Lanthanum is a chemical element with the symbol La and atomic number 57. It is a soft, ductile, silvery-white metal that tarnishes slowly when exposed to air.

When was lanthanum first used?

Word origin: Lanthanum is named after the Greek word lanthanein, which means to escape notice. Discovery: Swedish chemist Carl Gustaf Mosander extracted lanthanum oxide, or lanthana, from an impure cerium nitrate in 1839.

Where is lanthanum found?

Lanthanum mainly is obtained from lanthanum-rich monazite and bastnasite. Other lanthanum-bearing minerals include allanite and cerite. It is mined in the USA, China, Russia, Australia, and India.

What is the history of lanthanum?

History. Lanthanum was discovered in January 1839 by Carl Gustav Mosander at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. He extracted it from cerium which had been discovered in 1803. ... Finally, Mosander explained his delay, saying that he had extracted a second element from cerium, and this he called didymium.

When was the first lanthanide discovered?

The Lanthanides were first discovered in 1787 when a unusual black mineral was found in Ytterby, Sweden. This mineral, now known as Gadolinite, was later separated into the various Lanthanide elements. In 1794, Professor Gadolin obtained yttria, an impure form of yttrium oxide, from the mineral.

Who invented lanthanide?

The discovery of the lanthanides spanned more than a century of work, beginning in the late 1700s. In 1794, the Finnish chemist Johan Gadolin (1760-1852) studied ytterbia, which he believed was a new element.

What is the first lanthanide?

Gadolinite is largely made of the silicates of cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, yttrium, iron, and beryllium; cerium itself was discovered in 1803 by Berzelius and Hisinger and, independently, by Klaproth. It was the first lanthanide to be obtained as an element, by Mosander in 1826.

What was lanthanum used for?

Lanthanum is one of the rare earth elements used to make carbon arc lights which are used in the motion picture industry for studio lighting and projector lights. Lanthanum also makes up about 25% of Misch metal, a material that is used to make flints for lighters.

How was lanthanum found?

Lanthanum was discovered by the Swedish surgeon and chemist Carl-Gustav Mosander in 1839. ... Mosander in 1839 extracted lanthana from impure cerium nitrate and recognized the new element. Lanthanum was isolated in relatively pure form in 1923.

Who discovered cerium?

Cerium was first identified by the Jöns Berzelius and Wilhelm Hisinger in the winter of 1803/4. Martin Klaproth independently discovered it around the same time.

Who is modern periodic table?

Mendeleev's Periodic Table. Mendeleev, who first published his periodic table in 1869 (Figure 3.2. 1), is usually credited with the origin of the modern periodic table.

What was samarium named after?

The mineral samarskite, from which samarium was first isolated, is named after Colonel Samarsky, a Russian mine official. The Soviet hammer, sickle and star are on a background that reflects the use of the element in lasers. A silvery-white metal. Samarium-cobalt magnets are much more powerful than iron magnets.

What is PR in the periodic table?

praseodymium (Pr), chemical element, a rare-earth metal of the lanthanide series of the periodic table.

What element does lanthanum bond with?

Lanthanum reacts with water to form lanthanum hydroxide plus hydrogen gas. Lanthanum is chemically reactive and forms compounds with carbon, nitrogen, boron, selenium, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and with the halogens.

Which is the first member of lanthanide series?

The first member of the lanthanide series is lanthanum .

How is cerium used today?

Uses of cerium

Cerium oxide is used in incandescent gas mantles, as a glass polishing agent and as a catalyst in self-cleaning ovens. Cerium is also extensively used in the film and television industry in carbon arc lighting for studio lighting and projector lights.

Why is cerium used in lighters?

Cerium is the main metal in the alloy mischmetal, which sparks when struck and is used in lighter flints. ... In lighter flints, it's typically mixed with iron oxide and magnesium oxide to increase its hardness. Cerium(III) oxide is used in the walls of self-cleaning ovens.

Is lanthanide a contraction?

lanthanoid contraction, also called lanthanide contraction, in chemistry, the steady decrease in the size of the atoms and ions of the rare earth elements with increasing atomic number from lanthanum (atomic number 57) through lutetium (atomic number 71).

Are there 14 or 15 lanthanides?

Defining the Lanthanides. The lanthanide series consists of the 14 elements, with atomic numbers 58 through 71, that follow lanthanum on the periodic table of elements. ... The latter appear in groups 3 through 12 on the IUPAC version of the periodic table, though they are not numbered on the North American version.
