1 : stibnite. 2 : a trivalent and pentavalent metalloid element with atomic number 51 that commonly occurs in a brittle, metallic, silvery white crystalline form and that is used especially in alloys, semiconductors, and flame-retardant substances — see Chemical Elements Table.

What is the example of antimony?

Examples of these chemical compounds, used in the manufacturing of these materials, include antimony pentoxide (Sb2O5) and antimony trioxide (Sb2O3). Lesser known uses of antimony include the manufacturing of glass, ceramics, and plastics.

What is antimony used for?

Main uses of antimony

Antimony is used to increase the hardness of alloys, with lead alloys for batteries, with lead/copper/tin alloys for machine bearings. It is also used in automotive clutch and brake parts. The other major use is as antimony trioxide which is used for the production of flame retardant chemicals.

How do you use antimony in a sentence?

The crystals look like antimony , and are brittle, and so hard as to scratch glass and rubies; their specific gravity is 4.25. Copper and antimony are found in the neighbourhood. There are many other valuable ores - copper, iron, lead, zinc, antimony , chrome and manganese. Antimony deposits were first worked in 1906.

What is ANTIMONY? What does ANTIMONY mean? ANTIMONY meaning, definition & explanation

Where can you get antimony?

Antimony is sometimes found in pure form. It is also obtained from the mineral stibnite (antimony sulfide) and commonly is a by-product of lead-zinc-silver mining. Other antimony-bearing minerals include sibiconite, tetrahedrite and ullmannite. It is mined in China, Bolivia, South Africa and Mexico.

Where does the word antimony come from?

The name derives from the Greek, anti + monos for "not alone" or "not one" because it was found in many compounds. The symbol Sb comes from stibium, which is derived from the Greek stibi for "mark" because it was used for blackening eyebrows and eyelashes.

Why is antimony so explosive?

Electrolytic deposition of antimony under certain conditions produces an unstable, amorphous form called “explosive antimony,” because, when bent or scratched, it will change in a mildly explosive manner to the more stable, metallic form.

What family is antimony?

antimony (Sb), a metallic element belonging to the nitrogen group (Group 15 [Va] of the periodic table).

What is unique about antimony?

Antimony (Sb) has an atomic number of fifty-one, with fifty-one protons in the nucleus. It is a highly brittle, bluish-white, semi-metallic element. Interesting Antimony Facts: ... Its name is attributed to the French word for "monk killer," since toxic antimony is linked to alchemy, which was often studied by monks.

Does the human body use antimony?

In addition antimony trioxide is possibly carcinogenic to humans. Improvements in working conditions have remarkably decreased the incidence of antimony toxicity in the workplace. As a therapeutic, antimony has been mostly used for the treatment of leishmaniasis and schistosomiasis.

How do you identify antimony?

Antimony is an element with atomic symbol Sb, atomic number 51, and atomic weight 121.76. Antimony powder appears as a silvery or gray solid in the form of dust. Denser than water and insoluble in water.

How is antimony formed?

Some antimony is produced as a by-product of smelting ores of other metals, mainly gold, copper and silver, in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia. Important amounts of antimony are yielded as a by-product of copper and silver mining. Numerous stibnite deposits occur in Idaho, Montana and Nevada.

What is the most explosive thing in the world?

Azidoazide azide is the most explosive chemical compound ever created. It is part of a class of chemicals known as high-nitrogen energetic materials, and it gets its "bang" from the 14 nitrogen atoms that compose it in a loosely bound state. This material is both highly reactive and highly explosive.

Which is the rarest element on the Earth?

A team of researchers using the ISOLDE nuclear-physics facility at CERN has measured for the first time the so-called electron affinity of the chemical element astatine, the rarest naturally occurring element on Earth.

Who named antimony?

The standard chemical symbol for antimony (Sb) is credited to Jöns Jakob Berzelius, who derived the abbreviation from stibium. The ancient words for antimony mostly have, as their chief meaning, kohl, the sulfide of antimony. and is used by Attic tragic poets of the 5th century BC.

What is lead antimony?

Antimony (Sb) is an element that is blended in with metals such as lead to create different alloys. In lead-based alloys, antimony is added in the range of 1/2 percent to 12 percent and most commonly it is used in a range of 1/2 percent to 6 percent antimony and the balance of the alloy is lead or tin.

What is the history of antimony?

Word origin: Antimony was named after the Greek words anti and monos to mean “a metal not found alone.” The chemical symbol, Sb, comes from the element's historical name, stibium. Discovery: Antimony was a known metal in the 17th century and was likely used even earlier.

What products contain antimony?

Antimony alloys are also used in batteries, low friction metals, type metal and cable sheathing, among other products. Antimony compounds are used to make flame-proofing materials, paints, ceramic enamels, glass and pottery. The ancient Egyptians used antimony, in the form of stibnite, for black eye make-up.

Can you poison someone with antimony?

antimony poisoning, harmful effects upon body tissues and functions of ingesting or inhaling certain compounds of antimony. Such poisoning resembles arsenic poisoning.

How is antimony bad?

Chronic exposure to antimony in the air at levels of 9 mg/m³ may exacerbate irritation of the eyes, skin, and lungs. Long-term inhalation of antimony can potentiate pneumoconiosis, altered electrocardiograms, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach ulcers, results which were confirmed in laboratory animals.
