Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a type of blood cancer that starts in white blood cells in your bone marrow, the soft inner part of your bones. It develops from immature lymphocytes, a kind of white blood cell that's key to your immune system.

Where do leukemia cells come from?

Leukemia begins in the developing blood cells in the bone marrow. All blood cells start out as hematopoietic (hemo = blood; poiesis = make) stem cells. The stem cells undergo multiple stages of development until they reach their adult form. First, blood stem cells develop into either myeloid cells or lymphoid cells.

What is the cause of acute leukemia?

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is caused by a DNA mutation in the stem cells in your bone marrow that produce red blood cells, platelets and infection-fighting white blood cells. The mutation causes the stem cells to produce many more white blood cells than are needed.

Is acute lymphoblastic leukemia inherited?

ALL itself doesn't appear to have a strong inherited component. That is, it doesn't seem to run in families, so a person's risk is not increased if a family member (other than an identical twin - see below) has the disease.

How is acute lymphoblastic leukemia prevented?

There is no known way to prevent most cases of leukemia at this time. Most people who get acute lymphocytic leukemia have no known risk factors, so there is no way to prevent these leukemias from developing.

How did leukemia start?

Leukemia develops when the DNA of developing blood cells, mainly white cells, incurs damage. This causes the blood cells to grow and divide uncontrollably. Healthy blood cells die, and new cells replace them. These develop in the bone marrow.

What were your first signs of leukemia?

• Fever or chills.
• Persistent fatigue, weakness.
• Frequent or severe infections.
• Losing weight without trying.
• Swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen.
• Easy bleeding or bruising.
• Recurrent nosebleeds.
• Tiny red spots in your skin (petechiae)

How I found out my son has leukemia?

To find out if a child has leukemia, a doctor will: Ask questions about the symptoms. Do an exam to check for signs of infection, anemia, unusual bleeding, and swollen lymph nodes. Feel the child's belly to check the liver and spleen because leukemia can make these organs get bigger.

Does leukemia run in families?

Leukemia does not usually run in families, so in most cases, it is not hereditary. However, people can inherit genetic abnormalities that increase their risk of developing this form of cancer. In other cases, environmental and lifestyle factors can increase a person's risk of leukemia.

Are kids with leukemia active?

Doctors diagnose it more than twice as often in children under age 15 and at even higher rates among very young children. “The most active time for leukemia is age 2 to 3,” Dr. Buhtoiarov says. “The frequency is four times higher than in any other age group.” This amounts to about 90 cases per million children.

How does a child with leukemia act?

Common symptoms of leukemia in children include feeling tired and weak, easy bruising or bleeding, and frequent or long-lasting infections. Leukemia is diagnosed with blood and bone marrow tests. Imaging may be done to look for signs of leukemia in different parts of the body.

Does leukemia come on suddenly?

Acute leukemia may cause signs and symptoms that are similar to the flu. They come on suddenly within days or weeks. Chronic leukemia often causes only a few symptoms or none at all. Signs and symptoms usually develop gradually.

How long can you have leukemia without knowing?

Acute leukemias — which are incredibly rare — are the most rapidly progressing cancer we know of. The white cells in the blood grow very quickly, over a matter of days to weeks. Sometimes a patient with acute leukemia has no symptoms or has normal blood work even a few weeks or months before the diagnosis.

Which type of leukemia is most fatal?

Patients with the most lethal form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) – based on genetic profiles of their cancers – typically survive for only four to six months after diagnosis, even with aggressive chemotherapy.

Who discovered acute lymphoblastic leukemia?

John Hughes Bennett (Figure 3), pathologist at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, gave leukemia its first published recognition as a clinical entity and as a blood-related disease. He was then often referred to as the person who first discovered leukemia because his description was more complete and scientific in nature.

Does smoking cause leukemia?

Cigarette smoking causes cancer of the mouth and throat, esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, voicebox (larynx), trachea, bronchus, kidney and renal pelvis, urinary bladder, and cervix, and causes acute myeloid leukemia.

Is leukemia genetic or caused by the environment?

You may be genetically predisposed to developing leukemia, but lifestyle risk factors, such as cigarette smoking, can also make you more likely to develop leukemia. Other environmental factors, such as exposure to certain chemicals and radiation, could also be behind the DNA abnormalities that can cause leukemia.

What foods should leukemia patients avoid?

When it comes to leukemia foods to avoid during treatment, it's important to eliminate foods that might cause food poisoning. These include cold hot dogs and cold deli lunch meat, dry-cured uncooked salami, raw milk products, raw or undercooked beef and shellfish, unpasteurized fruit juice, and undercooked eggs.

Why is leukemia so painful?

Leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) can cause bone or joint pain, usually because your bone marrow has become overcrowded with cancer cells. At times, these cells may form a mass near the spinal cord's nerves or in the joints.

What do leukemia headaches feel like?

A sudden, excruciating headache that quickly becomes unbearably painful to the point where you can't move. Sometimes called a “thunderclap headache”, this is the most concerning type of headache as it can be caused by a life-threatening bleed on the brain.

What is dying from leukemia like?

Studies show that for leukemia patients, infections were the most common cause of death, most often bacterial infections but also fungal infections or a combination of the two. Bleeding was also a fairly common cause of death, often in the brain, lungs or digestive tract.

Does leukemia show up in blood work?

Your doctor will conduct a complete blood count (CBC) to determine if you have leukemia. This test may reveal if you have leukemic cells. Abnormal levels of white blood cells and abnormally low red blood cell or platelet counts can also indicate leukemia.

Where do you bleed when you have leukemia?

What are the symptoms? Symptoms may depend on what type of leukemia you have, but common symptoms include: A new lump or swollen gland in your neck, under your arm, or in your groin. Frequent nosebleeds, bleeding from the gums or rectum, more frequent bruising, or very heavy menstrual bleeding.

Why do some babies get leukemia?

The exact cause of leukemia in children is not known. There are certain conditions passed on from parents to children (inherited) that increase the risk for childhood leukemia. But, most childhood leukemia is not inherited. Researchers have found changes (mutations) in genes of the bone marrow cells.

What age is childhood leukemia most common?

ALL is most common in early childhood, peaking between 2 and 5 years of age. AML tends to be more spread out across the childhood years, but it's slightly more common during the first 2 years of life and during the teenage years.
