Abduction and adduction motions occur within the coronal plane and involve medial-lateral motions of the limbs, fingers, toes, or thumb. Abduction moves the limb laterally away from the midline of the body, while adduction is the opposing movement that brings the limb toward the body or across the midline.

Where does abduction occur in the body?

Abduction – movement away from the midline of the body. This occurs at the hip and shoulder joints during a jumping jack movement. Adduction – movement towards the midline of the body.

What is an example of abduction and adduction?

For example, abduction is raising the arm at the shoulder joint, moving it laterally away from the body, while adduction brings the arm down to the side of the body. Similarly, abduction and adduction at the wrist moves the hand away from or toward the midline of the body.

At what joint does abduction adduction occur in the fingers?

At the metacarpal-phalangeal joints, we can see individual or combined abduction and adduction of the fingers (phalanges) (Figure 2).

What is difference between abduction and adduction?

“Abduction refers to your body part moving away from the midline of your body, adduction is coming towards the midline of your body,” explains Kewley. ... He points out that “if you think about it, if you're always working abduction and not working adduction you're not actually working any of your adductors in your body.”

What is abduction & adduction?

What is abduction and adduction of the hand?

Movements of the Body, Part 1 Synovial joints give the body many ways in which to move. (a)–(b) Flexion and extension motions are in the sagittal (anterior–posterior) plane of motion. ... (e) Abduction and adduction are motions of the limbs, hand, fingers, or toes in the coronal (medial–lateral) plane of movement.

Can the thumb do adduction?

The thumb motions are flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, circumduction, opposition, rotation and apposition. ... When the thumb is adducted it moves strongly against the radial side of the hand and across and in front of the radial third of the palm.

What plane is thumb abduction in?

The thumb abduction motion begins with the thumb aligned with second metacarpal. The movement, occurring only at the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, brings the thumb away from the palm. Be aware that practitioners refer to thumb abduction in a plane 90 degrees to the palm as palmar abduction.

What is abduction give two examples?

Abduction is any motion of the limbs or other body parts that pulls away from the midline of the body. Swinging the hands from the side of the body up to the shoulder or higher is abduction. ... Raising the arms laterally, to the sides and moving the knees away from the midline are some examples of abduction.

Which joints can abduct and adduct?

Adduction, abduction, and circumduction take place at the shoulder, hip, wrist, metacarpophalangeal, and metatarsophalangeal joints.

What is abduction of the hip?

Hip abduction is the movement of the leg away from the midline of the body. We use this action every day when we step to the side, get out of bed, and get out of the car. The hip abductors are important and often forgotten muscles that contribute to our ability to stand, walk, and rotate our legs with ease.

What is adduction of the hip?

Hip adduction involves a movement between the femur and the pelvis within the frontal plane about an anterior-posterior axis of rotation. Regardless of which kinematic strategy is used, adduction results in a reduced distance between the midline of the pelvis and the medial aspect of the femur, as follows: •

What is abduction in anatomy?

In general terms, abduction in the anatomical sense is classified as the motion of a limb or appendage away from the midline of the body. In the case of arm abduction, it is the movement of the arms away from the body within the plane of the torso (sagittal plane).

Is radial deviation abduction?

Adduction and abduction of the wrist have alternative names that may be used: ulnar deviation (adduction) and radial deviation (abduction). Flexion of the wrist from anatomical position bends the hand forward and up.

What is abduction of the fingers?

Abduction of the digits of the hand is defined as moving away from the midline of the hand, which is the middle digit. Abduction, then, spreads the fingers. ... Adduction of the fingers returns them toward the midline, or the middle finger.

What muscles facilitate abduction and adduction of the fingers?

The interossei muscles are intrinsic muscles of the hand located between the metacarpals. They consist of four (or three) palmar and four dorsal muscles that, respectively. These muscles are responsible for finger adduction and abduction.

What do you mean by adduction?

Adduction: Movement of a limb toward the midline of the body. The opposite of adduction is abduction.

What type of dancing is abduction?

Kathak: In types of Indian Dance, Kathak is one which originated in the north Indian land. Luis Erre, Theodore System, G.O.S, Abduction: moving a body part away from the centre of the body. Adduction of a joint moves a bone toward the midline of the body.

What is abduction and adduction of hip?

One of the key functional standards in the post-operative hip replacement patient is to keep the leg in alignment with the hip. ... So abduction means to keep the legs apart or “away” from each other. Through simple deduction, adduction means the opposite- to draw inward, or closer to the body.

What causes adduction?

KEY MOVEMENTS

Adduction (returning thigh to midline): Produced by the adductor group of muscles. Rotation (rotation of the thigh around the hip joint): Produced by the lateral rotator group of muscles and the biceps femoris, sartorius, and gluteus medius and minimus.
