Bakelite was the major form of “art plastic” from the 1930s through to the 1950s. It was patented by Belgian born Leo Hendrik Baekeland in New York, in 1907, and was the first truly synthetic and thermosetting plastic.

Why was Bakelite discontinued?

Bakelite applications in conservation were discontinued in the 1940s because of certain disadvantages that soon became apparent. The lack of records and relevant information precludes any assumption on the extent of its use and in which institutions.

What invention was Bakelite used for first?

Bakelite was patented on December 7, 1909. The creation of a synthetic plastic was revolutionary for its electrical nonconductivity and heat-resistant properties in electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings and such diverse products as kitchenware, jewelry, pipe stems, children's toys, and firearms.

When was Bakelite first introduced?

A polymeric plastic made from phenol and formaldehyde, Bakelite was one of the earliest synthetic materials to transform the material basis of modern life. It was named for its inventor, Leo Hendrik Baekeland (1863–1944), who discovered the durable plastic in 1907.

Is Bakelite still used today?

Bakelite still has some of its classic applications in automotive and electrical products. But the material also is used in space shuttles, Harp said. Sumitomo Bakelite Co. Ltd., a phenolics maker in Japan that dates to an early license, no longer uses the formal Bakelite trade name on its materials, a spokesman said.

How Bakelite Changed the World

Does Bakelite still contain asbestos?

While Bakelite contained asbestos from at least 1909 to 1974, most American manufacturers phased out asbestos around the mid-1980s. Asbestos plastic products remain in production internationally.

Why is Bakelite so valuable?

Example Bakelite Jewelry Values

Rarity and desirability are some of the reasons Bakelite is so expensive. It's also highly collectible. If you have a piece of Bakelite jewelry and are wondering how much it's worth, it's a good idea to compare it to recently sold items in a similar style.

When was Bakelite last used?

Bakelite was the major form of “art plastic” from the 1930s through to the 1950s.

What was plastic used for in 1907?

In 1907 Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic, meaning it contained no molecules found in nature. Baekeland had been searching for a synthetic substitute for shellac, a natural electrical insulator, to meet the needs of the rapidly electrifying United States.

Who was the father of plastic?

Even more than most scientists, the man is publicity-shy. He is Leo Hendrik Baekeland, inventor of Bakelite, "Father of Plastics."

When was plastic first used?

It was in 1862 that Alexander Parkes introduced the world's first-ever man-made plastic, at the London International Exhibition. “Parkesine,” as it was called, was marketed as an alternative to ivory and horn that Parks discovered while trying to develop a synthetic substitute for shellac for waterproofing.

How was plastic accidentally discovered?

In 1846, Charles Schonbein, a Swiss chemist, accidentally discovered another polymer when he spilled a nitric acid-sulfuric acid mixture on some cotton. A chemical reaction occurred in which the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose fibers in the cotton were converted to nitrate groups catalyzed by the sulfur.

How long ago was plastic invented?

The world's first fully synthetic plastic was Bakelite, invented in New York in 1907, by Leo Baekeland, who coined the term "plastics".

How can you tell the difference between plastic and Bakelite?

Identifying by Weight

Bakelite feels heavier when compared to some other types of plastics, like celluloid. Hold another type of plastic you have identified in one hand, and a piece you know to be Bakelite of approximately the same size in the other. You will often notice the heavier feel of Bakelite.

When did manufacturers stop using Bakelite?

Many companies stopped using Bakelite in the early 1940s as the need for World War II related products took hold. By the end of the War, new technologies in the world of plastics had made Bakelite obsolete. The height of Bakelite jewelry was the late 1930s, up until the end of the Art Deco period.

Is Bakelite better than plastic?

Properties of Bakelite and Plastic:

Bakelite: It is a thermosetting plastic material, does not conduct electricity, therefore, it can be used in insulating materials. Bakelite is resistant to heat and chemical actions and also it is non-flammable. ... This is a cheap material and more versatile than other plastics.

Who invented Bakelite plastic?

Leo Baekeland and the Invention of Bakelite. By 1899, the invention of Velox photographic paper had already made Leo Baekeland a wealthy man. At his Snug Rock estate in Yonkers, New York, he maintained a home laboratory where he and his assistant, Nathaniel Thurlow, involved themselves in a variety of projects.

Why was plastic first invented?

Although mostly for economic and practical reasons, plastic, which is currently overwhelming us, was originally created as a solution to maintain the availability of natural resources on earth.

Is Bakelite jewelry safe to wear?

Bakelite jewelry is stable and considered as safe to wear as any other plastic jewelry; the danger in terms of chemical exposure was in the manufacturing process.

What was so special about Bakelite?
