When two continental plates diverge, a valleylike rift develops. This rift is a dropped zone where the plates are pulling apart. As the crust widens and thins, valleys form in and around the area, as do volcanoes, which may become increasingly active.

What happens when a tectonic plate diverges?

A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. ... Magma rises into and through the other plate, solidifying into granite, the rock that makes up the continents. Thus, at convergent boundaries, continental crust is created and oceanic crust is destroyed.

What happens when continental plates divide?

What happens when two continental plates collide? ... Instead, a collision between two continental plates crunches and folds the rock at the boundary, lifting it up and leading to the formation of mountains and mountain ranges.

What is it called when continental plates have a divergent boundary?

In plate tectonics, a divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary (also known as a constructive boundary or an extensional boundary) is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.

What are the effects found in divergent boundary between continental plate?

Effects that are found at this type of plate boundary include: a rift valley sometimes occupied by long linear lakes or a shallow arm of the ocean; numerous normal faults bounding a central rift valley; shallow earthquake activity along the normal faults. Volcanic activity sometimes occurs within the rift.

Convergent boundaries

What happens in continental continental divergence?

When plate divergence occurs on land, the continental crust rifts, or splits. This effectively creates a new ocean basin as the pieces of the continent move apart. In continental rifting, magma rises beneath the continent, causing it to become thinner, break, and ultimately split apart.

What happens in continental continental convergence?

When two continental plates converge, they smash together and create mountains. The amazing Himalaya Mountains are the result of this type of convergent plate boundary.

What is the motion of divergent boundary?

At divergent boundaries, plates move away from each other. At convergent boundaries, plates move towards each other. At transform boundaries, plates move alongside each other.

Why is a divergent boundary also called a constructive boundary?

At a divergent plate boundary - also known as a constructive plate boundary, the plates move apart from one another. When this happens the magma from the mantle rises up to make (or construct) new crust. The movement of the plates over the mantle can cause earthquakes. Rising magma can also create shield volcanoes .

What is the meaning of divergent plate?

[ dĭ-vûr′jənt ] A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and new crust is forming from magma that rises to the Earth's surface between the two plates.

What will happen if two continental plates converge to each other?

When two continental crusted plates converge, they eventually collide and end up producing mountains; this was how the Himalayan Mountains were created. Neither continental crust will subduct underneath one another because of their similar densities. ... Old, dense crust tends to be subducted back into the earth.

What happens when two continental plates meet at a convergent boundary According to plate tectonics?

What happens when two continental plates meet at a convergent boundary according to plate tectonics? They push against each other to form deep-ocean trenches. They push against each other to form folded mountain ranges. ... As two continental plates collide along a convergent boundary, mountains are formed.

What events occur during the convergent of continental plates and oceanic plates?

When a continental plate meets an oceanic plate, the thinner, denser, and more flexible oceanic plate sinks beneath the thicker, more rigid continental plate. This is called subduction. Subduction causes deep ocean trenches to form, such as the one along the west coast of South America.

What happens when an oceanic and continental plate diverge?

When two oceanic plates diverge, underwater ridges and mountain ranges form, such as the mid-Atlantic Ridge. ... Eventually these mountain ranges can rise above the water to form islands. When two continental plates diverge, great rift valleys can form.

What happens when oceanic and continental crusts interact?

When oceanic crust converges with continental crust, the denser oceanic plate plunges beneath the continental plate. This process, called subduction, occurs at the oceanic trenches (figure 6). The entire region is known as a subduction zone. Subduction zones have a lot of intense earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Is the continental drift?

Continental drift describes one of the earliest ways geologists thought continents moved over time. ... In the early 20th century, Wegener published a paper explaining his theory that the continental landmasses were “drifting” across the Earth, sometimes plowing through oceans and into each other.

Why transform is called conservative?

Transform boundaries are also known as conservative plate boundaries because they involve no addition or loss of lithosphere at the Earth's surface.

What does divergent plate boundaries cause?

When two plates are moving away from each other, we call this a divergent plate boundary. Along these boundaries, magma rises from deep within the Earth and erupts to form new crust on the lithosphere. ... As the plates rub against each other, huge stresses can cause portions of the rock to break, resulting in earthquakes.

What geographical structure is formed at a divergent boundary?

A divergent plate boundary often forms a mountain chain known as a ridge. This feature forms as magma escapes into the space between the spreading tectonic plates.

What is the relative motion of convergent oceanic continental plate boundary?

As with oceanic-continental convergence, when two oceanic plates converge, one is usually subducted under the other, and in the process a trench is formed. The Marianas Trench (paralleling the Mariana Islands), for example, marks where the fast-moving Pacific Plate converges against the slower moving Philippine Plate.

Are Mountains divergent convergent or transform?

Mountains are usually formed at what are called convergent plate boundaries, meaning a boundary at which two plates are moving towards one another. This type of boundary eventually results in a collision.

What is the motion of Transform?

A transform fault is a plate boundary along which the relative motion between the two plates is parallel to the strike of the fault and is geometrically the arc of a small circle about the pole of rotation between two plates.

What does a continental continental Convergence give rise to?

Continent-continent convergence creates some of the world's largest mountains ranges. Magma cannot penetrate this thick crust, so there are no volcanoes, although the magma stays in the crust. Metamorphic rocks are common because of the stress the continental crust experiences.

What is an example of continental continental convergence?

Examples of continent-continent convergent boundaries are the collision of the India Plate with the Eurasian Plate, creating the Himalaya Mountains, and the collision of the African Plate with the Eurasian Plate, creating the series of ranges extending from the Alps in Europe to the Zagros Mountains in Iran.

Which of the following surface features would you expect to find at a continental continental convergent plate boundary?

Effects found at a convergent boundary between continental plates include: intense folding and faulting; a broad folded mountain range; shallow earthquake activity; shortening and thickening of the plates within the collision zone.
