Indirect bilirubin may be too high when the liver is unable to adequately process (conjugated) bilirubin or when there is abnormal destruction of red blood cells (hemolysis). Meanwhile, direct bilirubin may be too high if the liver is unable to pass on the bilirubin after it has been conjugated.

What causes elevated indirect bilirubin?

Common causes of higher indirect bilirubin include: Hemolytic anemia. This means your body is getting rid of too many red blood cells. Bleeding into the skin caused by injury.

What is a high indirect bilirubin level?

It forms after red blood cells break down, and it travels through your liver, gallbladder, and digestive tract before being excreted. Typically, bilirubin levels fall somewhere between 0.3 and 1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Anything above 1.2 mg/dL is usually considered high.

When is unconjugated bilirubin high?

The peak total serum bilirubin level in physiologic jaundice typically is 5-6 mg/dL (86-103 µmol/L), occurs 48-120 hours after birth, and does not exceed 17-18 mg/dL (291-308 µmol/L). Higher levels of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia are pathologic and occur in various conditions.

Is 0.5 direct bilirubin high?

When liver cells are damaged from hepatitis, the liver may release both indirect and direct bilirubin into the bloodstream. This causes higher levels. Gallstones. The bile duct is a tube that carries bile to the small intestine.

What is normal range of indirect bilirubin?

Normal findings

Indirect bilirubin: 0.2-0.8 mg/dL or 3.4-12.0 μmol/L (SI units) Direct bilirubin: 0.1-0.3 mg/dL or 1.7-5.1 μmol/L (SI units)

How do you reduce indirect bilirubin?

1. Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated helps lower bilirubin levels by facilitating the removal of waste from the body. ...
2. Consume fresh fruits and vegetables. ...
3. Increase your intake of fiber. ...
4. Avoid alcohol.

What happens to indirect bilirubin?

Indirect bilirubin is formed by the breakdown of hemoglobin in the red blood cells. The liver converts this bilirubin into direct bilirubin, which can then be released into the intestine by the gallbladder for elimination.

What happens if indirect bilirubin is low?

A 2018 study suggests that low bilirubin levels could increase your risk of developing deep white matter lesions in your brain, even if you don't have any other health issues. These lesions are linked to several conditions, including dementia and heart disease.

How is high indirect bilirubin treated?

No treatment is needed for physiologic jaundice. For breast milk jaundice and other types of nonphysiologic jaundice, phototherapy can be used. Phototherapy, which consists of exposing the infant's skin to light, is a safe and efficient method to reduce the toxicity of bilirubin and to increase its elimination.

What happens if bilirubin indirect is high?

Elevated levels may indicate liver damage or disease. Higher than normal levels of direct bilirubin in your blood may indicate your liver isn't clearing bilirubin properly. Elevated levels of indirect bilirubin may indicate other problems.

What is indirect bilirubin level?

The indirect bilirubin level in the bloodstream is the total bilirubin minus the direct bilirubin levels in the bloodstream. Additionally, normal reference ranges may vary from lab to lab. In a newborn, higher bilirubin is normal due to the stress of birth.

What happens if bilirubin Direct is high?

Share on Pinterest High bilirubin can lead to jaundice. A high level of bilirubin in the blood is known as hyperbilirubinemia. High bilirubin levels can cause jaundice. Jaundice makes the skin and the whites of the eyes appear yellow, due to the brown and yellow bilirubin in the blood.

What is mildly elevated bilirubin?

If total bilirubin is mildly elevated (usually <6 mg/dL) and less than 20% is conjugated (direct: total ratio <0.2), the most likely diagnoses are Gilbert syndrome or hemolysis. Gilbert syndrome affects ~5% of the population and causes mild hyperbilirubinemia because of impaired UDP-glucuronyltransferase.

When should I worry about Alt?

When ALT levels are very high, it may be a sign of an acute liver problem. Mild or moderate elevation, especially if it persists on several tests over time, can be an indicator of a chronic disease. However, the degree of elevation alone is not a reliable predictor of the extent of injury to the liver.

Which type of bilirubin causes jaundice?

Any bilirubin that manages to become conjugated will be excreted normally, yet it is the unconjugated bilirubin that remains in the blood stream to cause the jaundice. In hepatocellular (or intrahepatic) jaundice, there is dysfunction of the hepatic cells.

Can bilirubin fluctuate?

Bilirubin levels can, however, fluctuate in GS and it is possible that they can be within the normal range over a period of time.

Can dehydration cause high bilirubin?

Bilirubin levels may increase with stress, strain, dehydration, fasting, infection or exposure to cold. In many individuals, jaundice is only evident when one of these triggers raises the bilirubin levels.

What does high ALT mean?

High levels of ALT may indicate liver damage from hepatitis, infection, cirrhosis, liver cancer, or other liver diseases. Other factors, including medicines, can affect your results. Be sure to tell your health care provider about all the prescription and over-the counter medicines you are taking.

What causes elevated conjugated bilirubin?

The conjugated (direct) bilirubin level is often elevated by alcohol, infectious hepatitis, drug reactions, and autoimmune disorders. Posthepatic disorders also can cause conjugated hyperbilirubinemia.

Can fatty liver cause increased bilirubin?

Elevated serum bilirubin levels are inversely associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Which bilirubin is elevated in hemolysis?

In hemolysis, the concentration of unconjugated bilirubin (indirect bilirubin) is increased, while in liver disease the level of conjugated bilirubin (direct bilirubin) is increased.

Can exercise lower bilirubin levels?

There is evidence that lower body fat (8) and reductions in weight (3) are associated with elevated bilirubin levels. Since aerobic exercise training has beneficial effects on body composition, it is plausible that aerobic exercise training can increase total bilirubin levels.

How long does it take for bilirubin levels to return to normal?

Bilirubin levels slowly improve over 3–12 weeks. has a different blood type from the mother. If mother and baby have different blood types, the mother's body makes antibodies that attack the baby's red blood cells.

Is indirect bilirubin elevated in Gilbert's syndrome?

Jaundice. Unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Gilbert syndrome is a benign condition characterized by sporadic episodes of asymptomatic jaundice due to a mild indirect hyperbilirubinemia caused by a deficiency in bilirubin glucoronidation. This condition has been documented in 4 to 16% of general population (1-6).
