The Nansen ice shelf (NIS) is located along the western Ross Sea in Victoria Land, East Antarctica. The NIS is formed by the adjacent flow of the Reeves and Priestley outlet glaciers (Frezzotti and Mabin, 1994), where its northern boundary abuts the Drygalski ice tongue (DIT) (Figures 1A,B; Khazendar et al., 2001).

Where are ice shelves found?

Ice shelves are found along the coasts of the world's two remaining ice sheets, Antarctica and Greenland. A few well-known shelves dot the northern hemisphere along Canada's coast, but the majority of ice shelves are found along the coast of Antarctica.

What is the Larsen B ice shelf where is it located and what happened to it?

While the collapse of the Larsen B was unprecedented in terms of scale, it was not the first ice shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula to experience an abrupt break up. The northernmost section of the Larsen Ice Shelf Complex, called Larsen A, lost about 1,500 square kilometers of ice in an abrupt event in January 1995.

Where is a continental ice sheet located today?

The two ice sheets on Earth today cover most of Greenland and Antarctica. During the last ice age, ice sheets also covered much of North America and Scandinavia. Together, the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets contain more than 99 percent of the freshwater ice on Earth.

What is Antarctica's ice shelf called?

The Ross Ice Shelf is the largest ice shelf of Antarctica (as of 2013 an area of roughly 500,809 square kilometres (193,363 sq mi) and about 800 kilometres (500 mi) across: about the size of France).

Where are Antarctica's largest ice shelves?

Ice shelves are common around Antarctica, and the largest ones are the Ronne-Filchner, Ross and McMurdo Ice Shelves. Ice shelves surround 75% of Antarctica's coastline, and cover an area of over 1.561 million square kilometres (a similar size to the Greenland Ice Sheet).

Where in Antarctica is the Ross Ice Shelf?

Ross Ice Shelf, world's largest body of floating ice, lying at the head of Ross Sea, itself an enormous indentation in the continent of Antarctica. The ice shelf lies between about 155° W and 160° E longitude and about 78° S and 86° S latitude.

How far south did glaciers go in North America?

Laurentide Ice Sheet, principal glacial cover of North America during the Pleistocene Epoch (about 2,600,000 to 11,700 years ago). At its maximum extent it spread as far south as latitude 37° N and covered an area of more than 13,000,000 square km (5,000,000 square miles).

Where is the worlds largest ice sheet located today?

The Antarctic ice sheet is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. The Greenland ice sheet occupies about 82% of the surface of Greenland, and if melted would cause sea levels to rise by 7.2 metres.

When did the Larsen ice shelf break off?

In March 2002, scientists witnessed the largest ice shelf breakup in recent history. Within 35 days, more than 3,250 square kilometers (1,255 square miles) of the Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica shattered into small icebergs.

How big was the Larsen B ice shelf?

The ice shelf originally covered an area of 85,000 square kilometres (33,000 sq mi), but following the disintegration in the north and the break away of iceberg A-17, it now covers an area of 67,000 square kilometres (26,000 sq mi).

How much of the Greenland ice sheet has melted?

The total aerial extent of surface melting (total melt-day extent) for 2021 through August 16 is 21.3 million square kilometers (8.2 million square miles), tied for the fourteenth highest total to date, and well above the 1981 to 2010 average of 18.6 million square kilometers (7.2 million square miles).

Why are ice shelves melting in Antarctica?

Ice sheet tipping points

Since the early 1990s, Antarctica has lost roughly three trillion tons of ice. Today, the rate of loss is accelerating as warm ocean water melts and destabilizes the floating ice shelves that hold back West Antarctica's glaciers, causing those glaciers to flow more quickly into the sea.

Why is the ice breaking in Antarctica?

In recent decades, however, scientists have said climate change is causing worrisome changes across the Antarctic region. Global warming can, for instance, accelerate an ice shelf's retreat and cause it to collapse, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Which Ice Shelf is located in the northwestern region of East Antarctica?

Larsen Ice Shelf, ice shelf in the northwestern Weddell Sea, adjoining the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula and named for Norwegian whaler Captain Carl A. Larsen, who sailed along the ice front in 1893.

Where did the glaciers stop in Ohio?

Eventually, ice retreated north of the present-day Niagara River outlet and modern Lake Erie was established with a mean elevation of about 570 feet above m.s.l. Highest Lake Maumee stage in the Erie basin during the retreat of the Wisconsinan glaciers from Ohio.

Where did the glaciers stop in North America?

The Pinedale (central Rocky Mountains) or Fraser (Cordilleran ice sheet) glaciation was the last of the major glaciations to appear in the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The Pinedale lasted from around 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, and was at its greatest extent between 23,500 and 21,000 years ago.

What would happen if the Ross Ice Shelf melted?

Its magnitude, and the fact that thinning of the ice shelf will speed up the flow of Antarctica's ice sheets into the ocean, mean that it carries significant sea level rise potential if it were to melt. Melting ice shelves like the Ross could cause seas to rise by several feet over the next few centuries.

What is under the Ross Ice Shelf?

The Ross Sea ice shelf is one the largest ice shelves in the world. It is the size of France, and though the 200-foot-tall cliffs of ice extend 500 miles, that is just, as they say, the tip of the iceberg. Most of the ice lies hidden below the cold, dark salt water.

What is Enderby Land named after?

It was first documented in western and eastern literature in February 1831 by John Biscoe aboard the whaling brig Tula, and named after the Enderby Brothers of London, the ship's owners who encouraged their captains to combine exploration with sealing.

Where is the iceberg that just broke off?

An enormous iceberg, a little bigger than the state of Rhode Island, has broken off of Antarctica.

Where is a-76 iceberg now?

In mid-May 2021, A-76, currently the world's largest floating iceberg, calved from the Filchner–Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica. According to the news, the new iceberg, effectively a piece of floating ice shelf, detached from western side of the Ice Shelf. It now floats in the Weddell Sea.

Where is a-76 now?

The A-76 iceberg is roughly finger-shaped and is 105 miles long and 15 miles wide. It is now freely floating in the Weddell Sea, a large bay in the western Antarctic, which became infamous when world-renown explorer Ernest Shackleton lost his ship, the Endurance, to pack ice in the region.
