Teratogens can also be found at home or the workplace. The effect is related to type of agent, dose and duration and time of exposure. The first half of pregnancy is the most vulnerable.

• Some medicines.
• Street drugs.
• Alcohol.
• Tobacco.
• Toxic chemicals.
• Some viruses and bacteria.

• carbamazepine (Tegretol)
• chlorobiphenyls.

What are 4 teratogens?

Teratogens are classified into four types: physical agents, metabolic conditions, infection, and finally, drugs and chemicals. The word teratogen originates from the Greek word for monster, teratos.

What are 2 common teratogens?

What are 3 examples of teratogens?

Common teratogens include some medications, recreational drugs, tobacco products, chemicals, alcohol, certain infections, and in some cases, uncontrolled health problems in the birthing parent. Alcohol is a well-known teratogen that can cause harmful effects on the fetus after exposure at any time during pregnancy.

What are environmental teratogens?

Teratogens are defined as any environmental factor that can produce a permanent abnormality in structure or function, restriction of growth, or death of the embryo or fetus.7.

What are 5 types of teratogens?

Teratogenic agents include infectious agents (rubella, cytomegalovirus, varicella, herpes simplex, toxoplasma, syphilis, etc.); physical agents (ionizing agents, hyperthermia); maternal health factors (diabetes, maternal PKU); environmental chemicals (organic mercury compounds, polychlorinated biphenyl or PCB, ...

Is Thalidomide a teratogen?

Thalidomide is a potent teratogen that induces a range of birth defects, most commonly of the developing limbs.

Are drugs teratogens?

Certain drugs such as alcohol, some illegal drugs, and some prescription and over-the-counter medications are known to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Drugs that can cause birth defects are called 'teratogens'.

Do fetuses need oxygen?

Developing babies need oxygen beginning early in pregnancy. But a baby won't take their first breath until after birth. This means that babies don't truly breathe in the womb. Instead, the umbilical cord provides the baby with oxygen until the first breath.

When is the brain most likely to be harmed by teratogens?

Major malformations are more common in early embryos than in newborns; however, most severely affected embryos are spontaneously aborted during the first six to eight weeks of gestation. During organogenesis between days 15 to 60, teratogenic agents are more likely to cause major congenital malformations.

What drugs cause anencephaly?

Medications: Anti-seizure drugs such as phenytoin (Dilantin®), carbamazepine (Tegretol®) and valproic acid (Depakote®) can cause NTDs. Some of these drugs also treat migraines and bipolar disorder.

How many babies are born with birth defects due to drugs?

Less than 2 to 3% of all birth defects result from drugs that are taken to treat a disorder or symptom. Sometimes drugs are essential for the health of the pregnant woman and the fetus. In such cases, a woman should talk with her doctor or other health care practitioner about the risks and benefits of taking the drug.

Is folic acid a teratogen?

Folate deficiency has a well-established teratogenic effect, leading to an increasing risk of neural tube defects. This paper highlights the most recent medical literature about folate deficiency, be it maternal or paternal.

How is alcohol a teratogen?

Both alcohol and its primary metabolite, acetaldehyde, are teratogenic. Exposure during pregnancy may lead to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), and this is said to occur in a substantial proportion of infants born to mothers who are chronic, heavy daily drinkers.

Which enantiomer of thalidomide is teratogenic?

Twenty years after the thalidomide disaster in the late 1950s, Blaschke et al. reported that only the (S)-enantiomer of thalidomide is teratogenic.

Is caffeine a teratogen?

In humans, caffeine does not present any teratogenic risk. The increased risk of the most common congenital malformations entailed by moderate consumption of caffeine is very slight.

Is Covid a teratogen?

According to RCOG, there is currently not enough data to provide a correlation between the risk of miscarriage and COVID-19 or that the virus is teratogenic [27]. The possibility of vertical transmission needs further research as there have been conflicting results so far.

What are chemical teratogens?

A teratogen is an agent that can cause malformations of an embryo or fetus. This can be a chemical substance, a virus or ionizing radiation. This is closely related to a fetotoxin, an agent that causes poisoning effects on a developing fetus.

What toxic agent can cause birth defects?

• Lead.
• Mercury.
• Arsenic.
• PCBs.
• Chlorine.
• Methyl Ethyl Ketone.
• Cadmium.
