Intravenous urography (also known as intravenous pyelography) is an X-ray procedure which is used to assess problems in your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. These structures make up your urinary tract.

Why is intravenous urography performed?

An intravenous pyelogram is used to examine your kidneys, ureters and bladder. It lets your doctor see the size and shape of these structures and determine if they're working properly.

What is IVP used for?

Intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is an x-ray exam that uses an injection of contrast material to evaluate your kidneys, ureters and bladder and help diagnose blood in the urine or pain in your side or lower back.

What are the contraindications of intravenous urography?

Contraindications to compression include the following: Evidence of obstruction on the 5-minute image. Abdominal aortic aneurysm or other abdominal mass. Severe abdominal pain.

Why IVU test is done?

An IVU can show if cancer is growing in any part of your urinary system. The cancer will show up as a blockage or an irregular outline on the wall of the bladder or ureter.

What is the difference between intravenous urography and intravenous pyelography?

Intravenous urography (IVU), also referred to as intravenous pyelography (IVP) or excretory urography (EU), is a radiographic study of the renal parenchyma, pelvicalyceal system, ureters and the urinary bladder. This exam has been largely replaced by CT urography.

At what minutes are pictures taken when performing intravenous urography?

A series of X-ray pictures is then taken over your tummy (abdomen), usually every 5-10 minutes. You stay on the couch between each X-ray picture; however, you may be asked to get up to empty your bladder before the final X-ray picture is taken. The procedure usually takes about 30-60 minutes.

What contrast media is typically used in excretory urography?

When intravenous gadolinium-based contrast material is administered to patients for excretory MR urography, some form of dynamic, multiphase T1-weighted sequence is typically performed of the kidneys.

How urography is performed?

A CT urogram uses X-rays to generate multiple images of a slice of the area in your body being studied, including bones, soft tissues and blood vessels. These images are then sent to a computer and quickly reconstructed into detailed 2D images.

What is CT intravenous pyelogram?

CT Intravenous pyelography (IVP) is a diagnostic multiphase CT study of the urinary tract system which is used to clarify diagnoses when a CT Kidney, ureters and bladder (KUB) scan is unable to depict abnormalities clearly.

What is the difference between KUB and IVP?

Unlike a kidneys, ureters, and bladder x-ray (KUB), which is a plain (that is, noncontrast) radiograph, an IVP uses contrast to highlight the urinary tract.

What is IBP test?

Intravenous Pyelogram Purpose

This test lets your doctor see the size and shape of your bladder, kidneys, and ureters, and how well they're working. They can spot blockages in your urinary tract caused by: Kidney stones. Enlarged prostate. Tumors in the kidney, ureters, or bladder.

What does KUB Xray show?

A kidney, ureter, and bladder (KUB) study is an X-ray study that allows your doctor to assess the organs of your urinary and gastrointestinal systems. Doctors can use it to help them diagnose urinary disorders and causes of abdominal pain.

What is the meaning of urography?

Urography is an examination used to evaluate the kidneys, ureters and bladder. Excretory urography, also known as intravenous pyelogram, is performed using conventional x-ray after the intravenous administration of radiographic contrast material.

Which of the following are common symptoms of cystitis?

• A strong, persistent urge to urinate.
• A burning sensation when urinating.
• Passing frequent, small amounts of urine.
• Blood in the urine (hematuria)
• Passing cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
• Pelvic discomfort.
• A feeling of pressure in the lower abdomen.
• Low-grade fever.

Why do they put dye in kidneys?

This is very useful for diagnosis, since the blockages in blood vessels can be hard to see without the dye. Doctors also use contrast dye during other blood vessel procedures so they can see the blood vessels they are treating. But, sometimes the dye can cause serious problems in the kidneys.

Can you pee after drinking contrast?

You will likely have a warm, flushed sensation during the injection of the contrast materials and a metallic taste in your mouth that lasts for at most a minute or two. You may experience the feeling that you have to urinate; however, this is actually the contrast effect and subsides quickly.

Does CT urogram use contrast?

A CT urogram is a test using a CT scan and special dye (contrast medium) to look at the urinary system. The contrast medium helps show up the urinary system more clearly.

What can we visualize in an intravenous urography?

The appearance of the calices and renal pelvis should be examined closely because intravenous urography is the most accurate imaging modality for visualizing the urothelium-lined surfaces and evaluating potential abnormalities (transitional cell carcinoma, mucosal striations, pyelitis cystica).

What is the difference between CT KUB and CT Urogram?

Patients presenting to emergency departments with acute ureteric colic are investigated with a CT KUB. CT urography (CTU) identifies UTUC better than a CT KUB. Thus, there is a possibility that a CT KUB may miss UTUC.

What occurs when the muscles in the wall of the bladder contract involuntarily?

Urinary bladder spasms occur when the bladder contracts involuntarily, which can cause a person to urinate. These spasms can be painful, and they may be embarrassing if they lead to an extreme urge to urinate or leakage of urine.

What is hydronephrosis of kidney?

Hydronephrosis is a condition where one or both kidneys become stretched and swollen as the result of a build-up of urine inside them. It can affect people of any age and is sometimes spotted in unborn babies during routine pregnancy ultrasound scans.

Can I drink water before IVP?

Before Your Procedure

Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the IVP. You may continue to take your medications with a sip of water.

What causes horseshoe kidney?

Horseshoe kidney when the 2 kidneys join (fuse) together at the bottom to form a U shape like a horseshoe. It is also known as renal fusion. The condition occurs when a baby is growing in the womb, as the baby's kidneys move into place. Horseshoe kidney can occur alone or with other disorders.

What is excretion urography?

Excretory urography is a type of contrast study used to verify and localize upper urinary tract disease. In some instances, information regarding renal function and disease pathophysiology can also be obtained.
