine, and Virginia), and Zimbabwe. Brazil has the world's largest reserve of tantalite (52.1%).

Where is wollastonite found?

Deposits of wollastonite have been found in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, and Utah. These deposits are typically skarns containing wollastonite as the major component and calcite, diopside, garnet, idocrase, and (or) quartz as minor components.

What is the density of spodumene?

It is obtained after high temperature treatment of α-spodumene and is the base mineral of almost every lithium extraction processes. It has a tetragonal structure [34,35] and a density of 2.374 g·cm−3.

Is spodumene the same as Kunzite?

Kunzite is the pink variety of spodumene. It is primarily from Afghanistan. Strongly pleochrotic, the crystals are colorless on the long axis and pink to violet down the C axis.

Who are the biggest lithium miners?

Jiangxi Ganfeng is the largest lithium metal producer in the world, while its lithium compound capacity ranks third worldwide and first in China. The firm holds lithium resources across Australia, Argentina, and Mexico and has over 4,844 employees.

How common is pyrite?

It has a chemical composition of iron sulfide (FeS₂) and is the most common sulfide mineral. It forms at high and low temperatures and occurs, usually in small quantities, in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks worldwide. Pyrite is so common that many geologists would consider it to be a ubiquitous mineral.

Is spodumene a feldspar?

Spodumene is a silicate mineral often referred to as lithium feldspar. Its mineral form is characterized by hard needle-like grains of brilliant white color.

What does hiddenite look like?

Hiddenite is a pale-to-emerald green variety of spodumene that is sometimes used as a gemstone. ... Initially, the yellowish to greenish-yellow hiddenites were thought to be gemmy diopside.

Is spodumene a flux?

Our spodumene is a substitute from Laguna, is chemical grade and sourced from Australia. It is used as a source of lithia, and is often used as a replacement for feldspar. Lithium, in turn, serves two main purposes in ceramics: it is a very powerful flux, and it also improves the thermal properties of a claybody.
