Cobaltite contains 35.5% Co, 45.2% As, and 19.3% S ± Fe and Ni. The mineral is mostly found in the Cobalt District, Ontario, Canada; Sweden; Norway; Germany; Cornwall, England; Australia; Democratic Republic of the Congo; and Morocco.

How is Cobaltite made?

Cobaltite is a sulfide mineral composed of cobalt, arsenic, and sulfur, CoAsS. Its impurities may contain up to 10% iron and variable amounts of nickel. Structurally, it resembles pyrite (FeS₂) with one of the sulfur atoms replaced by an arsenic atom.

Is Cobaltite a mineral?

Cobaltite is a rare sulfide mineral, used primarily as an ore for cobalt.

Where is Enargite found?

It occurs in the mineral deposits at Butte, Montana, San Juan Mountains, Colorado and at both Bingham Canyon and Tintic, Utah. It is also found in the copper mines of Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and the Philippines.

Where is cassiterite found?

Most sources of cassiterite today are found in alluvial or placer deposits containing the resistant weathered grains. The best sources of primary cassiterite are found in the tin mines of Bolivia, where it is found in hydrothermal veins. Rwanda has a nascent cassiterite mining industry.

How is cassiterite naturally formed?

Primary deposits of cassiterite worth mining are almost always found in high-temperature hydrothermal veins that accompany granitic intrusions. ... Most of the world's cassiterite is produced from secondary, placer deposits. These are sediment-hosted concentrations of cassiterite in stream valleys and along shorelines.

How is cassiterite formed?

The cassiterite is formed by hydrothermal process and occurs as veins, alluvial, and placer. The grains are resistant to weathering.

How is Covellite formed?

Covellite is known to form in weathering environments in surficial deposits where copper is the primary sulfide. As a primary mineral, the formation of covellite is restricted to hydrothermal conditions, thus rarely found as such in copper ore deposits or as a volcanic sublimate.

Is Enargite an ore?

Enargite is a sulfosalt mineral that is an import ore of copper. Crystals are sometimes coated with a thin layer of Pyrite crystals, giving it a yellow appearance. Enargite is dimorphous with the mineral Luzonite, which forms in tetragonal crystals.

What is Enargite used for?

Uses: As a minor ore of copper and as mineral specimens.

Where is Cobaltite found?

Cobaltite contains 35.5% Co, 45.2% As, and 19.3% S ± Fe and Ni. The mineral is mostly found in the Cobalt District, Ontario, Canada; Sweden; Norway; Germany; Cornwall, England; Australia; Democratic Republic of the Congo; and Morocco.

Where is Pentlandite found?

Pentlandite is found within the lower margins of mineralised layered intrusions, the best examples being the Bushveld igneous complex, South Africa, the Voiseys Bay troctolite intrusive complex in Canada, the Duluth gabbro, in North America, and various other localities throughout the world.

Is Cobaltite magnetic?

Nickel cobaltite (NCO) is a binary transition-metal oxide, which is extensively used as an electrocatalyst and magnetic material. ... Besides, NCO is also a promising magnetic material due to its unique structural composition, where the cations are seated in octahedral sites surrounded by oxygen vacancies.

What is Cobalts cleavage?

Cleavage is distinct in three directions forming cubes. Fracture is uneven to subconchoidal. Hardness is 5.5. Specific Gravity is approximately 6.0 - 6.4+ (heavier than average for metallic minerals)

How common is pyrite?

It has a chemical composition of iron sulfide (FeS₂) and is the most common sulfide mineral. It forms at high and low temperatures and occurs, usually in small quantities, in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks worldwide. Pyrite is so common that many geologists would consider it to be a ubiquitous mineral.

What rock is tetrahedrite found in?

Tetrahedrite occurs in low to moderate temperature hydrothermal veins and in some contact metamorphic deposits. It is a minor ore of copper and associated metals. It was first described in 1845 for occurrences in Freiberg, Saxony, Germany.

What is pyrrhotite mined for?

Pyrrhotite does not have specific applications. It is mined primarily because it is associated with pentlandite, sulfide mineral that can contain significant amounts of nickel and cobalt.

What is the formula of Stannite?

Stannite, a sulfide mineral, chemical formula Cu₂FeSnS₄, that is an ore of tin. It is ordinarily found associated with other sulfide minerals in tin veins, as at Cornwall, England; Zeehan, Tasmania; and Bolivia. Stannite is a member of the chalcopyrite group of sulfides.

What are the elements that can be found in the ore Covellite?

covellite, a sulfide mineral that is a copper ore, cupric sulfide (CuS).

Is Covellite rare or common?

Covellite is copper sulfide (CuS) and it is, in fact, quite rare. In the mines of Montana, it was the secondary, low-value deposit to more-desired copper ores like enargite and bornite.

How do you find Covellite?

Identifying Characteristics

Covellite's iridescence, color, and brassy inclusions of pyrite and chalcopyrite can help distinguish it visually from gems within its hardness range. Covellite leaves a shining, gray-black streak. (Usually, metallic gems, like this copper sulfide, have a colored streak).

Where can cassiterite be found in Nigeria?

Cassiterite ore was sourced from Dogo-Na-Hawa, in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government of Plateau State, Nigeria. The ore was analyzed as mined and its various constituents noted.

How do you identify cassiterite?

Cassiterite is gray, green, brownish black, brown in color or colorless at times. Its appearance varies from transparent to translucent to opaque. It is non-fluorescent with a brownish white streak and a perfect cleavage.

Why is cassiterite so important?

Cassiterite is an economically important mineral, being the primary ore of the metal tin. It is also used as a collectors mineral with the transparent forms being highly desired.
