The "power rule" tells us that to raise a power to a power, just multiply the exponents. Here you see that 5² raised to the 3rd power is equal to 5⁶. The quotient rule tells us that we can divide two powers with the same base by subtracting the exponents. You can see why this works if you study the example shown.

What happens when you raise a power to a power?

When raising a power to a power in an exponential expression, you find the new power by multiplying the two powers together. For example, in the following expression, x to the power of 3 is being raised to the power of 6, and so you would multiply 3 and 6 to find the new power.

What is the rule for power to a power?

The power rule for exponents says that raising a power to a power is the same as multiplying the exponents together.

When raising a power to another power How are exponents simplified?

You just multiply the exponents.

What does it mean to raise something to the second power?

The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. In 8² the "2" says to use 8 twice in a multiplication, so 8² = 8 × 8 = 64. In words: 8² could be called "8 to the power 2" or "8 to the second power", or simply "8 squared" Exponents are also called Powers or Indices.

GCSE Maths - How to Raise One Power to Another Power (Powers Part 3/6) #31

What does raising the power mean?

Exponents are shorthand for repeated multiplication of the same thing by itself. ... This process of using exponents is called "raising to a power", where the exponent is the "power".

What is raising to a power?

To raise a power to a power means to raise one exponent to another. Whether the exponents are real, imaginary, monomials or polynomials, to simplify these problems, all we have to do is multiply the exponents together.

How do you write a raise to a power?

Press the "Shift" and "6" keys to enter a caret symbol. Alternatively, type two asterisks in a row. Enter the exponent.

When raising an exponent to another exponent you multiply the exponents?

Distributing Exponents (Power Rule) : Example Question #1

Simplify. Explanation: When an exponent is being raised by another exponent, we just multiply the powers of the exponents and keep the base the same.

What is raising a number to a power?

When you "raise a number to a power," you're multiplying the number by itself, and the "power" represents how many times you do so. So 2 raised to the 3rd power is the same as 2 x 2 x 2, which equals 8.

How do you explain power rule?

What is the Power rule? Basically, you take the power and multiply it by the expression, then you reduce the power by 1.

What is the rule of exponents?

The Power Rule for Exponents: (a^m)ⁿ = a^m*n. To raise a number with an exponent to a power, multiply the exponent times the power. Negative Exponent Rule: x^–n = 1/xⁿ. Invert the base to change a negative exponent into a positive.

What happens when you divide powers?

To divide exponents (or powers) with the same base, subtract the exponents. Division is the opposite of multiplication, so it makes sense that because you add exponents when multiplying numbers with the same base, you subtract the exponents when dividing numbers with the same base.

Why do you multiply when raising a power of a base to another power?

This leads to another rule for exponents—the Power Rule for Exponents. To simplify a power of a power, you multiply the exponents, keeping the base the same.

When raising an exponent to another exponent you can keep the base and?

When multiplying like bases, keep the base the same and add the exponents. When raising a base with a power to another power, keep the base the same and multiply the exponents. When dividing like bases, keep the base the same and subtract the denominator exponent from the numerator exponent.

What happens when you multiply exponents?

When you're multiplying exponents, use the first rule: add powers together when multiplying like bases. 52 × 56 = ? The bases of the equation stay the same, and the values of the exponents get added together. ... Adding the exponents together is just a shortcut to the answer.

What does raise to the power of one mean?

Raising Numbers to the Power of One

If you raise any number to the power of 1, the result will be that number! ... For instance, we can raise a variable to the first power.

How do powers work?

Exponents, also known as powers, are values that show how many times to multiply a base number by itself. For example, 4³ is telling you to multiply four by itself three times. 4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64The number being raised by a power is known as the base, while the superscript number above it is the exponent or power.

What are the 8 rules of exponents?

• Multiplying Powers with same Base.
• Dividing Powers with the same Base.
• Power of a Power.
• Multiplying Powers with the same Exponents.
• Negative Exponents.
• Power with Exponent Zero.
• Fractional Exponent.
