Adult Trichinella spp. reside in the intestinal tract of the vertebrate host; larvae can be found encapsulated in muscle tissue.

Where do Trichinella worms live?

Trichinella spiralis has an extremely broad host range; almost any species of mammal can become infected. Adult worms live around the columnar epithelial cells of the small intestine and the larvae live in striated muscle cells of the same mammal.

Where is Trichinella found?

Most cases come from consuming undercooked wild game meat, such as bear, while some other cases come from eating pork products. The parasite is not found in domestic pigs raised in confinement, but can be found in pigs raised outdoors in close contact with wildlife and rodents.

What is the habitat of Trichinella spiralis?

The normal niche of Trichinella spiralis adults was found to be in the epithelial layer of the mucosa of the small intestine of its host. Most worms were found in the epithelium at the base of the villi and in the glandular crypts.

Where is Trichinella endemic?

In South and Central America, Trichinella infection is still endemic in Argentina, Chile, and Mexico in both humans and pigs (111, 144, 148). In East Asia, the domestic cycle occurs in China (158).

How do you get rid of trichinosis?

Anti-parasitic medication.

Anti-parasitic medication is the first line of treatment for trichinosis. If the trichinella parasite is discovered early, albendazole (Albenza) or mebendazole (Emverm) can be effective in eliminating the worms and larvae in the intestine.

Is there trichinosis in Australia?

Trichinellosis is not present in mainland Australia and incursion would have considerable public health, trade and animal health implications. Ongoing surveillance, research and prevention strategies are important to ensure the parasite is not introduced to Australia in meat products or wildlife.

Is Trichinella a bacteria?

Trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, is a disease that people can get by eating raw or undercooked meat from animals infected with the microscopic parasite Trichinella.

What type of organism causes trichinosis?

Trichinellosis (trichinosis) is caused by nematodes (roundworms) of the genus Trichinella. In addition to the classical agent T. spiralis (found worldwide in many carnivorous and omnivorous animals), several other species of Trichinella are now recognized, including T.

How common is Trichinella?

Worldwide, an estimated 10,000 cases of trichinellosis occur every year. Several different species of Trichinella can cause human disease; the most common species is Trichinella spiralis, which has a global distribution and is the species most commonly found in pigs.

What phylum is Trichinella worm?

Trichinella spiralis, parasitic worm of the phylum Nematoda that causes trichinosis, a serious disease in humans and other mammals, including pigs, cats, dogs, bears, foxes, and rats.

What is the life cycle of the Trichinella worm?

The basic steps of the life cycle for Trichinella include (1) release from cysts after exposure to gastric acid and pepsin, (2) invasion of the small intestine where they develop into adult worms, where after 1 week (3–4), the females release larvae that migrate to striated muscles where they encyst (5).
