Alternation of generations (also known as metagenesis or heterogenesis) is the type of life cycle that occurs in those plants and algae in the Archaeplastida and the Heterokontophyta that have distinct haploid sexual and diploid asexual stages.

What is the alternation of generation in biology?

alternation of generations, also called metagenesis or heterogenesis, in biology, the alternation of a sexual phase and an asexual phase in the life cycle of an organism. The two phases, or generations, are often morphologically, and sometimes chromosomally, distinct.

What part of the alternation of generations is generated through meiosis?

The gametophyte generation begins with a spore produced by meiosis. The spore is haploid, and all the cells derived from it (by mitosis) are also haploid. In due course, this multicellular structure produces gametes — by mitosis — and sexual reproduction then produces the diploid sporophyte generation.

What is alternation of generations give examples?

It describes an alternation in forms which occur in plants and some Protists. ... The classic example is the mosses, where the green plant is a haploid gametophyte and the reproductive phase is the brown diploid sporophyte. The two forms occur together.

Does alternation of generations occur in angiosperms?

All land plants have alternation of generations. ... For flowering plants (Angiosperms), the sporophyte generation is almost the whole life cycle (the green plant, roots etc.) except the small reproductive structures (pollen and ovule). The sporophyte produces spores (hence the name), by meiosis.

What is alternation of generation in bryophytes?

Alternation of generations is a life-cycle involving two phases of life, which regularly alternate with each other. In Bryophytes, the first phase is the gametophytic phase, in which gametes are produced, that contain half the number of chromosomes.

What is alternation of generation in marchantia?

Marchantia undergoes the alternation of generations typical of land plants. Thus, through its life cycle, a multicellular haploid gametophyte generation alternates with a multicellular diploid sporophyte generation.

What is alternation of generation in obelia?

Alternation of generations is a type of life cycle that switches between two forms, the asexual polyp and the sexual medusa. ... In the phylum Cnidaria, class Hydrozoa has many groups that have alternation of generations. The best model of this process is Obelia, which has equally balanced forms.

What is alternation of generation in Class 11?

Hint: Alternation of generation refers to the occurrence of diploid and haploid multicellular organisms, giving rise to new organisms. This process allows for both the dynamic and volatile action of sexual reproduction as well as consistence act of asexual reproduction. It is most commonly found in plants and algae.

Which protists use alternation of generations?

Protists. Some protists undergo an alternation of generations, including the slime molds, foraminifera, and many marine algae. The life cycle of slime molds is very similar to that of fungi. Haploid spores germinate to form swarm cells or myxamoebae.

How did alternation of generations evolve?

Evolution of the Alternation of Generations

When the sporophyte creates spores, the cells undergo meiosis, which allows the gametophyte generation to recombine the genetics present. ... As plants colonized the land, they were initially isomorphic, or both the gametophytes and sporophytes looked and acted about the same.

Where is metagenesis found?

These species are characterised by their ability to exhibit both the stages of polyp and medusa as a part of their life cycle. As polyp represents the asexual form while the medulla represents the sexual form, it is quite evident that the metagenesis is common in Obelia.

Which plants alternation of generations?

Alternation of generations occurs in almost all multicellular red and green algae, both freshwater forms (such as Cladophora) and seaweeds (such as Ulva). In most, the generations are homomorphic (isomorphic) and free-living.

What is the alternation of generation in gymnosperms?

Gymnosperms are unique plants because they produce naked seeds. This alternation of generations in gymnosperms, such as pine trees, means that there are multicellular stages that are haploid and diploid. ... There, the egg is fertilized by the sperm, and the conifer moves into the diploid stage of the life cycle.

Why is it called alternation of generations?

The multicellular haploid plant structure is called the gametophyte, which is formed from the spore and give rise to the haploid gametes. The fluctuation between these diploid and haploid stages that occurs in plants is called the alternation of generations.

What is alternation of generation for Class 9?

“Alternation of generations is a type of life cycle in which subsequent generations of plants alternate between diploid and haploid organisms.”

What is alternation of generation with diagram?

Alternation of generations is a term primarily used to describe the life cycle of plants. 2. A multicellular gametophyte, which is haploid with n chromosomes, alternates with a multicellular sporophyte, which is diploid with 2n chromosomes, made up of n pairs.

What is sporophyte generation?

In plants, the sporophyte generation is that phase in their life cycle that begins with the union of two single-celled haploid gametes. This union of haploid (n) gametes results in the formation of a single-celled diploid (2n) zygote. The zygote germinates and grows by going through a series of mitotic divisions.

What is alternation of generation in Ferns?

Alternation of Generations

The fern life cycle requires two generations of plants to complete itself. This is called alternation of generations. One generation is diploid, meaning it carries two identical sets of chromosomes in each cell or the full genetic complement (like a human cell).

Where is Sporophyte generation in marchantia?

The common liverwort Marchantia produces umbrella shaped structures that raise the gametangia above the main gametophyte body and the sporophytes develop on the underside of these structures.

Where does division take place in life cycle of marchantia?

It divides by a transverse division to form lower stalk cell and upper cell (Fig. 3 F). The lower cell forms the single celled stalk. The upper cell further divides by transverse division to form two cells.

What is alternation of generations quizlet?

Alternation of Generations. This term refers to the life cycle of most plants in which the generations alternate between haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes. All embryophytes and some algae undergo this process.

Which type of alternation of generation is found in bryophytes and pteridophytes?

“Alternation of generation” term used by Hofmeister in 1851. He observed that in mosses and ferns there are two types of morphologically distinct individuals present in the life cycle. Both alternate in a life cycle back to back. Sporophyte generation is main and dominant in pteridophytes.
