Bone resorption is resorption of bone tissue, that is, the process by which osteoclasts break down the tissue in bones and release the minerals, resulting in a transfer of calcium from bone tissue to the blood. The osteoclasts are multi-nucleated cells that contain numerous mitochondria and lysosomes.

What does mineralization of bone mean?

This process occurs in a life span of biological organism for the formation of bone, teeth, exoskeletons, egg shells, etc. So, basically bone mineralisation is defined as the process of deposition of minerals on the bone matrix for the development of bone.

Why is bone resorbed?

The process of resorption (remodeling) involves the removal of hard bone tissue by osteoclasts followed by the laying down of new bone cells by osteoblasts. Resorption releases calcium and repairs micro-damage to bones from normal wears and tears.

How does bone resorption happen?

The typical process involves breaking down damaged or weakened bone tissue through osteoclasts — cells that break down bone — once the bone is removed, we begin building new bone. When it has to do with one in our mouths, resorption pertains more to the changes at the root of the tooth.

What causes increased bone resorption?

Clinical disorders in which bone resorption is increased are very common and include Paget's disease of bone, osteoporosis, and the bone changes secondary to cancer, such as occur in myeloma and metastases from breast cancer.

Bone remodeling and repair

When does bone resorption begin?

After age 30, bone resorption slowly begins to exceed new bone formation. This leads to bone loss. Bone loss in women occurs fastest in the first few years after menopause, but bone loss continues into old age.

What stimulates bone resorption?

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) stimulates bone resorption by acting directly on osteoblasts/stromal cells and then indirectly to increase differentiation and function of osteoclasts.

How often does bone resorption occur?

In fact, according to Duke Orthopedics, when you were in your first year of life, almost 100% of your skeleton was replaced, and as an adult, your bones remodel themselves at a rate of about 10% per year.

What happens when bone resorption is greater than bone deposition?

Cortical drift occurs when formation is decreased and resorption increased on the endosteal surface, while bone is deposited on the periosteal surface. This leads to an increase in bone diameter and, in the case where endosteal resorption is greater than formation, cortical thinning.

What is a resorption?

Resorption is the term for a common type of dental injury or irritation that causes a loss of a part or parts of a tooth. Resorption can affect many parts of a tooth, including: interior pulp. cementum, which covers the root. dentin, which is the second-hardest tissue underneath enamel.

What stimulates osteoclast activity?

Osteoclastic activity is stimulated by cytokines such as IL-6 and RANK and inhibited by calcitonin.

Where are the osteocytes?

OSTEOCYTES are cells inside the bone. They also come from osteoblasts. Some of the osteoblasts turn into osteocytes while the new bone is being formed, and the osteocytes then get surrounded by new bone.

What is the difference between osteoclast and osteoblast?

In simple words, an osteoblast builds the bone, whereas an osteoclast eats up the bone so that it can be reshaped into a stronger and resilient load-bearing structure. Other differences are mentioned below. Osteoblasts or lining cells: Osteoblasts are considered the main type of bone cells.

How do you determine bone mineralization?

Assessment of bone mineralization can be performed noninvasively by densitometry with the use of single- or dual-photon absorptiometry techniques. The standard values for bone mineral content in premature and in full-term infants have been developed by several investigators.

What occurs during the process of mineralization?

Mineralization is the process by which chemicals present in organic matter are decomposed or oxidized into easily available forms to plants. ... Mixing organic matter, mineral particles, and microorganisms creates new contact surfaces for the bacteria and enhances the mineralization process [54,57,111].

Is bone mineralization bad?

As a consequence, the quality of bone tissue can be compromised. Such pathological bone mineralization can be the main cause of many bone diseases. Osteomalacia is a metabolic bone disease caused by lack of bone mineral or overactive bone resorption in adults.

What occurs when the rate of bone resorption exceeds the rate of bone formation?

As people age, the rate of bone resorption far exceeds the rate of bone formation. Thus, bones can weaken, leading to conditions like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can be prevented with lifestyle changes such as proper nutrition and exercise. The risks of osteoporosis can also be reduced through the prevention of falls.

Does bone formation exceeds bone resorption in osteoporosis?

About Osteoporosis

During the growth years, childhood and the teenage years, bone formation exceeds bone resorption. As a result, your bones become longer, larger, heavier and denser.

What hormone influences both resorption and deposition of bone?

Three calcium-regulating hormones play an important role in producing healthy bone: 1) parathyroid hormone or PTH, which maintains the level of calcium and stimulates both resorption and formation of bone; 2) calcitriol, the hormone derived from vitamin D, which stimulates the intestines to absorb enough calcium and ...

How long is bone resorption?

3 - 6 months.

How long does bone resorption take?

The healing process takes approximately 12 to 16 weeks. According to Schropp et al., about two-thirds of the affected hard and soft tissues undergo some degree of resorption change during the first three months after the extraction [3].

Does bone resorption cause pain?

If bone resorption in the jaw occurs for a long period of time, patients may experience pain while chewing, eating, and talking due to an ever-shrinking jaw bone.

Does vitamin D increase bone resorption?

Previous studies have shown that high doses of vitamin D did result in increased resorption of bone unless calcium was also supplemented. The active form of vitamin D called calcitriol increases the production of osteoclasts which enhance bone resorption.

How do you prevent bone resorption?

Bisphosphonates inhibit bone resorption by binding to hydroxyapatite and reducing osteoclast number and activity. When alendronate is added to HT in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis there is a significant increase in bone density at both the spine and hip trochanter and the combination is well tolerated.

What is the life cycle of a bone?

Bone metabolism is a continual cycle of bone growth and resorption that is carefully orchestrated by the dynamic relationship between osteoclasts, osteoblasts and an array of hormonal and regulatory influences.
